  • The purpose of this study was to investigate correlations among objective measurements of spasticity in patients with brain lesions. Thirty-two stroke and traumatic brain injury subjects participated in the study. Spasticity was quantified using the knee first flexion angle, relaxation index obtained from a pendulum drop test, and the amplitude of a knee tendon reflex test. Pearson's product correlation coefficient was used to examine relationships among these measurements of spasticity. There was a significant positive correlation between the relaxation index and knee first flexion angle in patients with brain lesions (r=.895, p<.01). There was also significant negative correlation between the amplitude of knee tendon reflex and relaxation index (r=-.612, p<.01), and between amplitude and knee first flexion angle (r=-.537, p<.01). Thus, it is possible to use the knee first flexion angle as an objective measure of spasticity, rather than relaxation index, which is more complicated to obtain. Further studies are needed to explore the effects of functional improvement and long-lasting carryover effects of spasticity using a simple objective measure such as the knee first flexion angle from a pendulum test.

  • The objective of this study was to clarify the relations among mothers' self-esteem and facilitative communication, to children's self-esteem, and facilitative communication and then to inquire into how these relationships relatively contribute to children's self-esteem. Subjects were 206 elementary school children and their mothers in Anjang. Two types of instruments were used in this study. To measure the children's and mothers' self-esteem, SEI(Self-Esteem Inventory) was to used. To measure mothers' facilitative communication levels, "Mothers' Facilitative Communication Scales" was constructed by the researcher. The statistical procedures used for collected data analyses were correlation, one-way ANOVA, multiful regression. The findings are as following: 1. A significant static correlation was found between mothers' self-esteem and children's self-esteem. 2. Also, a significant static correlation was revealed between mothers' facilitative communication level and children's self-esteem. 3. The level of mothers' facilitative communication discloses a significant difference depending upon the mothers' self-esteem. 4. Mothers' level of facilitative communication affected children's self-esteem rather than the mothers' self-esteem.

  • For high-temperature superconducting power applications that need large current capacity, a large current conductor manufactured using multiple superconducting tape is required. Conductors being studied for large currents capacity such as CORC, TSTC, and RACC have advantages and disadvantages, and in order to use these conductors in coil form and apply them to AC power devices, research on magnetization loss occurring in superconductors due to external magnetic fields is essential. To accurately measure magnetization loss in a conductor that is twisted by stacking straight conductors like TSTC, the correlation between the measuring system and the shape of the sample must be clearly known to accurately measure the loss. In this paper, we will confirm the difference in magnetization loss measurement values according to the correlation between the length of the pickup coil and the twist pitch of the sample in CORC and TSTC shapes, and review considerations for accurate magnetization loss measurement from the results.

  • Present study was performed to compare different types of teleoperation performance measures. A modified Cooper-Harper rating scale and a distance measure were newly introduced and compared to two traditional measures, the error rate and time-to-completion. Participants performed a simulated telerobotic task with varying visual display interfaces. The results of correlation analyses revealed that the modified Cooper-Harper ratings had a close association with the error rate measure. The distance measure also appeared to be a consistent performance measure, which accounted for both the error rate and time-to-completion. A further analysis, however, showed that the effectiveness of each performance measure varied with the level of task difficulty. The results imply that the choice of performance measure should be made based on the task difficulty as well as the particular task being studied. The results revealed here also have implication for performance measures of various display and control systems including aircraft navigation displays and tactical displays.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between masticatory muscle thickness and mandibular morphology in young Korean adults with normal occlusion and mandibular prognathism. Patients and Methods: Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) was used to measure the masticatory muscle thickness on the right side in 100 Korean young adults (50 normal occlusion group, 50 mandibular prognathism group). Cephalometric analysis was done to measure mandibular morphology. Pearson correlation analysis was done to investigate the relationship between the masticatory muscle thickness and mandibular morphometry. Results: The four masticatory muscles showed positive correlation with intergonial width in all subjects. All muscles, except temporalis, positively correlated with height of the ramus and mandibular length. Positive correlation was also observed in all muscles, except medial pterygoid, with thickness of the ramus. In the normal occlusion group, all four masticatory muscles showed positive correlation with intergonial width and ramus thickness. Positive correlation was also observed in all muscles (except lateral pterygoid) with mandibular length. Masseter and lateral pterygoid positively correlated with height of the ramus. In the mandibular prognathism group, all masticatory muscles, except lateral pterygoid, showed positive correlation with intergonial width. The masseter muscle showed negative correlation with ANB. Conclusion: The results suggest a positive correlation of the thickness of masticatory muscles with both horizontal and vertical dimensions of the mandible. However, thickness of the masseter was found to decrease in patients with increasing severity of mandibular prognathism.

  • In this paper, we develop the Bayesian model selection procedure using the reference prior for comparing two nested model such as the independent and intraclass models using the distance or divergence between the two as the basis of comparison. A suitable criterion for this is the power divergence measure as introduced by Cressie and Read(1984). Such a measure includes the Kullback -Liebler divergence measures and the Hellinger divergence measure as special cases. For this problem, the power divergence measure turns out to be a function solely of $\rho$, the intraclass correlation coefficient. Also, this function is convex, and the minimum is attained at $\rho=0$. We use reference prior for $\rho$. Due to the duality between hypothesis tests and set estimation, the hypothesis testing problem can also be solved by solving a corresponding set estimation problem. The present paper develops Bayesian method based on the Kullback-Liebler and Hellinger divergence measures, rejecting $H_0:\rho=0$ when the specified divergence measure exceeds some number d. This number d is so chosen that the resulting credible interval for the divergence measure has specified coverage probability $1-{\alpha}$. The length of such an interval is compared with the equal two-tailed credible interval and the HPD credible interval for $\rho$ with the same coverage probability which can also be inverted into acceptance regions of $H_0:\rho=0$. Example is considered where the HPD interval based on the one-at- a-time reference prior turns out to be the shortest credible interval having the same coverage probability.

  • For the set up, management and repair of a mobile communication system, continuous estimation of speech quality is required. Speech quality measurement can be conducted by listener's judgement in a subjective test such as MOS (Mean Opinion Score) test. However, this method is laborious, expensive and time-consuming, it is advisable to predict subjective speech quality via objective measures. This paper presents a robust objective speech quality measure, PLP-CMS (Perceptual Linear Predictive-Cepstral Mean Subtraction), which can predict subjective speech quality in mobile communication systems. PLP-CMS has a high correlation with subjective quality owing to PLP (Perceptual Linear Predictive) analysis and shows a robust performance not being influenced by PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) channel effects due to CMS (Cepstral Mean Subtraction). To prove the performance of our proposed algorithm, we carried out subjective and objective quality estimation on speech samples which are variously distorted in a real mobile communication system. As a result, we demonstrated that PLP-CMS has a higher correlation with subjective quality than PSQM (Perceptual Speech Quality Measure) and PLP-CD (Perceptual Linear Predictive-Cepstral Distance).

  • This paper presents our study on speech recognition performance prediction. Our initial study shows that a combination of speech quality measures effectively improves correlation with Word Error Rate (WER) compared to each speech measure alone. In this paper we demonstrate a new combination of various types of speech quality measures shows more significantly improves correlation with WER compared to the speech measure combination of our initial study. In our study, SNR, PESQ, acoustic model score, and MFCC distance are used as the speech quality measures. This paper also presents our speech database verification system for speech recognition employing the speech measures. We develop a WER prediction system using Gaussian mixture model and the speech quality measures as a feature vector. The experimental results show the proposed system is highly effective at predicting WER in a low SNR condition of speech babble and car noise environments.
