  • In this work, the comprehensive structural dynamics codes including DYMORE and CAMRAD II are used to validate the higher harmonic control aeroacoustic rotor test (HART) II data in descending flight condition. A total of 16 finite elements along with 17 aerodynamic panels are used for the CAMRAD II analysis; whereas, in the DYMORE analysis, 10 finite elements with 31 equally-spaced aerodynamic panels are utilized. To improve the prediction capability of the DYMORE analysis, the finite state dynamic inflow model is upgraded with a free vortex wake model comprised of near shed wake and trailed tip vortices. The predicted results on aerodynamic loads and blade motions are correlated with the HART II measurement data for the baseline, minimum noise and minimum vibration cases. It is found that an improvement of solution, especially for blade vortex interaction airloads, is achieved with the free wake method employed in the DYMORE analysis. Overall, fair to good correlation is achieved for the test cases considered in this study.

  • A LNG safety valve functions to control a constant pressure inside the LNG line of transportation, and the flow through it accompanies with noise and vibration which affect adversely on the system. The present study aims at understanding the flow physics of LNG safety valve for a practical design of LNG safety valve. A computational work using the two-dimensional, axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations is carried out to simulate the gas flow through the LNG safety valve, and compared with the theoretical results. It is found that the shape of valve sheet and the gap size are the key parameters in determining the gas dynamic forces on the valve sheet, and there exists a distance between nozzle exit and valve sheet in which the thrust coefficient at the valve sheet increases abruptly.

  • The dynamic characteristics of the passive, semi-active, and active tuned-liquidcolumn dampers (or TLCDs) are studied in this paper. The design of the latter two are based on the first one. A water-head difference (or simply named as water head in this paper) of a passive TLCD is pre-set to form the so-called semi-active one in this paper. The pre-set of water head is released at a proper time instant during an earthquake excitation in order to enhance the vibration reduction of a structure. Two propellers are installed along a shaft inside and at the center of a passive TLCD to form an active one. These two propellers are driven by a servo-motor controlled by a computer to provide the control force. The seismic responses of a five-story shear building with a passive, semiactive, and active TLCDs are computed for demonstration and discussion. The responses of this building with a tuned mass damper (or TMD) are also included for comparison. The small-scale shaking-table experiments of a pendulum-like system with a passive or active TLCD to harmonic and seismic excitations are conducted for verification.

  • Recently, a long span is often required for the spacious building. Therefore the increase of stiffness is necessary to prevent floor vibration and control deformation of the building under earthquake and wind loads. For this purpose, steel beams with stiffened ends by reinforced concrete are effective. To realize such an effective reinforcement method, the smoothening of bending and shear stress transmission at the boundaries between middle-part of the steel beam and both end-parts of the steel beam with stiffened ends by reinforced concrete is required. Therefore, the fixed plate was installed at the boundary with the view of transferring the stress smoothly. This paper evaluates the method of effective transmission of bending and shear stress through the numerical analysis that is based on advanced experimental tests.

  • This paper presents an Electrotactile Display System (ETCS). One of the most important human sensory systems for human computer interaction is the sense of touch, which can be displayed to human through tactile output devices. To realize the sense of touch, electrotactile display produces controlled, localized touch sensation on the skin by passing small electric current. In electrotactile stimulation, the mechanoreceptors in the skin may be stimulated individually in order to display the sense of vibration, touch, itch, tingle, pressure etc. on the finger, palm, arm or any suitable location of the body by using appropriate electrodes and waveforms. We developed an ETCS and investigated effectiveness of the proposed system in terms of the perception of roughness of a surface by stimulating the palmar side of hand with different waveforms and the perception of direction and location information through forearm. Positive and negative pulse trains were tested with different current intensities and electrode switching times on the forearm or finger of the user with an electrode-embedded armband in order to investigate how subjects recognize displayed patterns and directions of stimulation.

  • Exercise of complete control on all aspects of any manufacturing / fabrication process is very difficult, leading to uncertainties in the material properties and geometric dimensions of structural components. This is especially true for laminated composites because of the large number of parameters associated with its fabrication. When the basic parameters like elastic modulus, density and Poisson's ratio are random, the derived response characteristics such as deflections, natural frequencies, buckling loads, stresses and strains are also random, being functions of the basic random system parameters. In this study the basic elastic properties of a composite lamina are assumed to be independent random variables. Perturbation formulation is used to model the random parameters assuming the dispersions small compared to the mean values. The system equations are analyzed to obtain the mean and the variance of the plate natural frequencies. Several application problems of free vibration analysis of composite plates, employing the proposed method are discussed. The analysis indicates that, at times it may be important to include the effect of randomness in material properties of composite laminates.

  • The dynamic characteristics of Control Element Drive Mechanism(CEDM) for Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant are studied with the CEDM modeled as a secondary mass in a simplified two degree of freedom system, while the reactor vessel as a primary mass. The optimal .mu.-f curve is developed to reduce the response amplitudes of both primary and secondary masses. In order to improve a design it is proposed that the natural frequency ratio, f, should be converged to 0.93, the mass ratio, .mu., should not be reduced, and the result should be converged to the optimal .mu.-f curve. Optimal design for CEDM components has been carried out and the response amplitude ratios of reactor are reduced 10.5 - 19.7% while those of CEDM are reduced 6.3 - 3.4%.

  • This paper performed a comprehensive evaluation of the results of the 2007 Ground Response Analysis Round Robin Test, at which 14 institutions and individuals participated. The submitted results showed significant discrepancies. The main reason for this difference has been attributed to the dispersion in the estimated shear wave velocity profiles and dynamic soil curves. It is therefore concluded that accurate evaluation of the material properties is of primary importance for reliable estimation of the ground vibration. Evaluation of the effect of the analysis method showed that the equivalent linear analysis overestimates the peak ground acceleration, but overall the results are similar to a total stress nonlinear analysis. However, the total and effective stress nonlinear analyses show distinct discrepancies, the effective stress analyses consistently resulting in a lower response due to the development of the excess pore water pressure and thus softer response.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose damper system which is easy to design, which can ensure against risks, and to verify earthquake response characteristics. For this study, the pseudo dynamic earthquake response tests carried out for steel frames with metallic damper. As a result, in case of using the metallic damper as a vibration control device proposed by this study, the damper having higher stiffness than main-structure turned to the state of plasticity by little displacement has been proved to be able to absorb earthquake energy.
