  • Lots of semi-active control devices have been developed in recent years because they have the best features of passive and active system. Especially, controllable magneto-rheological(MR) fluid devices have received significant attention in these area of research. The MR fluid is the material that reversibly changes from a free-flowing, linear viscous fluid to a semisolid with a controllable yield strength in milliseconds when exposed to a magnetic field. If the magnetic field is induced by moving a permanent magnet instead of applying current to a solenoid, it is possible to design a MR damper consuming low power because the power consumption is reduced at steady state. This paper proposes valve mode MR damper using permanent magnetic circuit that has wide range of operation with low power consumption and small size. To design a MR damper that has a large maximum dissipating torque and a low damping coefficient, a design parameter is adopted. The magnetic circuit, material of choke and choke type are selected experimentally with the design parameter. The behaviors of the damper are examined and torque tracking control using PID feedback controller is performed for step, ramp and sinusoidal trajectories.

  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation requires an electric field composed of dozens of V/m to achieve stimulation. The stimulation system is composed of a stimulation coil to form the electric field by charging and discharging a capacitor in order to save energy, thus requiring high-pressure kV. In particular, it is charged and discharged in capacitor to discharge through stimulation coil within a short period of time (hundreds of seconds) to generate current of numerous kA. A pulse-type magnetic field is formed, and eddy currents within the human body are triggered to achieve stimulation. Numerous pulse forms must be generated to initiate eddy currents for stimulating nerves. This study achieved high internal pressure, a high number of repetitions, and rapid switching of elements, and it implemented numerous control techniques via introduction of the half-bridge parallel load method. In addition it applied a quick, accurate, high-efficiency charge/discharge method for transcranial magnetic stimulation to substitute an inexpensive, readily available, commercial frequency condenser for a previously used, expensive, high-frequency condenser. Furthermore, the pulse repetition rate was altered to control energy density, and grafts compact, one-chip processor with simulation to stably control circuit motion and conduct research on motion and output characteristics.

  • We have developed an alternating magnetic field stimulation system consisting of a switched-mode power supply and a digital control circuit which modulates a duty ratio to maintain a magnetic field intensity of a few mT even while the frequency increases up to 4 kHz with a controllable coil temperature below $30^{\circ}C$ in air. This duty ratio modulation and water circulation are advantageous for cell culture under ac-magnetic field stimulation by preventing the incubator from exceeding a cell-viable temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. Although the temperature of the coil when subjected to a sinusoidal voltage rapidly increased, that of our system modulated by the duty factor did not change. This is a potentially valuable method to investigate the effects of intermediate frequency magnetic field stimulation on biological entities such as cells, tissues and organs.

  • We analyzed the fault current limiting characteristics of a flux-lock type $high-T_c$ superconducting fault current limiter (HTSC-FCL) using series resonance between capacitor for series resonance and magnetic field coil which was installed in coil 3. The capacitor for the series resonance in the flux-lock type HTSC-FCL was inserted in series with the magnetic field coil to apply enough magnetic field into HTSC element, which resulted in higher resistance of HTSC element. However, the impedance of the flux lock type HTSC-FCL has started to decrease since the current of coil 3 exceeded one of coil 2 after a fault accident. The decrease in the impedance of the FCL causes the line current to increase and, if continues, the capacitor for the series resonance to be destructed. To avoid this operation, the flux-lock type HTSC-FCL requires an additional device such as fault current interrupter or control circuit for magnetic field. From the experimental results, we investigated the parameter range where the operation as mentioned above for the designed flux-lock type HTSC-FCL using series resonance occurred.

  • This paper presents an electromagnetic design method for magneto-rheological (MR) valves. Since the apparent viscosity of MR fluids is adjusted by applying magnetic fields, the MR valves can control high-level fluid power without any mechanical moving parts. In order to improve the performances of the MR valve, it is important that the magnetic field is effectively supplied to the MR fluid. For the purpose, the magnetic circuit composed with the yoke for forming magnetic flux path, the electromagnetic coil and the MR fluid should be well designed. In order to improve the static characteristic of the MR valve, the length of the magnetic flux path is decreased by removing the unnecessary bulk of the yoke. Also, in order to improve its dynamic and hysteretic characteristics, the magnetic reluctance of the magnetic circuit should be increased by minimizing the cross-sectional area of the yoke through which the magnetic flux passes. After two MR valves, one is a conventional type valve and the other is the proposed one, are designed and fabricated, their performances are evaluated experimentally.

  • Magnetic Levitation System(MLS) levitates a steel ball to the desired position in the gravity field using electromagnetic force. MLS consists of light sensor to measure the position of steel ball and an electromagnet to control the position of the ball, that composes a feedback control system. This work does not use a steel ball with constant mass but variable mass steel balls as magnetic levitation targets. Differential equation of electric circuit for electromagnet and motion equation of the movement of steel ball are derived for modeling nonlinear system, that will be linearized at the nominal operating point. We propose a digital control that can levitate a steel ball of which weight is not known for ED-4810 system. Algorithm for estimating ball weight and feedback control are implemented in digital scheme under pentium PC equiped with A/D and D/A converter, ACL-8112, using C-language. Simulation and experimental results are given to show the usefulness of the proposed controller.

  • The education system in this paper is used to demonstrate and educate the effects of electromagnetic induction. Placing an aluminum ring over the core and switching on AC source causes the ring to jump in the air due to induced currents in the ring producing a magnetic field opposed to that produced in the core. To control the position of the ring by only the current, it is to require nonlinear control algorithm and control board that is composed of photo sensors, decode circuit, computer communication, and power electronics circuit. This paper provides the development for education system in detail and the effects of dynamic neural networks for nonlinear control with on line is studied.

  • The measurement of two-dimensional magnetic properties of electrical steel sheet using single sheet tester (SST) requires to control the B-waveform as sinusoidal. The SST electric circuit, in general, has inductance, and this makes the phase lag in electric current. For this reason, the induced voltages of H- or B-coil may have phase difference from the exciting voltage. In this paper, a new algorithm is developed to compensate the phase difference and makes the B-waveform control efficient. The developed algorithm experimentally calculates the phase difference based on the measured waveform of the induced voltage for the magnetic field intensity along transverse direction. By using the proposed algorithm, the two-dimensional magnetic properties of grain-orientated electrical steel sheet (30PG110) is measured up to 2T. By comparing the measured B- and H-waveforms, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is proven.

  • This paper proposed a transponder detection method to reduce recognition time in RFID system. It's also shown that conventional procedure of communication in the system could cause a waste of time when a reader recognizes a transponder. The reduction of recognition time can be obtained by developing a circuit to detect a transponder actively. Detecting a transponder is achieved by using the voltage variation of reader antenna voltage that happens when a transponder approaches to the vicinity of magnetic field formed by the reader. By adding a comparator to the antenna receiver of a reader, the reader can perceive approach or existence of a transponder. A reader for experiment is made using the MFRC500 by Phillips that supports ISO/IEC 14443 protocol. Comparing the proposed method with the conventional methods by experiment, there are 47.5ms reduction of recognition time maximally and 12ms in average.

  • Split magnetic fluid sealing is a combination of magnetic fluid rotary and plane sealing. Using the theory of equivalent magnetic circuit design as basis, the author theorized the pressure resistance performance of magnetic fluid plane sealing. To determine the pressure resistance of magnetic fluid plane sealing, the author adopted the method of finite element analysis to calculate the magnetic field intensity in the gap between plane sealing structures. The author also analyzed the effect of different sealing gaps, as well as different ratios between the sealing gap and tooth and solt width, on the sealing performance of split magnetic fluid. Results showed that the wider the sealing gap, the lower the sealing performance. Tooth width strongly affects sealing performance; the sealing performance is best when the ratio between tooth width and sealing gap is 2, whereas the sealing performance is poor when the ratio is over 8. The sealing performance is best when the ratio between the solt width and sealing gap is 4, indicating a slight effect on sealing performance when the ratio between the solt width and sealing gap is higher. Theoretical analysis and simulation results provide reference for the performance evaluation of different sealing equipment and estimation of critical pressure at interface failure.
