  • Following the emergence of a knowledge-based economy, the role of universities in regional development has been re-evaluated through considering localized interactive learning processes. This paper tries to identify the role of universities for regional development and the variables effecting on their localized engagement in regional development. We argues that universities cannot be viewed as a single angle, because the behaviors of a university are influenced by the degree of their independence from regional and national governments. Likewise, the contributions of universities to their regional development can be differential depending on the organizational characteristics of individual universities, the social, political, and economical contexts of a given region and nation, and complex relations between and within universities and other regional stakeholders. These variables can be both the drivers and barriers when each university responds to regional needs. Based on the literature review, we suggest that the explanatory factors of shaping the engagement of universities in regional development can be classified into four categories: the characteristics of individual universities, the national context, the local and regional context, and the policy context.

  • As strategies for creating profits are differentiated by the national economic system and development strategies related to firms' geographical scope, they depend on the spatial contexts and product characteristics. In this perspective, strategies for the profit creation of Korean textile and clothing FDI firms invested in Vietnam has involved in the geographical differentiations in accordance with the development path of transitional economies, changes in institutional environments and the characteristics of products. Therefore. the main purpose of this research is to identify the way in which they have their own identity in transitional economies by investigating business pattern, commodity chain and extra-firm relations, which are related to institutional dynamics in Vietnam. There are two main characteristics of Korean textile and clothing FDI firms in Vietnam. The first is that all business activities involved in the commodity chain of them from R&D to production is controlled by global retailer and distributors, which is the buyer-driven commodity chain and the typical commodity chain of the textile and clothing industry. The second could be defined as over- or unforced embeddedness into the institutional legacy of the Soviet system, because they have been incorporated into pre-existing networks based on reciprocal relations in Vietnam.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the science history materials presented in middle school 'Science' textbook according to the 2015 revised curriculum. The subjects of this study were 14 middle school 'Science' textbooks. The analysis used the three-dimensional framework. The results of analysis show that the number of science history materials presented in textbooks tends to increase as the grade goes up. It was also found that science history materials were presented in a specific unit for each grade. The three-dimensional analysis of science history materials showed that conceptual-fundamental-discovery/device types were most commonly presented in all grades. At the instruction context level, the conceptual context was the most common, and the basic role was the main at the role level. The discovery/device type was the most common type of presentation. The results of the study show that the science history materials presented in science textbooks were concentrated in some areas. Also, the instruction context and role were concentrated in some factors in terms. This suggests that various science history materials need to be developed in the future. It is also necessary to explore concrete methods to ensure that science history materials presented in textbooks can be used in various roles in different contexts.

  • Recently, concepts of multicultural society and/or multiculturalism have been not only widely discussed across several disciplines, but also actively promoted in government's policy, as the in-flow of foreign immigrants has increased rapidly. This paper suggests the term 'multicultural space' instead of multicultural society in a sense that both international migration of immigrants and their accommodation to a certain locality presuppose a spatial dimension. This paper also points out that the term multiculturalsim should be used very carefully, because this term includes a normative character implied in a sense of recognition of ethnic and cultural diversity and difference on the one hand, and an ideological one reflected on strategic policies of capital and the state on the other. On the basis of recognition of these problems, this paper tries to reformulate spatially the concept of muticultural society which has been supposed to be constructed due to rapidly increasing foreign immigrants, emphasizing some usefulness of multi-scalar approach. It then analyzes economic and political contexts of transnational migration, providing a criticism of multiculturalism as an ideological logic of capital and the state in transnational captialism. Finally it put a stress upon importance of struggle for spaces of recognition as a new glocal ethics in the age of post-globalization.

  • To understand the structure and dynamics of different forms of learning, whether incidental or conscious, we have to study them as parts or aspects of concrete historical activities with specifiable contexts. This realization is more embodied in apprenticeship learning situations of the student teachers. In this perspective, this paper aims to understand the student teachers' experience on geography teaching as a participant observer in the secondary schools. The 9 student teachers during the teaching internship have written their 38 journals, which was quality analysed to find out key concepts for the purpose of this research. Major conclusions are suggested below as follows. First, the most student teachers were experienced in geography teaching in the secondary schools through the 2-weeks practice teaching. Second, in the positive perspective, student teachers observed on that teachers would teaching well interact with student and experienced teachers would settle down to student's studies. Third, in the negative perspective, student teachers observed on that teachers lecture with only text, and cooperative learning by student presentation in the geography class. Finally, In third person perspective, there is no students' or teachers' productive questions in the whole-class conversation. In addition to that the most mentor teachers lecture do all of the talking in class. In effect these student teachers' experiences, especially 'reality of the geography teaching' and 'practical knowledge of the novice mentor teachers or experienced mentor teachers', either reinforce or modify understanding about the geography teaching practices.

  • The goals of this study are basically to analyze the lectures related to mathematics education in national universities of education and in education training institutes, and ultimately to suggest the collaboration in the lectures related to mathematics education in national universities of education and education training institutes. In order to achieve the above goals, five universities were selected. Summing up these results, we suggest several ways to collaborate the mathematics education lectures in national universities of education and education training institutes. First, the training education in the national university of education has to offer more lectures which deal with the theory related with mathematical education and the fundamental area of mathematics. In addition to this, teaching in contents in terms of the area has to focus on the background knowledge related to the teaching contents. Second, based on the training education, the assigned education training institute has to reflect the periodical and social condition. In addition to this, it has to reflect the real condition around the school environment. With those efforts it has to make new kinds of lectures which concentrate on the recent trend or the understanding of the theory related with mathematical education. In this case, both obligatory and elective courses have to be offered. Third, the education training institute responsible for the staff development program has to open lectures with the contexts of real time teaching activities based on the experiences of the teachers. In this case, one or two particular subjects have to be dealt with in depth and lecturers have to be selected who are suitable for the lectures.

  • Even though measurement is an important strand of elementary mathematics education, there has been lack of research in this field. This study analyzed topics related to length and time in a series of mathematics textbooks aligned to 2007 or 2009 revised mathematics curriculum. The analysis was focused on three aspects: (a) overall instructional components of measurement, (b) instructional components specific to the topics of measurement, and (c) key competencies in mathematics. The results of this study showed that many topics dealing with length and time were represented with relation to real-life contexts or other subjects. The meanings of measurement terms and the necessity of calculation were well explained but other aspects still had room for improvement when it comes to the necessity of measurement units, appropriate choice of units, and use of students' common misconceptions. Another noticeable result was that problem solving, communication, and reasoning among key competencies in mathematics have been emphasized in the mathematics textbooks. Based on these results, this study provides textbook writers with implications on what to further consider in dealing with length and time.

  • The austere standard for industrial design and the machine aesthetic reinforced modernism and lasted more than a half century. Pop art and Pop design movements, which were opposite of the elite culture, began to appear as anti-modernism in the late 1950s. With the development of technology, the movements helped to establish humanism design style that reflected the life style of young generation and their culture. From the 1960s. it was a try in order to fulfill psychologically users' needs beyond tasks for physical considerations. The efforts appeared as a various appearance in different contexts. It could settle down on industrial design, based on humanism both from the physical and psychological points ol views, through anti-modernism in the 1960s, commercialism, consumerism and hi-tech in the 1970s, and postmodernism in the 1980s. The design, as a specific style in industrial design, delivers both physical and psychological satisfaction to consumers by using a mixture of human emotions with high technology. Accordingly, this study is to find out and to define the design style that was applied by human emotion and sensibility in design history from the 1960s to the 1980s. It will be underpinnings for the next research about how the design style has developed nowadays.

  • Decline of pine forests happens in Korea due to various disturbances such as insect pests, forest fires and extreme climate, which may further continue with ongoing climate change. For conserving and reestablishing pine forests, understanding climate-induced future shifts of pine tree distribution is a critical concern. This study predicts future geographical distribution of Pinus densiflora, using Maximum Entropy Model (MaxEnt). Input data of the model are locations of pine tree stands and their environmental variables such as climate were prepared for the model inputs. Alternative future projections for P. densiflora distribution were conducted with RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 climate change scenarios. As results, the future distribution of P. densiflora steadily decreased under both scenarios. In the case of RCP 8.5, the areal reductions amounted to 11.1% and 18.7% in 2050s and 2070s, respectively. In 2070s, P. densiflora mainly remained in Kangwon and Gyeongsang Provinces. Changes in temperature seasonality and warming winter temperature contributed primarily for the decline of P. densiflora., in which altitude also exerted a critical role in determining its future distribution geographic vulnerability. The results of this study highlighted the temporal and spatial contexts of P. densiflora decline in Korea that provides useful ecological information for developing sound management practices of pine forests.

  • The sensor networks can be used attractively for various application areas. Time synchronization is important for any Ubiquitous Sensor Networks (USN) systems. USN makes extensive use of synchronized time in many contexts for data fusion. However existing time synchronization protocols are available only for homogeneous sensor nodes of USN. It needs to be extended or redesigned in order to apply to the USN with heterogeneous sensor nodes. Because heterogeneous sensor nodes have different clock sources with the SinkNode of USN, it is impossible to be synchronized global time. In addition, energy efficiency is one of the most significant factors to influence the design of sensor networks, as sensor nodes are limited in power, computational capacity, and memory. In this paper, we propose specific time synchronization based on master-slave topology for the global time synchronization of USN with heterogeneous sensor nodes. The time synchronization master nodes are always able to be synchronized with the SinkNode. Then time synchronization master nodes enable time synchronization slave nodes to be synchronized sleep periods. The proposed master-slave time synchronization for heterogeneous sensor nodes of USN is also helpful for power saving by maintaining maximum sleep time.
