This paper describes a simple control structure and power conditioning system for an indirect vector controlled stand-alone induction generator (IG) used to operate under variable speed. The required reactive power for the IG system is supplied by means of a capacitor bank and a voltage-source PWM converter. Using a capacitor bank to transfer the reactive power to the IG under the rated speed and no-load conditions starts the IG operation and reduces the PWM converter size. The vector control structure for the variable speed IG power conditioning system compensates for changes in the electrical three-phase and DC loads while considering the magnetizing curve of the IG. The vector control structure is developed to regulate the DC link voltage of the PWM converter and the IG output voltage. The experimental and simulated performance results of the IG power conditioning system at various speeds and loads are given and show that this proposed scheme can be used efficiently for a variable speed, wind energy conversion system.
This paper proposes a pulse width modulation (PWM)-based sliding mode controller (SMC) for a full-bridge DC-DC converter that can eliminate static output voltage error. Hysteretic SMC in DC-DC converter does not have a fixed switching frequency, and applying hysteretic SMC to full-bridge converters is difficult. Fixed-frequency SMC, which is also called PWM-based SMC, based on equivalent control overcomes these shortcomings. However, the controller order reduction in equivalent control in PWM-based SMC causes static output voltage error. To resolve this issue, an integral item is added to the PWM-based SMC. Sliding mode coefficients are designed by applying a standard second-order system to the sliding mode surface. The effect of adding an integral item on the controller is analyzed, and an integral coefficient design method is proposed. Experiment results on a three-level full-bridge DC-DC converter verify the control scheme and design method proposed in this paper.

A simple and practical voltage balance method for a solid-state transformer (SST) is proposed to reduce the voltage difference of cascaded H-bridge converters. The tolerance device components in SST cause the imbalance problem of DC-link voltage in the H-bridge converter. The Max/Min algorithms of voltage balance controller are merged in the controller of an AC/DC rectifier to reduce the voltage difference. The DC-link voltage through each H-bridge converter can be balanced with the proposed control methods. The design and performance of the proposed SST are verified by experimental results using a 30 kW prototype.

In this paper, a performance of bi-directional DC/DC converter using PFM control at whole load range is analyzed. A bi-directional DC/DC converter using PFM control in this paper can be soft switching operation with LC series resonant circuit. It's difficult to expect a high efficiency at whole load range in general resonant converter because of limitation of soft switching area. Therefore converter used in this paper has a variable frequency PFM control to overcome a limitation of soft switching area and it makes a high efficiency at whole load range by implementing a soft switching at light load area of restricted soft switching. The high efficiency at whole load range is verified by simulation and experimental result.

The terminal voltage of a synchronous generator is maintained by the field current control of excitation system. Generally AC/DC converter which is component of AVR(Automatic Voltage Regulator) system for excitation current control is connected to diode rectifier and DC/DC converter system. In the case of diode rectifier system of phase controlled converter as AC/DC converter have low power factor and harmonics of lower order in the line current. In this paper, two stage three phase PWM AC/DC converter is studied to solve these problems. The characteristics of a proposed converter reduces the harmonics and reactive power of the distribution line and has fast dynamic response in transient period using boost converter and current control mode buck converts. The proposed method is verified by the computer simulation and experimental results in prototype generation system.
To supply a high voltage to an inverter, a motor control unit (MCU) generally employs a front-end boost converter. Because it generates a high output voltage, the converter needs an output capacitor, which has a high working voltage resulted in cost increasing. To solve this problem, we present a bidirectional dc-to-dc converter, which can decrease a working voltage of the output capacitor. Basic characteristic of the proposed converter is similar to a conventional boost converter. A difference comes from the structure of the output terminal connecting an output capacitor and an input battery in series. Owing to this circuit configuration, the working voltage of the output capacitor becomes lower than that of a conventional boost converter. After theoretical analysis, we carry out simulations and experiments to verify the validity and performance comparing with a conventional boost converter.
This paper is study on a new high efficiency DC-DC converter of discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) with zero voltage switching (ZVS). The converters of high efficiency are generally made that the power loss of the used semiconductor switching devices is minimized. The proposed converter is accomplished that the turn-on operation of switches is on zero current switching (ZCS) by DCM. The converter is also applicable to a new quasi-resonant circuit to achieve high efficiency converter. The control switches using in the converter are operated with soft switching, that is, ZVS and ZCS by quasi-resonant method. The control switches are operated without increasing their voltage and current stresses by the soft switching technology. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of the converter is high. The soft switching operation and the system efficiency of the proposed DCM-ZVS converter are verified by digital simulation and experimental results.

This paper propose a bidirectional dc-to-dc converter employing dual inductor for current ripple reduction. Conventional bidirectional dc-to-dc converter uses a single inductor for two different modes; boost and buck; therefore it is difficult to satisfy the optimized inductance value for each mode. To improve this problem, the proposed converter adds two switches, a diode, and one inductor. By proper switching of the additional switch, the proposed converter operates with a inductor in boost mode, but it works with dual inductor in buck mode. Hence in both modes the proposed bidirectional converter can be operated with optimized inductance values. Most of all the optimized inductance in buck mode can reduce the current ripple and its effective value(rms), which are directly related to the temperature increase resulted in short lifetime of battery. To verify the validity of the proposed approach, we first analyzes the operation of the proposed converter theoretically, and implement computer-aided simulations and experiments using a prototype.

This paper presents a new single phase front-end ac-dc bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) rectifier topology. The proposed converter achieves a high efficiency over a wide range of input and output voltages, a high power factor, low line current harmonics and both step up and step down voltage conversions. This topology is based on a non-inverting buck-boost (Zeta) converter. In this approach, the input diode bridge is removed and a maximum of one diode conducts in a complete switching period. This reduces the conduction losses and the thermal stresses on the switches when compare to existing PFC topologies. Inherent power factor correction is achieved by operating the converter in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) which leads to a simplified control circuit. The characteristics of the proposed design, principles of operation, steady state operation analysis, and control structure are described in this paper. An experimental prototype has been built to demonstrate the feasibility of the new converter. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the improved power quality at the AC mains and the lower conduction losses of the converter.
