  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare level of functional independence and its correlates among community-dwelling older adults in rural areas between South Korea and the United Sates. Methods: The study employed a comparative and correlational design. Data were collected from 198 community-dwelling older adults in rural areas (South Korea=100, & US = 98). Functional independence, cognitive function, obesity and general characteristics were measured. Results: From both countries, approximately fifteen percent of older adults living independently had cognitive problems without any treatments. Among Korean older adults functional independence was associated with a number of chronic diseases and aging while in the United States the participants had a negative correlation with obesity and aging. Conclusion: For Korean older adults in rural areas, nurses should focus on monitoring older adults' abilities to manage chronic illness and designing self-management programs while in the United States the focus should be on healthy lifestyle programs about exercise and diet to increase functional independence.

  • State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People's Republic of China lead Research on Chao medicine's Constitutional Treatment project by which could involve the following principles. First, constitution can be identified, second, constitution correlates to ones susceptibility to diseases, third, constitution can be harmonized, fourth, prescription made according to ones constitution and patterns. These ideas is originated by Lee Je-ma's theory of Four Constitution Type in "DongEuiSooSeBoWon"(Longetivity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine). This is much similar to currents trends of personalized medicine in western medical sciences. Therefore further developing Lee's theory would have significant value on various fields of medicine.

  • The feature tenseness has long been a controversial issue. Many scholars have hardly accepted tenseness as a distinctive feature, due to the absence of its consistent and objective phonetic evidence especially in English. Instead, they claim that voicing is the primary feature and even say that no other feature can-be independent of voicing. However, voicing feature does not explain everything and significant aerodynamic and physiological correlates of the feature tenseness have been reported in English as well as in some other languages that have the tense/lax distinction in their obstruents. It is suggested that voicing is a simple and direct feature while tenseness is a complex and indirect feature and its autonomy as a distinctive feature should be acknowledged. This will enable us to describe the phonetic reality more properly across languages as well as in individual languages.

  • The SSEP(SomatoSensory Evoke Potentials) test is a valid and repeatable technique which correlates with clinically assessed joint position & vibration sense, skin touch & pressure sense. Also SSEP study is a simple and quantitative test, and has been used to evaluate the sensoty system along the somatosensory pathway from peripheral sensory receptor to the cortex. The ascending pathway of SSEP has been know to be posterior column-lemniscal pathway, but not without controversy. There are two kind of test mathods : one of test is median nerve SSEP and other test is posterior tibial nerve SSEP. Recently, SSEP used to performed to evaluate the usefulness of dermatomal SSEP(D-SSEP) and segmental SSEP(5-SSEP) for the diagnosis of lumbasacral radiculopathy, and it can be measure of ingual ahd palatine evoked potentials & indicator of medullary function useful for the diagnosis of brain death.

  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is an uncommon lesion that accounts for approximately 1% of primary malignant bronchial gland tumors and less than 0.2% of all lung neoplasm. This tumor presents with symptoms of bronchial irritation or obstruction. Distant metastasis is uncommon, therefore complete surgical resection is the treatment of choice. The prognosis of tumor correlates with on the histologic grade of tumor. We experienced mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a 15 year-old girl with symptoms of cough and blood tinged sputum. The patient underwent successful removal of tumor by bilobectomy via explorothoracotomy after chest CT and bronchoscopic biopsy.

  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lung is extremely rare. This rare tumor arise beyond the carina, usually main stem bronchi, but occasionally in lobar or segmental airways, This tumor presents with symptoms of bronchial irritation or obstruction. Distant metastasis is an uncommon, therefore complete surgical resection is the treatment of the choice. The prognosis of this tumor correlates with the histologic grade of the tumor. We experienced a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from the right middle lobe, which was treated with the right middle lobectomy, with good result. We report this case and follow-up of the patient.

  • Amino acids of histone tail are covalently modified in eukaryotic cells. Lysine residues in histone H3 and H4 are methylated at three levels; mono-, di- or trimethylation. Methylation in histones is related with transcription of the genes in distinct pattern depending on lysine residues and methylated levels. Relation between transcription and methylation has been relatively well understood at three lysines H3K4, H3K9 and H3K36. H3K4 is methylated in active or potentially active chromatin and its methylation associates with active transcription. H3K9 is generally methylated in heterochromatin or repressed gene, but trimethylation of this lysine occur in actively transcribed genes also. Methylation at H3K36 generally correlates with active chromatin/transcription, but the correlation of its dimethylation with transcription is controversial. All together methylation patterns of individual lysine residues in histone relate with activation or repression of transcription and may provide distinctive roles in transcriptional regulation of the eukaryotic genes.

  • Integrated condition monitoring is required to monitor effectively the machine conditions since machine failures could not be monitored accurately by any single measurement parameter. Application of various condition monitoring techniques is therefore preferred in many cases in order to diagnosis the machine condition. However it inevitably requires lots of maintenance cost and sometimes it could be proved to over-maintenance unnecessarily. This could happen especially when one measurement parameter closely correlates to another. Therefore correlation analysis of various monitoring parameters has to be performed to improve the reliability of diagnosis. In this work, Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between condition monitoring parameters of an over-loaded machine system where the vibration, wear and temperature were monitored simultaneously. The result showed that Pearson correlation coefficient could be regarded as a good measure for evaluating the availability of condition monitoring technology.

  • In cost-only incentive contract the emphasis is the attainment of efficient and effective cost control. In contrast multiple incentives contract correlates contractor's profit motives with the generalized government objective function, the decision variables of which are performance or quality (technical progress), time or schedule (timely development and delivery) and the cost (efficient and effective cost control) Under multiple incentive structure, it is essential to formulate the trade-off curves between cost and performance, which are called iso-fee curves. Trade-off curves depict the combination of cost and performance achievement for which the contractor will be rewarded with the same fee. The basic function of trade-off curves is to show he the contractor will be motivated by incentive arragement to trade off or sacrifice the achievement in one incentive element for the acnievment in another.
