Effect of cermet piece weight on growth and yield in Taro, Colocasia antiquorum var. esculenta Engl. (자우의 절편크기가 토란의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to investigate the possibility of utilizing cermet piece as a seed corm in taro, the cermet piece classified by the weight were planted on April 30, 2000. The effect of weight of cermets cutting by two pieces (5, 10, 15, and 20g) and four pieces (15g) on the growth, yield, and quality of taro was comparing with cormel follows as: The larger the size of cormel pieces was, the more number of leaves developed, and the higher the yield was. Also the growth of small cormel pieces was normal, so we forecast that it is possible to use small cermet pieces as seed cermet in mass production of taro.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of utilizing small cermet as a seed corm in taro, the small cermets classified by the weight were planted on April 30,2000. The effect of weight of small cermets(5,10, If,20,25, and 30g) and corms on the growth, yield, and quality of taro was compared to those raised from cermets. The larger the size of cormel was, the more number of leaves developed, and the higher the yield was. Also the growth of small cormel was normal, so we forecast that it is possible to use small cermet as seed corm in mass production of taro.

Foliar Application of Growth Bioregulators Influences Floral Traits, Cormassociated Traits and Chemical Constituents in Gladiolus grandiflorus L.

  • Gladiolus is one of the most popular cut flowers in the world floral market and is highly attractive to consumers. The production of poor-quality gladiolus spikes is one of the most important hurdles to obtaining high prices for this crop. The main objectives of this study were to improve the quantitative characteristics of gladiolus spikes, to increase propagule production and to enhance chemical constituent levels in leaves to help improve plant growth. We performed foliar application of bioregulators, including polyamines (putrescine and spermine) and vitamins (ascorbic acid and thiamine), at different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.4, 0.7 and 1 mM) to gladiolus plants at the three leaf, five leaf and slipping stages. Application of 1 mM putrescine was the most effective treatment, with prominent effects on economically important spike traits including spike length (55.53 cm), spike diameter (7.53 mm), florets per spike (13.99), first floret diameter (9.66 cm) and first floret weight (4.90 g), followed by spermine treatment. The 1 mM putrescine treatment also had positive effects on corm-associated traits including corm diameter and corm weight, with values of 4.57 cm and 26.16 g compared to 3.47 cm and 17.16 g in control plants, respectively. The contents of chemical constituents in leaves, including total chlorophylls ($8.06mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$), total carotenoids ($1.66mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$), total soluble sugars ($4.75 mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and phenolics ($0.89mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$) increased in response to foliar application of 1 mM putrescine compared to the control. Ascorbic acid and thiamine also had positive effects on various plant morphological traits and chemical constituents in leaves compared to control plants, but the growth-promoting effects of polyamines were more pronounced. Hence, applying polyamines to gladiolus leaves will help improve spike production and increasing propagule (cormel) yields.

Physioecological Characteristics and Phylogenetic Relationships Based on Multivariate Analysis on Colocasia antiquorum Schott (토란의 생리.생태적 특성 및 다변량 해석법을 통한 유연관계 분석)

  • Twenty-four major ecological and physiolosical characters of the 54 accessions of taro(Colocasia antiquorum) were observed in the growing seasons of 1995 and 1996 in $Ch{\breve{o}}nju$, Korea. The average days to emergence of the 54 accessions were 21.7 and the accession which had the shortest days to emergence was Kurye #2. Petiole color of most accessions was green, except $Ich{\breve{o}}n$ #1, Iri #1, Puan #1 and Taiwan #1 which had purple petioles. All the accessions had cormels except Taiwan #1 which had long runners without cormels. Average yield of the accessions was 3,719 kg/10a and total carmel weight, average carmel number, average carmel and average corm weight were 787g/plant, 39.2/plant, 20.3g/cormel, and 263.6g/plant, respectively. Accessions $Ch{\breve{o}}ngju$ #1 and Wanju #1 showed superiority in the three important characters, total carmel weight/plant, average carmel weight, and corm weight. Multivariate analysis for the 24 characters indicated that petiole color and carmel type had relatively higher coefficient of variation, 56.8 and 44.4 %, respectively. Fifty four taro accessions could be classified into 11 groups with D(${\sqrt{D^{2}}$) value of 110 on the basis of phenotypical characteristics. Most accessions were inclued in Group II. The Group I in which Taiwan #1 was included was genetically the most distant from the other groups. Accessions with purple petioles were grouped into the three different subgroups in which green petiole accessions were not included, indicating high dissimilarity between the different petiole color accessions. All the accessions grouped into the Group VIII, $Ch{\breve{o}}ngju$ #1, Wanju #1, Wanju #3, and $Taech{\breve{o}}n$ #2, had higher bioogical yield. Some accessions collected from the same district showed a high dissimilarity by being classified into the different subgroups.
