  • The present study is performed to set up the framework of cooling tower performance predictions. The performance of mechanical forced draft cooling tower is directly related to the state of a nuclear power plant system, such as the condenser and evaporator. The main parameters related to the state of systems are as follows : wet bulb temperature, dry bulb temperature and absolute humidity. The performance evaluation of cooling tower must be considered at the power plant design. In this study, the toolkit developed by the American Cooling Tower Industry association (CTI) has been used for the framework construction. In order to validate the framework, it is being applied to the cooling tower constructed for the U.S. Nuclear Power Plant. The test results have shown good agreements with the cold water temperature on the cooling tower performance curves provided by manufacturers.

  • The present study has been conducted to examine the effect of obstacles around a cooling tower and an air-guide to prevent recirculation. In order to analyze the interaction between external flow and cooling tower exit flow, the external region as well as the cooling, tower are included in computational domain. Two dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method with non-orthogonal and unstructured grid system. The standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used. To investigate the recirculation phenomena, flow and temperature fields are calculated with three approaches such as, the distance between cooling tower and obstacle, the allocated geometrical type, and the effect of height of obstacle. In addition, the air-guide is considered in the current computation. The mean recirculation rate increases with the height of obstacle. The effect of air-guide to reduce the mean recirculation rate is obviously observed.

  • Cooling tower is an important equipment of the cooling systems for large buildings like factory and department store. Water used for cooling in cooling tower is reused continuously. If the water is polluted, corrosion and scale can happen at equipments and pipes. In order to prevent this problem, it is necessary to control the water quality using chemicals. To control the water quality, an automatic control system is designed, fabricated, and experimented. The control system is based on an imbedded microcontroller. Relays are used for power driving, an LCD and LED for display, and RS485 for remote data acquisition. Monitoring program is also developed for easy man-machine interface and extraction of data stored in the imbedded processor and EEPROM. The control system calculates amounts of chemicals necessary using sensor data and injects the chemicals into the cooling tower on proper time. The developed water quality control system is expected to reduce cost of maintenance and extend the lifetime of the cooling systems with low cost.

  • The cooling tower is a device for making a cooling water in the air conditioning system of building, and there are many kinds of cooling tower system for air conditioner. In this paper, we introduced the water cooling system with an enclosed tank and water ejecting system for evaporating the water in tank. The city water was used for a working fluid, and the cooling water is generated by evaporating latent heat in the tank with a $25{\sim}50mmHg$. The time to reaching this vacuum pressure was about $20{\sim}30minutes$, and cooling water was obtained the value of temperature difference ${\Delta}T=7^{\circ}C$.

  • The general cooling tower is a device for making a cooling water in refrigerant condensers or industrial process heat exchangers. The present cooling tower have defects with noises, complicated structure and environmental problems. In this paper, we constituted a new water cooling system by using a evaporating latent heat in an enclosed tank, and this system is consisted of an enclosed vacuum tank and water driving ejector system. Several experimental cases were carried out for improvement methods of high vacuum pressure and water cooling characteristics. The ejector performance was tested in case of water temperature variations that flows in the ejector. Based on the vacuum pressure by water driving ejector, the water cooling characteristics were investigated for the vaporized air condensing effects.

  • An closed cooling tower is a device similar to a general cooling tower, but with cooling tower replaced by a heat exchanger. The purpose of this study is to evaluate thermal performance of heat exchanger at various conditions and to provide design datebase. The experimental study regarding heat exchanger for closed cooling tower was conducted. Experimental apparatus consists of constant temperature bath, water pump, spray nozzle, heat exchanger, fan, and date acquisition system. Heat transfer rates at various air velocitys, water flow rates, two different spray modes were measured and heat transfer coefficient were calculated to compare the thermal performances. This study provides that the heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing spray water flow rate and with increasing air velocity. The wet mode was more effective than dry mode for closed cooling tower to this study.

  • In this paper, the analysis of hyperbolic cooling tower on elastic subsoil exposed to unsymmetrical wind loading is presented. Modified Vlasov foundation model is used to determine the soil parameters as a function of vertical deformation profile within subsoil. The iterative parameter updating procedure involves the use of Open Application Programming Interface (OAPI) feature of SAP2000 to provide two way data flow during execution. A computing tool coded in MATLAB employing OAPI is used to perform the analysis of hyperbolic cooling tower with supporting columns over a hollow annular raft founded on elastic subsoil. The analysis of such complex soil-structure system is investigated under self-weight and unsymmetrical wind load. The response of the cooling tower on elastic subsoil is compared with that of a tower that its supporting raft foundation is treated as fixed at the base. The results show that the effect of subsoil on the behavior of cooling tower is considerable at the top and bottom of the wall as well as supporting columns and raft foundation. The application of a full-size cooling tower has demonstrated that the procedure is simple, fast and can easily be implemented in practice.

  • An accumulated crack damage which propagates progressively with time was frequently observed on several engineering structures, This paper numerically demonstrates this damage process on large cooling tower shells under thermal and wind loads. Damage states under varying loads are investigated and the influence of this progressive damage process on the life-cycle of cooling towers discussed. The paper presents briefly some fundamentals of the geometrically and physically non-linear numerical analysis employed for reinforced concrete, especially concerning the models used for concrete, steel reinforcement and the bond between them. As a numerical example an existing cooling tower with noticeable meridian crack damage is analysed. The existing damage state of the cooling tower is determined by quasi-static analyses for temperature, hygric and cyclic wind leading. The change in the dynamical behaviour of the structure as mirrored in its natural frequencies and mode shapes is presented and discussed. Finally, the example shows that such damage processes develop progressively over the life-time of the structures.

  • Cooling towers are widely used not only for cooling products and equipment in manufacturing process but HVAC(Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system. As a cooling tower is the terminal apparatus which discharges heat from industrial process, the efficiency of heat exchange in the cooling tower greatly affects to the overall performance of a thermal system. In this paper, we constituted a new water cooling system by using a Latent heat of evaporation in an enclosed tank, and this system is consisted of an enclosed vacuum tank and water driven ejector system. • The paper focuses on the seismic responses of a hyperbolic cooling tower resting on soil foundation represented by the three-parameter Vlasov elastic soil model. The three-parameter soil model eliminates the necessity of field testing to determine soil parameters such as reaction modulus and shear parameter. These parameters are calculated using an iterative procedure depending on the soil surface vertical deformation profile in the model. The soil and tower system are modeled in SAP2000 structural analysis program using a computing tool coded in MATLAB. The tool provides a two-way data transfer between SAP2000 and MATLAB with the help of Open Application Programming Interface (OAPI) feature of SAP2000. The response spectrum analyses of the tower system with circular V-shaped supporting columns and annular raft foundation on elastic soil are conducted thanks to the coded tool. The shell and column forces and displacements are presented for different soil conditions and fixed raft base condition to investigate the effects of soil-structure interaction. Numerical results indicate that the flexibility of soil foundation leads to an increase in displacements but a decrease in shell membrane and column forces. Therefore, it can be stated that the consideration of soil-structure interaction in the seismic response analysis of the cooling tower system provides an economical design process.
