When judging the ground by core-logging, depth of coring might be stopped by coming into view of the moderately weathered rock and also considered as bedrock line. However, highly weathered rock may appear again, if coring more, because there are core-stones in the residual soil and highly weathered rock by the effect of hydraulic-thermal differentiation and does the irregular rock weathering or metamorphic rock region. Therefore, there are room for misunderstanding of diagnosing the moderately weathered rock. Even though the irregular ground where the corestones were come out will show clear geotechnical differences between the ground and the gradually weathered bedrock, nowadays, the construction sites do not take into account the characteristic of core-stone region. In conclusion, to study the failure-strength characteristics of soil layers containing core-stones, we made artificial core-stones and varied percentage of corestones, and measured cohesion and friction factors to adjust them to construction sites containing corestones such as slope, tunnel, and underground.
This study shows the prediction of the engineering properties of weathered zone bearing corestones through the engineering geological surveys and the scale model test in the laboratory. The window survey and the observation on the borehole core were peformed on three natural slopes in corestones area in order to analyse the distribution pattern and the geometrical properties of corestones. Natural corestones were crushed and abrased for the scale model test into less than 5 mm in maximum-2mm in average by the scale reduction ratio based on the size of natural corestones and the specimen size. Scale model tests were carried out on soil and plaster model specimens with different corestone content ratio - 0%, 10%, 20%. The direct shear test on soils shows that shear strength is increased by the increase of corestone content ratio. The increase of cohesion is, however, more important factor to the shear strength of soil for 20% corestone content ratio due to interlocking of crushed corestone particles. The plaster model test shows a tendance of increase of UCS and modulus of elasticity with increase of corestone content. The variation ratio of specimen property by change of corestone content ratio in plaster model test was applied to in situ properties in order to estimate the properties of weathered zone bearing corestones. So it could be predicted that the increase of corestone content to 10% and to 20% produce about 18% and 30% UCS's increase respectively.

We have carried out numerical compression experiments to estimate the mechanical properties (Mohr-Coulomb and elastic) of corestone-bearing saprolites in Beolgyo area. The studied saprolite, consisting of mechanically much stronger corestone and weaker matrix, is a weathering product of the Precambrian granitic gneiss in the Youngnam massif. Since the saprolite consists of larger corestones with diameter up to 2m, it is impossible to directly measure the mechanical properties by physical experiments. We have measured the mechanical properties of corestone and matrix from naturally occurring saprolite and have used them as a reference for our numerical model. Then, we mixed each material and carried out biaxial compression tests while varying the volume percentage of corestones from 0 to 57%. We found that both cohesion and internal friction angle increase with the volume percentage of corestones while elastic modulus remains constant. We found the results from numerical experiments are in contradiction to what is known from physical experiments using artificial saprolites. This may be due to a possibility that the sharp and discrete nature of interface between corestone and matrix in physical experiments differs from the gradual interfacial nature in numerical modelling and natural saprolites.

The granites in the Gyeongju area are represented by the Namsan granites and the Tohamsan granodiorites. In this study I examined the geomorphological and geological characteristics of the granite landforms in the Gyeongju area. Joint, tor and corestones are most identifiable geomorphological and geological structure in the study areas. Tor in the Namsan granites is well developed and mainly composed of cubic corestones. Petrographical features of the stones used for the stone-built cultural properties are compared with those of the granites cropped out nearby. Additionally radiogenic element contents (K, Th, U) were acquired for comparison by gamma-ray spectrometer analysis. Most stones from the stone-built cultural properties in the Bulguksa Temple are very similar to the Namsan granites in terms of petrography, radiogenic elements. On the contrary almost all stones from the Seokguram Grotto share common petrographical, physical and chemical characteristics with the Tohamsan granodiorites. Therefore it can be suggested that the stones in the Bulguksa Temple were supplied from Namsan, and that the stones in the Seokgurarn Grotto were collected at nearby Tohamsan.

Granitic regolith profile in Goseong, southern Korea, reveals various types of corestones from unweathered round fresh rocks to decomposed rock cores with unweathered spheroidal rock-layers on outer surface, deep weathering profile with 10m in depth, and red saprolite usually cited as related to high temperature climatic environment. In respect of this optical features such as the depth and the color of the profile, Goseong granitic profile may be regarded as products of paleoclimate with more high temperature and humidity than the present. But it is revealed that halloysite is a predominant clay mineral in upper part as well as lower part by XRD analysis. Halloysite is dominant mineral in hydrothermal alteration milieu. The leaching rate of chemical components is up to 97%, very high compared to common granite profiles with 60~70% in Korean peninsula. So, it is assumed that granitic red regolith in Goseong is a product of hydrothermal alteration, not meteoric weathering.
Properties of sliding materials are dependent on the lithology because debris is the product of rock weathering processes. In order to characterize transportation behavior of debris dependent of debris types, this study selected 26 debris flows over three areas composed with different rock weathering types and topographic conditions. Analyses of lithology, weathering, and topographic characteristics were performed by detailed field survey. Based on the field survey data, transportation behavior of debris was studied at the aspect of the relationship of grain size and volume of debris as well as topographic conditions. According to the study results, change of slope angle is very influential factor on runout distance of debris among the topographic factors. Because the sliding velocity and the energy of debris are frequently changed and more irregular on an undulating slope, the unout distance of debris is larger than that of an uniformly dipping slope. Runout distance of debris is also influenced by volume and grain size of debris. Volume of debris in the gabbro is four or five times larger than that of the granite area because it is controlled by the lithology. Considered with grain size distribution, runout distance of debris is longer in the gabbro area which is composed with irregular grain size bearing large corestones than that in the medium grained granite area.
In this study we examined the geomorphological and geological characteristics of the granite landforms in the Iksan area. Moreover we investigated the source areas of stones which are used to build the Mieruksaji west stone pagoda. Joint is most identifiable geomorphological and geological structure in the Iksan area. Direction of J1 joint appears to be N71°E∼EW, and that of J2 joint ranges N20°W∼N20°E. Cross-pattern joint is predominant in the study area, and linen.-pattern vertical joint is also observed. Tor and corestone are easily found as geomorphological features in the study area. Corestones forming for are almost 2∼3 m across and 2∼3 m or over 5 m high. Their hardness is mainly of hammer bounce. Tower-type and castle-type of for are characteristic in the Mireuksan granites. Other geomorphological features such as tafoni, gnamma are also observed in the study area. Petrographical and geochemical features of the stones used for the Mireuksaji west stone pagoda are compared with those of the granites cropped out nearby, and indicate that the stones from the Mieruksaji west stone pagoda are quite similar to the Mireuksan granites. In the Mireuksan we can easily find lots of old traces for rock cutting.

Rock rebound values and chemical compositions of Gamak island at Sangha, Gochang, Jeollabuk do are analysed as a part of geomorphic survey of that area. Some corestones are formed by deep weathering found from the summit of rock mass of Gamak island, while the rocks a part of weathering front are exposed at the foot of the island. Rebound values of rock increase toward coastal plain, so summit would be weak in resistance to erosion. It can be assumed that chemical weathering is more active at the summit by the chemical index of alteration and changes in chemical composition ratio. However it should be mentioned that the samples are taken from the surface of the rock mass that more fresh part will be exposed when the weathered parts are removed. The chemical composition and CIA values of the polygonal cracks found from on the surface of weathering rind showed that this part has values between those of the summit and the footslope. The bottom of weathering rind with polygonal cracks has higher CIA value than those of the surface. Though it supports the result from the Bisul Mt., there also difference in the ratio of SiO2. It looks caused by the difference in weathering environment and chemical difference in parent rock. In summary Gamak island is the remnants of weathering front after removal of weathered material. The removal processes are more active at the footslope where the coastal processes are stronger than the summit.
