According to the Korea industrial standard of air conditioning systems (KS C 9306), cooling and heating loads for buildings can be calculated by using maximum and minimum temperature in BIN data. Cooling and heating loads can be determined by building set temperature and ambient temperature. Cooling and heating system capacity of buildings can be normally designed according to determined heating and cooling loads. Cooling and heating system capacity can be reduced by updated BIN data, applying TAC (Technical Advisory Committee) values. In this study, updated BIN data have been analyzed using ambient temperature of 19 areas in Korea for the last 10 years (2005~2014) provided by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). Building cooling and heating loads have been calculated following TAC based BIN data. As a result, designed system capacity decreased depending on applying TAC. Those were reduced as 7.1% ($100m^2$ building), 8.7% ($1,000m^2$ building) in cooling capacity, 11.7% in heating capacity when TAC 2.5% applied. And also, it is expected system initial and operating cost by decreasing system capacity.
Energy loss from windows accounts for large scores of heating and cooling loads also in energy saving apartments that is reduced over 30% of total energy consumption. Movable reflective insulations, insulation shutters, blinds, insulated shades are used to reduce energy loads from windows. In this study, energy saving performance of insulated shades was simulated by control methods. According to installation of insulated shades, heating loads were decreased about 10.5~11.3%, and cooling loads are decreased about 29.1~38.3% on an energy saving apartment. The heating peak load was reduced about 9.5% by insulated shades and the cooling peak load was reduced about 25.7~31.5%. In the case of insulated shades with automatic control system, simple time schedule control system would be more efficient than outdoor detection control system that should use several sensors.
It is a time since sustainable architecture become a main issue of design concept in 21C. However, it is necessary to develope the tool estimating energy loads and uses in our architectural conditions for energy saving design. This study aims to develope the E-Load program to predict heat and cooling loads of houses. The program is developed by modified bin methods derived from ASHRAE TC 4.7. It consists of 4 divisions such as files, data inputs, energy load estimations and output options. The main processes of energy load estimations are based on ASHRAE fundamentals. The developed E-Load program is a easy and valid tool to predict heat and cooling loads of buildings.
In order to assess the reliability of a building energy simulation program (TRNSYS) from the standpoint of user, a set of verification experiment and calculation of cooling load for a test space is carried out. This work is a complement of the previous study that dealt with heating load for the same space. The test space is kept airtight to eliminate the source of uncertainties in modeling. A window-mounted, on/off controlled air-conditioner is used for cooling, whose performance has been established a priori. The calculation encompasses two models for evaluating cooling load in TRNSYS: energy rate control and temperature level control. Comparison of the total cooling loads obtained from different sets of experimental data enables to validate the measurements. The experimental result shows that the latent load is fairly large even in the absence of apparent air change in the space, which needs to be clarified. Each of hourly and daily accumulated sensible loads is compared between the experiment and two calculation models. Despite an inconsistency associated with solar irradiation, both of the models agree favorably with the experiment within a tolerance, illustrating their capability of properly predicting space thermal loads.
Purpose: Glazing and shading devices influence a lot on the thermal and visual environment in office buildings. Solar heat and daylight are contrary concept, therefore proper arrangement of thermal and optical performance is needed when designing a glazing and shading devices. The purpose of this study is to examine the conditions of the glazing and shading devices available for promoting the reduction of cooling loads + lighting loads and the improvement in thermal comfort and visual comfort for the summer season in an office building installed with venetian blind. Method: This study established 12 simulation cases which have different glazings and the positions of venetian blind for evaluating different thermal and optical performance. And by using EnergyPlus v8.1 and Window v7.2 program, we quantitatively analyzed cooling loads + lighting loads, thermal comfort and visual comfort in an office building installed with the glazing and shading devices. Result: Consequently, Case 9(Double Low-E+Exterior Blind) is the best arrangement of solar heat gain and daylight influx, thereby becomes the most excellent case of reducing cooling+lighting loads(46.8%) and simultaneously becomes the enhancement case in thermal comfort. Also, DGI(Daylight glare index) under clear sky conditions in summer was evaluated to be 19.6, and thereby satisfied the recommendation level of allowing visual comfort.
The heat loads invaded from the environment to several parts of superconduct cable cooling system were measured by liquid boiloff calorimetry. The measuring system was verified by the measurement to a uniform heat loads. The heat loads by the tubes for relief and pressure gauges were greater than the estimated.
An accumulated crack damage which propagates progressively with time was frequently observed on several engineering structures, This paper numerically demonstrates this damage process on large cooling tower shells under thermal and wind loads. Damage states under varying loads are investigated and the influence of this progressive damage process on the life-cycle of cooling towers discussed. The paper presents briefly some fundamentals of the geometrically and physically non-linear numerical analysis employed for reinforced concrete, especially concerning the models used for concrete, steel reinforcement and the bond between them. As a numerical example an existing cooling tower with noticeable meridian crack damage is analysed. The existing damage state of the cooling tower is determined by quasi-static analyses for temperature, hygric and cyclic wind leading. The change in the dynamical behaviour of the structure as mirrored in its natural frequencies and mode shapes is presented and discussed. Finally, the example shows that such damage processes develop progressively over the life-time of the structures.
In Korea, cooling power load, which occupies about 20% of peak load in 2000 and fluctuates depending on the popular usage of air conditioning systems, has been recently the focus of the load management. The first work of KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) to regulate cooling load as low as possible was to estimate its approximate scale and to develop the indirect methods to estimate it from the available time series data for the average hourly loads. However, KEPCO would like to have their methods improved both theoretically and practically. In this paper, we analyze their current indirect methods and detect their faults to design better indirect estimation methods. Under one of the assumptions of "no cooling load in April or May", the linear relationship between basic loads and GDP's, and the normalized seasonal factors of the Winters' multiplicative seasonal model, we provide ten indirect estimation methods in total and suggest the estimated cooling load(1988-1999) based on our various indirect methods.
The peak demand of electricity in summer season mainly comes from the day time cooling loads. Ice thermal Storage System (ITSS) uses off-peak electricity at night time to make ice for the day time cooling. In order to maximize the use of cold storage in ITSS, the estimation of day time cooling load for the building is necessary. In this study, we present a method of cooling load estimation using 5 years of normalized outdoor temperature, relative humidity, and the building construction data. We applied the hourly-based estimation to a general hospital building with relatively less sudden heat exchange and the results are compared with the measured cooling load of the building. The results show that the cooling loads estimation depends on the indoor cooling design temperature of the building.
