  • A method for damage detection in a plate structure is presented based on strain waves that are generated by impact or damage in the structure. Strain responses from continuous sensors, which are long ribbon-like sensors made from piezoceramic fibers or other materials, were used with a neural network technique to estimate the damage location. The continuous sensor uses only a small number of channels of data acquisition and can cover large areas of the structure. A grid type structural neural system composed of the continuous sensors was developed for effective damage localization in a plate structure. The ratios of maximum strains and arrival times of the maximum strains obtained from the continuous sensors were used as input data to a neural network. Simulated damage localizations on a plate were carried out and the identified damage locations agreed reasonably well with the exact damage locations.

  • To diagnose a patient's blood vessel disease, apoplexy, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, the blood velocity is very important. Determining the blood velocity methods using ultrasound are Continuous Doppler System and Pulse Doppler System. In using the Pulse Doppler System, we can obtain the position of blood velocity. But it is more complex hardware than Continuous Doppler System and it has low SNR(signal-noise ratio). So in this study, to obtain a believable information we use the Continuous Pulse Doppler System. Thus system have analog part and digital part. In analog part is composed of ultrasound generating part, the amplifying part to amplify the received signal from ultrasound sensor, the demodulation part to detect blood velocity and the filtering part to remove the noise. In digital part is composed of the A/D conversion part, digital signal processing part, and the communication part to communicate the PC. In this study to implement efficient ultrasound blood velocity measurement system, we can get the patient's blood velocity information in realtime. Thus, It is a useful in the accurate diagnosis with C.T(computered tomography), M.R.I(magnetic resonance imaging).

  • The purpose of this study was to optimize the conditions of continuous mixed culture of C.butyricum and R. spaeroides K-7, which were able to produce hydrogen using biomass-dreived substrate. To investigate the possibility of continuous culture, semi-continuous culture was carried out for 20 days. In semi-continuous culture using the reactor system, the replacement rate of fresh medium was 30% of total medium volume for the highest hydrogen evolution. In continuous culture, the optimum dilution rate was determined to be 0.05$h^{-1}$. The continuous culture produced 3.1 times as compared with the hydrogen on batch culture. On the other hand, the continuous mixed culture produced 1.3~2.1 times as much as hydrogen of the continuous monoculture of C. butyricum. When 10g of glucose in the media (1l) was supplied as a carbon source on continuous culture, mixed culture of C. butyricum and R. sphaeroides K-7 increased hydrogen evolution rate. Because considerable amount of glutamate was contained in waste water of glutamate fermentation, utilization of glutamate was examined in mixed culture. As a result of examination, production of hydorgen was slightly inhibited by high concentration of glutamate, more than 20mM, on continuous monoculture of R. sphaeroides K-7. On the other hand, both on continuous monoculture of C. butyricum and on mixed culture of C. butyricum and R. sphaeroides K-7, production of hydrogen was not inhibited by high concentration of glutamate such as 100mM. Hence this suggests that high concentration of waste water can be used as good substrate for hydrogen production on monoculture of C. butyricum and mixed culture of C. butyricum and R. sphaeroides K-7.

  • In this paper, we report on the development of a speaker independent continuous speech recognition system using continuous hidden Markov models. The continuous hidden Markov model consists of mean and covariance matrices and directly models speech signal parameters, therefore does not have quantization error. Filter bank coefficients with their 1st and 2nd-order derivatives are used as feature vectors to represent the dynamic features of speech signal. We use the segmental K-means algorithm as a training algorithm and triphone as a recognition unit to alleviate performance degradation due to coarticulation problems critical in continuous speech recognition. Also, we use the one-pass search algorithm that Is advantageous in speeding-up the recognition time. Experimental results show that the system attains the recognition accuracy of $83\%$ without grammar and $94\%$ with finite state networks in speaker-indepdent speech recognition.

  • Semi-active suspension systems are greatly expected to be in the mainstream of future controlled suspensions fur passenger cars. In this study, a continuous variable damper for a passenger car suspension is developed. It is controlled actively and exhibits high performance with light weight, low cost, and low energy consumption. To get fast response of the damper, reverse damping mechanism is adapted, and to get small pressure change rate after blow-off, a pilot controlled proportional valve is designed and analyzed. The reverse continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH damper which offers good body control with reduced transferred input force from tire, compared with any other type of suspension system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and compression damping force can be tuned independently, of which variable valve is placed externally. The rate of pressure change with respect to the flow rate after blow-offbecomes smooth when the fixed orifice size increases. Damping forces are measured with the change of the solenoid current at the different piston velocities to confirm the maximum hysteresis of 20N, linearity, and variance of damping farce. The damping farce variance is wide and continuous, and is controlled by the spoof opening, of which scheme is usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse continuous variable damper developed in this study is expected to be utilized in the semi-active suspension systems in passenger cars after its performance and simplicity of the design is confirmed through real car test.

  • The purpose of this study is to make an empirical analysis on the factors affecting the intention for the continuous use of the BSC system, which has been recently spread in the public sector. Because the object of acceptance is the performance management system based on BSC (Balanced Scorecard) implemented in the form of information systems, this study proposes a research model by applying TAM (Technology Acceptance Model). Independent variables are factors affecting the acceptance of BSC system such as training, communication, IS support, CEO support and personal innovativeness, and we examine their effects on the dependent variable, namely, intention on continuous use via mediating variables: perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. A questionnaire survey was conducted with public institutions(firms) that had introduced and were operating the BSC system; 264 valid questionnaires are adopted. Collected data are analyzed using SPSS 16.0 and AMOS 7.0. Results of reliability test show that all analyzed data are reliable. In validity test, one item regarding communication was excluded; 9 latent variables and 34 observed variables are used in the final analysis. Based on the results of the hypothesis test through path analysis using a structural equation model, 10 out of 16 hypotheses are accepted. Factors affecting perceived usefulness are training and IS(Information System) support. The analysis results indicate that perceived ease of use is mainly affected by IS support, CEO support, and personal innovativeness among the factors related to the acceptance of the BSC system. This suggests that, contrary to the expectation that the BSC system may be used without difficulty, the management's active support is required in order to attain expected improvement in productivity and work efficiency. This was also pointed out in case studies on the construction of the BSC system in public sectors. On the other hand, perceived ease of use is found to affect perceived usefulness. This supports the results of previous researches on TAM. Perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are found to affect the attitude towards the use of the system. The intention on continuous use is affected more by perceived usefulness than by the attitude towards the use of system. This result supports the results of previous researches on TAM, showing that the BSC system is utilized substantially in worksites. This study is considered meaningful in that it was actually performed on users at public institutions(firms) that had introduced the BSC system and that it empirically tested hypotheses on the acceptance of the BSC system by applying TAM to the research model.

  • In this paper, we propose a systematic method for intelligent digital redesign of a fuzzy-model-based controller for continuous-time nonlinear system which may also contain system uncertainties. The continuous-time uncertain TS fuzzy model is first contructed to represent the uncertain nonlinear system. A parallel distributed compensation(PDC) technique is then used to design a fuzzy-model-based controller for both stabilization. The designed continuous-time controller is then converted to an equivalent discrete-time controller by using a globally intelligent digital redesign method. This new technique is designed by a global matching of state variables between analog control system and digital control system. This new design technique provides a systematic and effective framework for integration of the fuzzy-model-based control theory and the advanced digital redesign technique for nonlinear systems with uncertainties. Finally, Chaotic Lorenz system is used as an illustrative example to show the effectiveness and the feasibility of the developed design method.

  • A graphic control language using function block diagram approach is designed and implemented, applicable to real-time control for continuous process automation system. The procedure implementing the control language is composed of three parts, editor, compiler, and executer. The editor generates the control algorithm file, which contains function block information in the text form, by menu-driven method on the color graphic screen. The compiler translates the contents of the control algorithm file to machine codes and their related data. Then, the executer generates a task that makes the machine codes executed at every sampling period in the target processor. The validity of the concept in its design and implementaion is assured by on-line simulation in the multi-function controller designed for continuous process automation.

  • Until now, the railway has been constructed using track with jointed rails of relatively short lengths to allow thermal expansion in hot summer months. These joints weaken the track structurally and increase track maintenance cost and power consumption of the running train. The CWR(Continuous Welded Rail) Track is the solution of these drawbacks. Although the CWR track not only reduces the track maintenance cost but also increases the life cycle of track components, the stability of the track is highly affected by change of temperatures and vehicle load. A three dimensional nonlinear analysis which considers rail, fastening system and tie has been performed to understand structural behavior of the CWR track. In this case, the translational and rotational stiffness values of fastening system have not been studied. The fastening system makes ties and rails connect. In this study, the stiffness values of various types of fastening systems which consist of clips, rail-pads and insulators are determined by the experiment. The experimental results of the fastening system are compared with the results of parametric study that is performed to investigate the sensitivity of fastening system on stability of CWR track.
