  • Recently, the continuous fiber materials has become more important materials to repair and to reinforce concrete structural members. Continuous fiber meshes are effective for shear and confining reinforcement and provide excellent durability when combined with high strength mortar The purpose of this study is to verify the relationship between concrete strength and the ductility of inner concrete confined laterally by continuous fiber meshes. For this study, Experimental studies were conducted by compressive members using the cast frame of high strength mortar and continuous fiber meshes. Therefore, the result shows that compressive strength and ductility has improved according to the amount of the fiber meshes, and that the lateral confined effect of members with 3- or 4-axis mesh arrangement is bigger than that of members with 2-axis mesh. These data have to be used to verify the characteristic of concrete structure members reinforced continuous fiber mesh.

  • During a compression molding of continuous fiber reinforced composites, the separation of matrix and fiber is caused by the flow of the molding process. As the characteristics of the products are greatly dependent on the separation, it is very important to clarify the separation in relation to molding condition, degree of needle punching number on the degree of nonhomogeneity are studied.

  • Continuous concrete beams are commonly used as structural members in the reinforced concrete constructions. The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars provide attractive solutions for these structures particularly for gaining corrosion resistance. This paper presents experimental results of eight two-span continuous concrete beams; two of them reinforced with pure glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and six of them reinforced with combinations of GFRP and steel bars. The continuous beams were tested under monotonically applied loading condition. The experimental load-deflection behavior and failure mode of the continuous beams were examined. In addition, the continuous beams were analyzed with a numerical method to predict the load-deflection curves and to compare them with the experimental results. Results show that there is a good agreement between the experimental and the theoretical load-deflection curves of continuous beams reinforced with pure GFRP bars and combinations of GFRP and steel bars.

  • This paper summarizes the processing inorganic continuous fibers from Korean minerals. Continuous filament fibers have been produced from two rocks, basalt and quartz diorite porphyry(QDP), by melting method. The essence of the method is that the vitrified materials was placed into the bushing, platinum/rhodium alloy crucible with a nozzle, and heated electrically to a temperature which allowed fiber spinning. Vitrified basalt without additive was suitable for producing continuous filament fiber. However doping quartz diorite porphyry with boric oxide yielded a material which could be pulled continuously.

  • Recently, fiber reinforced polymers(FRP) composite materials are used extensively in the rehabilitation of concrete structural members. A main application is to wrap beams and columns using the continuous fibers sheets to improve their strength and ductility. The corner chamfering affects significantly the performance of the continuous fibers sheets, and could lead to environmental problem with waste and dust. The main purpose of this paper is to verify the effect of corner conditions on the strength of the continuous fiber sheets, and to introduce new attached components which can avoid environmental problem. A total of 15 specimens were tested and carefully checked for three types of continuous fiber sheets(carbon, glass, and aramid) and three types of corner conditions(non-chamfering, chamfering, and device attaching). It is proved that the devices proposed in this research have some capabilities to use for RC member. But additional research will be needed for commercializing.

  • In this research, a representative volume element (RVE)-based FE Model is presented to estimate the mechanical properties of additively manufactured continuous fiber-reinforced composites with different fiber orientations. To construct the model, an ABAQUS Python script has been implemented to produce matrix and fiber in the desired orientations at the RVE. A script has also been developed to apply the periodic boundary conditions to the RVE. Experimental tests were conducted to validate the numerical models. Tensile specimens with the fiber directions aligned in the 0, 45, and 90 degrees to the loading direction were manufactured using a continuous fiber 3D printer and tensile tests were performed in the three directions. Tensile tests were also simulated using the RVE models. The predicted Young's moduli compared well with the measurements: the Young's modulus prediction accuracy values were 83.73, 97.70, and 92.92 percent for the specimens in the 0, 45, and 90 degrees, respectively. The proposed method with periodic boundary conditions precisely evaluated the elastic properties of additively manufactured continuous fiber-reinforced composites with complex microstructures.

  • As concrete structures are getting larger, higher, longer and more specialized, it is more required to develop steel fiber concrete and apply to the real world. In this research, it is aimed to have fatigue strength examined, varying the steel fiber content of 0%, 0.75%, 1.00%, 1.25% by experimental study of fatigue behavior of the steel fiber reinforced concrete continuous beams under cyclic loading. The ultimate load and initial load of flexural cracking were measured by static test. In addition, the load versus strain relation, load versus deflection relation, crack pattern and fracture mode by increasing weight were observed. On the other hand, the crack propagation and the modes of fracture according to cycle number and the relation of cyclic loading to deflection relation and strain relation were investigated by fatigue test. As the result of fatigue test, continuous beam without steel fiber was failed at 60 ~ 70% of The static ultimate strength and it could be concluded that fatigue strength to two million cyclic loading was arround 67.2% by S-N curve. On the other hand, that with steel fiber was failed at 65 ~ 85% of the static ultimate strength and it could be concluded fatigue strength to two million cyclic loading around 71.7%.

  • In spite of various advantages, steel fiber reinforced concrete is still limited in its use due to the insufficient research results on the structural performance and design criteria. This study evaluated the long-term behavior of the steel fiber reinforced concrete slabs by long-term loading experiments based on the short-term load bearing capacity of steel fiber reinforced concrete slabs obtained from previous studies. In this study, long-term loading experiments were carried out on Total four 2-span continuous slab specimens were tested for examining the long-term behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete members. Long-term behavior characteristics of members were evaluated by measuring the long-term deflection, drying shrinkage, the number and width of cracks. Experimental results showed that the instant deflection of the steel fiber reinforced concrete slab is about 50% of the normal reinforced concrete slab. And, it was analyzed that the long-term deflection of the specimen using steel fiber reinforced concrete was about 10~20% lower than that of normal concrete by the long-term deflection over 100 days. In addition, the slab specimen using steel fiber reinforced concrete was evaluated to have just 70% of the number and width of cracks compared with normal concrete specimens.

  • A technology using continuous fiber soil reinforcement system for the creation of ecological restoration in a damaged area has been developed and introduced. The continuous fiber soil reinforcement system (Geofiber system) is an environmentally friendly slope protection technique that continuous fiber soil reinforced layers are constructed with green plantation on cut slope. The characteristics of this system in terms of the strength and hydraulic performance, and the vegetation were investigated in this study. The main objectives of this comparative study was to quantify the potential contribution of geofiber system for the revegetation on the cut slope in a damaged area. A Geofiber system was constructed to reinforce the lower layer of slopes and revegetation methods including wood chips were carried out on the upper layer by machineries. The results of monitoring during 3 years on cut slopes were as follows : 1) All the quadrat existed in the proper range for vegetation. 2) Species richness was 4.4 (site-1) and 18.5 (site-2) respectively. 3) The averaged coverage rates of quadrats was 90%. It is remarkable that the continuous fiber soil reinforcement system would be capable of applying to a damaged area and also would serve maintaining a healthier environment for floras. However, it behooves to continue monitoring on succession of vegetation for ecological restoration.
