  • Observation satellites carrying high precision optical payload require extremely stringent pointing stability that may be violated in the presence of the disturbances corning from reaction wheels, cryocoolers or other actuating components onboard the satellite. The most common method to protect the sensitive payloads from external disturbances is implementation of vibration isolator. In this paper development of a single axis active vibration isolator using electromagnet and its performance in isolating micro-vibration is presented. The main components of the developed isolator are membrane structure providing the isolator with the required stiffness and an electromagnet for active control. The performance test results show that additional damping can be achieved by active control without degrading isolation performance in high frequency region and that the developed isolator can effectively isolate micro-vibration.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if an exercise program with vertical vibration can improve balance, walking speed, muscle strength and falls efficacy in the healthy elderly. METHODS: A total of 28 elderly were randomly divided into two groups: vertical vibration exercise group (exercise with vertical vibration) (N = 14) and control group (exercise without vibration) (N = 14). The exercise program, comprising calf raise, deep-squat, semi-squat, front lunge, and leg abduction was conducted with or without vibration, respectively. Subjects in each group participated in the 30 minutes training program, 2 times per week for 6 weeks. In both groups, the balance evaluation system (BT4) was used to evaluate standing balance, and walking speed was measured using the 10MWT. The manual muscle test system was applied to evaluate the knee extensor and ankle planter flexor muscle strength of the subjects, whereas the Korean falls efficacy scale (K-FES) evaluated the falls efficacy. RESULTS: After intervention, the vertical vibration group showed significantly higher changes compared to the control group, in the parameters of standing balance (P < .05), 10MWT (P < .05), left knee extensor (P < .05), right knee extensor (P < .01), both ankle plantar flexors (P < .05), and K-FES (P < .05). CONCLUSION: The exercise program with vertical vibration has the potential to improve balance, walking speed, muscle power and falls efficacy in the elderly.

  • The present paper deals with the dynamic stability and vibration suppression of a cantilevered flexible pipe with a concetrated mass under an internal fluid flow. The equations of motion are derived by energy expressions using Hamilton's pronciple, and some analytical results using Galerkin's method are presented. Finally, the vibration suppression technique by means of an internal fluid flow is demonstrated experimentally.

  • In this study, various problems of ground vibration from rock blasting have been discussed, and field tests of rock blasting-ground vibration were carried out to find out the system of evaluation and control method for selecting blast design values and the rationale for the selection. Criterla of estimating structural response and damage caused by ground vibration from rock blasting are also discussed for the safety design of blast.

  • The vibration resulting from track-train interaction is transmitted through the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground to adjacent buildings. This paper provides a review of the ground vibration propagation mechanism and the theoretical isolation effectiveness of each transit systems. Moreover, predictive vibration values estimated from various models are compared with measured results performed in Seoul Metropolitan Subways and evaluate the applicability of those models.

  • The transmission of sound and vibration through structures is of interest in many noise control problems, including architectural acoustics, sound transmission through air craft, spacecraft and ship, and the transmission of noise through machinery and engine enclosures. Statistical Energy Analysis provides a simple and accurate method of approaching these problems. In this paper, comparing the measured coupling loss factor of plate-beam with measured coupling loss factor of mass on the junction will be inspected.
