  • In this paper, coordinated space division multiple access(SDMA) technology is proposed to mitigate inter-cell interference by using partial channel state information in cooperative wireless communications system with limited feedback. Each AT selects an optimal cluster transmission mode and sends it back to a cluster scheduler, and at the cluster scheduler, ATs are scheduled within a AT group with the identical cluster transmission mode, and the optimal transmission mode and the corresponding scheduled ATs are determined to maximize scheduling priority. Also, in order to enhance multiuser diversity gain, an extended transmission feedback method is proposed to feed back multiple preferred cluster transmission modes at each AT. It is shown that the proposed coordinated SDMA scheme outperforms existing non-coordinated SDMA schemes in terms of the average system throughput.

  • In this paper, we provide a general expression of spatial multiplexing gain (SMG) for two mutually interfering multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels, referred to as MIMO-IBC, when some of user messages are made available to base stations through a common noiseless backbone line. The MIMO-IBC has two base stations and multiple users, each equipped with multiple antennas, where independent messages are transmitted over fixed channels. From the derived results, we observe the variation of the SMG with respect to the presence of a coordination as well as various antenna distributions, and compare the derived result to the SMG of the case with full cooperation among users.

  • In this paper, a new scheme of downlink co-channel interference (CCI) cancellation in OFDM cellular networks is introduced for users at the cell-edge. Coordinated symbol transmission between base stations (BS) is operated where the same symbol is transmitted from different BS on different sub-carriers. At the mobile station (MS) receiver, we introduce a soft decision maximum likelihood CCI canceler and a modified maximum ratio combining (M-MRC) to obtain an estimate of the transmitted symbols. Weights used in the combining method are derived from the channels coefficients between the cooperated BSs and the MS. Simulations show that the proposed scheme works well under frequency-selective channels and frequency non-selective channels. A gain of 9 dB and 6 dB in SIR is obtained under multipath fading and flat-fading channels, respectively.

  • This paper examines the resource gain that can be obtained from the creation of clusters of nodes in densely populated areas. A single node within each such cluster is designated as a "hotspot"; all other nodes then communicate with a destination node, such as a base station, through such hotspots. We propose a semi-distributed algorithm, referred to as coordinated cognitive tethering (CCT), which clusters all nodes and coordinates hotspots to tether over locally available white spaces. CCT performs the following these steps: (a) groups nodes based on a modified k-means clustering algorithm; (b) assigns white-space spectrum to each cluster based on a distributed graph-coloring approach to maximize spectrum reuse, and (c) allocates physical-layer resources to individual users based on local channel information. Unlike small cells (for example, femtocells and WiFi), this approach does not require any additions to existing infrastructure. In addition to providing parallel service to more users than conventional direct communication in cellular networks, simulation results show that CCT can increase the average battery life of devices by 30%, on average.

  • In this paper, three coordinated random beamforming (CRBF) schemes are analyzed in a two-cell symmetric interference channel. A simple partial coordination of RBF with base station selection (BSS) is shown to achieve the same average sum rate performance of CRBF with joint encoding (JE). To improve the sum rate performance further, we also propose a transmission mode selection (TMS) between the BSS and JE which is shown to have additional sum rate gain for the large number of users. Simulation results verify the eectiveness of the proposed CRBF schemes and accuracy of the proposed analysis.

  • In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous network (HetNet) consisting of one macro base station and multiple small base stations, and assume the coordinated multi-point transmission between the base stations. In addition, we assume that the channel between the base station and the user consists of path loss and Rayleigh fading. Under these assumptions, we present the energy efficiency (EE) achievable by the user for a given base station and we formulate an optimization problem of dynamic cell selection and transmit power allocation to maximize the total EE of the HetNet. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised deep learning method to solve the optimization problem. The proposed deep learning-based scheme can provide high EE while having low complexity compared to the conventional iterative convergence methods. Through the simulation, we show that the proposed dynamic cell selection scheme provides higher EE performance than the maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio scheme and the Lagrangian dual decomposition scheme, and the proposed transmit power allocation scheme provides the similar performance to the trust region interior point method which can achieve the maximum EE.

  • With the explosive deployment of the wireless communications technology, the increased QoS requirement has sparked keen interest in network planning and optimization. As the major players in wireless network optimization, the BS's resource utilization and mobile user's QoS can be improved a lot by the load-balancing technology. In this paper, we propose a load-balancing strategy that uses Coordinated Multiple Points (CoMP) technology among the Base Stations (BS) to effectively extend network coverage and increase edge users signal quality. To use universally, different patterns of load-balancing based on CoMP are modeled and discussed. We define two QoS metrics to be guaranteed during CoMP load balancing: call blocking rate and efficient throughput. The closed-form expressions for these two QoS metrics are derived. The load-balancing capacity and QoS performances with different CoMP patterns are evaluated and analyzed in low-dense and high-dense traffic system. The numerical results present the reasonable CoMP load balancing pattern choice with guaranteed QoS in each system.

  • In this paper, joint transmission space division multiple access(JT-SDMA) scheme is proposed to mitigate inter-cell interference(ICI) in cooperative wireless communications system with limited feedback. We propose a systematic design method for a codebook consisting of a finite number of unitary matrices suitable for network multiple-input multiple-output( MIMO) channel characteristics. A centralized cluster scheduling scheme is proposed to both mitigate ICI and maximizes multiuser diversity gain with limited feedback. It is shown that the proposed JT-SDMA scheme outperforms a existing coordinated SDMA scheme even in wireless network environments where sufficient multiuser diversity order can not be provided through efficient ICI mitigation.

  • In this paper, collision avoidance beamforming(CA-BF) technology is proposed to mitigate inter-cell interference in cooperative wireless communications system with limited feedback. Each acess terminal(AT) selects both the best BF weight vector for a serving base transceiver station(BTS) and the most interfering BF weight vectors of interfering BTSs within a cluster, and sends it back to a cluster scheduler. At the cluster scheduler, a set of transmit BF weights of BTSs and the corresponding scheduled ATs are jointly determined to avoid collision among beams formed by BTSs within a cluster, which enhances system throughput by mitigating inter-cell interference. It is shown that the proposed CA-BF outperforms existing non-coordinated BF schemes in terms of the average system throughput.

  • Even though extensive research results have been applied to wireless cellular systems to improve their capacity and coverage, severe performance degradation experienced in cell boundary areas still remains as a major limiting factor to prohibit further improvement of user equipment (UE) throughput. In the Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) standard of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Some advanced techniques have been introduced to overcome this "cell-edge problem", including coordinated multipoint transmission and reception (CoMP) and inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC). In this paper, we propose yet another strategy to improve the performance of low-tier UEs by using the concept of multiple beam direction patterns (BDPs). Such multiple BDPs can be implemented using multi-layer antenna arrays stacked vertically at base station (BS) sites to transmit signals in different main beam directions. In comparison to conventional three-sector antennas with a fixed beam pattern, the proposed methods makes signal transmission in a rotational fashion to significantly enhance the reception quality of UEs located near sector (or cell) edge areas, preventing the situation where certain UEs are marginally covered by the BS for the whole transmission time. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional three-sector transmission by 171% in low 5% UEs in terms of the UE throughput.
