  • The purpose of this study is to explore the revealing corporality in Mies' architecture. The character of such technical materials refuses or weakens the physical reality of the wall by the thoughts concerning the unlimited space or continuous space in Modern architecture. The wall or facade revealed visually is substituted to substance without materiality or just disappeared. This causes a problem of perception of architectural form itself in Modern architecture. Leonardo suggested that all kinds of human perception happens within the visibility and touchability. Likewise, the corporality as a visual reality can be perceived as an important and fundamental value, which can measure the real being. In this respect, This study reviews his architectural meaning by tracing the visual reality in his works. Namely, the emphasis of architectural elements through the relief effect, the expression of massiveness through the reflection of the glass wall and the emphasis of the color through the contrast are interpreted in the intention of Mies to emphasize the visual corporality of the building. This study is to reevaluate the meaning of Mies's architecture through understanding of his thought about the architectural corporality, which has been forgotten by the transparency concept of Modern architecture.

  • This paper aims to look into various symbolic meanings of the body shown in the film, Avatar (2009, James Cameron), and to ponder over a variety of media strategies carried by the pursuit of the corporality shown in this film. In a nutshell, the body in Avatar is a symbol of primitiveness rather than civilization, and the body language is a fundamental and effective means of communication much better than verbal language. A variety of physical contacts that appeared in many scenes of the movie emphasizes the role of the body as a means of real communication. Also, in the composition of the film dominated by the confrontation of civilization, numerous creatures in the planet Pandora with a variety of colors as well as a number of agencies and large body sizes express primitive richness. The narrative of the film telling the story of a 'moving' body ultimately emphasizes the superiority of the body with respect to consciousness, unlike the narrative of conventional movies dealing with the problems of the body. In addition, the corporality pursued by this film implies several important media strategies. It may reveal a self-reflection of the material civilization and the imperialism, or, on the contrary, an attempt to conceal or dilute them. It may also represent a self-reflection of the overdeveloped media technology, or simply the dilution of it. Finally, it may be an attempt to recover the feeling of "presence", not fully supported by the 3D technology, by the identification of the spectator's body and the character's body.

  • The films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Tsai Ming Liang expose one of the main features of modern Asian cinema: corporality. In their films, the various emotions of characters are expressed and exchanged through the body, not the language, so their film world is a world in which language has lost its function and symbolic order has collapsed. In Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Tsai Ming Liang movies, body language plays a more important role than general language. t=The body performs semiosis, pointing to wildness, anti-civilization, rite, alienation, illusion, etc. At the root of this variety of semiosis is the common denial of Western material civilization which has been rapidly transplanted in modern Asian countries. In addition, while the body of the two directors' films are seen as a sign of wildness, or anti-civilization that contains the intention of escaping from the oppressive and inhuman modern civilization, the body as a sign of illusion, and embraces the will of resistance to civilization. The illusion of experience in their films is ultimately a manifestation of the will to resist the physical and emotional pressures of reality and to continue the irrational persistence.
