  • The effects of packing materials in the anaerobic reactor and inorganic chemicals in the synthetic wastewater on the anaerobic treatment during the start up period were investigated using anaeroic filter process. The Ringlace and Honeycomb tube as packing materials were used in the anaerobic reactors. The Ca$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ ion concentration as inorganic chemicals contained higher 40 times and 100 times as compared to the control synthetic wastewater, respectively. A start up period 104 and 150 days were necessary to achieve loading rate of 0.37 and 0.74 kg-Toc/m$^3$.d in the anaerobic filter process packed by Ringlace and Honeycomb tube, respectively. The loading rates of the reactor using the synthetic wastewater containing Ca$^{2+}$ (40 times) could be increased faster than in the reactors using the synthetic wastewater containing Fe$^{2+}$ ion (100 times) and control synthetic wastewater. The results of XMA analysis that a lot of the Ca$^{2+}$ ion on the surface of the anaerobic sludge in the anaerobic reactor packed by Ringlace which were fed supplied with synthetic wastewater containing Ca$^{2+}$ ion (40 times) observed as compared to the reactors supplied with control synthetic wastewater and containing Fe$^{2+}$ ion (100 times).

  • The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of ascorbic acid on the blood pressure of SHR in established phase. Twenty SHR at age of 23 weeks were divided into two groups; The control group and the ascorbic acid group in which 3 mg/kg/day ascorbic acid was orally administered for 10 weeks. The results obtained were as follows; 1) In the control group the systolic pressure($192.7{\pm}4.2\;mmHg$ at O week) tended to increase gradually throughout the entire experimental period. 2) In the experimental group the systolic pressure($193.5{\pm}3.5\;mmHg$ at O week) was generally lower as compared with that of control group. A significant difference in the blood pressure was observed between two groups at 3 rd and 4 th week of experimental period. Though it is impossible from the result of present study to elucidate the exact mechanism of blood pressure lowering effect of ascorbic acid, it is inferred that ascorbic acid may exert its effect at the vascular walls.

  • This paper presents a shunt active power filter (SAPF) for compensating inter-harmonics and harmonics when inter-harmonics content is evident in the grid. The principle of inter-harmonics generation in the grid was analyzed, and the inter-harmonics effect on repetitive controllers was discussed in terms of control performance. Traditional repetitive controllers are not applicable in inter-harmonic compensation. Moreover, the effect of an ideal controller on harmonics signals was analyzed on the basis of the internal model principle. The repetitive controller was improved in the form of a basis function according to theoretical analysis. The finite-dimensional repetitive controller, which is also called the multiple-period repetitive controller, was designed for the control of multiple periodic signals. A selective harmonic compensation system was developed with SAPF. This system can be used to compensate harmonics and inter-harmonics in the grid. Finally, system control performance was verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • This study was investigated the effects of feeding the combination with Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis on the diarrhea incidence and fecal microflora of weaned calves. A total of 12 newly weaned calves were allocated to two dietary treatments in a randomized design based on body weight. The dietary treatments included a commercial basal diet supplemented with: 1) no microbial inoculants (Control); 2) a mixture of Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis (LB). Calves were fed diets for a 4-week period. At the end of the experiment, the counts of fecal lactic acid bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae in LB were significantly improved compared to control (P<0.05). Over the 4-week period, fecal scores and duration of diarrhea in LB were significantly decreased compared with those in control (P<0.05). The present results suggest that LB is a potential feed additive which could be used for the balance of intestinal microflora and the prevention of diarrhea in Korean native calves.

  • Cow feces excreted in cold season should be managed and composted properly, because the composted feces is distributed to pasture or cultivated land as a fertilizer in spring. Generally it is admitted that the effect of composting is suppressed by low temperature in cold season. In this study, composting piles were warmed by hot air until temperature of compost piles were reached at 35∼40$^{\circ}C$, to compare composting effect of experimental compost pile to control pile exposed in cold air. Some results obtained from the experiment during composting of cow feces mixed with bulking agent provide a possibility of active composting of organic matters in cold season. The biodegradation ratios of organic matter during composting in four types of composts were 10.2% for the rice straw, 7.7% for the rice hull, 6.4% for the sawdust and 4.3% for the control. The highest temperatures of compost piles during composting period were 76$^{\circ}C$ in sawdust, 80$^{\circ}C$ in rice hull, 68$^{\circ}C$ in rice straw, 45$^{\circ}C$ in control. Moisture content, pH, C/N, volume of compost were decreased during composting period, but EC value was increased with ionization of organic molecular by fermentation.

  • Purpose:This study was conducted to investigate whether modified CIMT with Kinesio-Taping on paretic upper limb effects upper limb function in stroke patients in comparison to those receiving only modified CIMT. Methods:20 out-patients with hemiplegia were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. Both groups received modified CIMT during a 10-week period. Additionally, an experimental group received modified CIMT with Kinesio-Taping on paretic upper limb and trunk. Results:In Manual function test, Grip strength, Jebsen-Taylor hand function test, MAL(Motor Activity Log) and Functional independence measure (FIM) were significantly different at all intervals of the study period(0, 3, 6, 10-week) in the experimental and control groups(p<.05). Exceptionally there was no significant difference in Jebsen-Taylor hand function test between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion:These results suggest that modified CIMT with Kinesio-taping improve the upper limb function. And also increase usage of affected upper limb and assist in daily living activity more than only modified CIMT.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of multimodal sensory stimulation on growth and mother-infant interaction in infants with low birth weight (LBW). Method: A non-equivalent control group time-series study design was used. The participants were 38 LBW infants and their mothers (19 in the intervention group and 19 in the control group). The data were collected from September 1, 2003 to March 31, 2004. For the mothers in the intervention group, this researcher instructed mothers in the multimodal sensory stimulation therapy, in turn the mothers used these techniques on their infants once a day during the 4-week research period. The researcher measured weight, length, and head circumference of the LBW infants once a week for 4 weeks and made a film of the mother playing with the infant for 5 minutes in the last week of the research period. Results: Compared to the control group, LBW infants in the intervention group showed significant increases in weekly weight gain (F=3.82, p=.012) and had significantly higher scores for mother-infant interaction (t=3.93, p>.000). Conclusion: The results suggest that multimodal sensory stimulation therapy can be used to increase the growth of LBW infants and improve mother-infant interaction.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the effects of an infant massage on physical growth and stress response in preterm babies. Method: A nonequivalent control group with pre-posttest design was used with 56 preterm babies in the NICU of E medical center at Daejeon. Data were collected from July 2004 to May 2005. The intervention was given for 15 minutes, once a day for 7 days. Physical growth was measured by weight, length, head circumference, and stress response was measured by serum cortisol level. Mean, %, paired-test, t-test with the SPSS/W in 16.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: After the intervention, physical growth variables (weight, length, head circumference) in experimental group were higher than that of the control group. Also, the serum cortisol level in the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. But none of these results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a 7-day intervention period may not be long enough to confirm the effects of infant massage on physical growth and stress reaction. Therefore it is suggested that a longer period of infant massage should be tested to determine if it is effective in improving the physical growth and stress reduction in preterm babies.

  • The addition of green tea to kimchi making for extanding the optimum edible period was studied. The equality and sensory characteristics of green tea added kimchi were evaluated. The acidity, lactic acid and acetic acid contents of green tea added kimchi showed lower than that of control kimchi but reducing sugar and vitamin C contents was higher. The duration of optimum edible periods of green tea added kimchi lasted two more weeks. While the optimum pH of kimchi for eating lasted, the sensory pannel score for sour taste of green tea added kimchi was lower than that of control but the scores for overall quality and hardness were higher. Especially, the sour taste score between two groups were significantly different(p<0.05). There was no differences in texture determined by Penetrometer between green tea added kimchi and control kimchi until the fermentation reached the optimal condition for eating. After that period, the degree of degradation of texture was much delayed in green tea added kimchi.
