The flow of sewage has been studied for hundreds of years. Reducing drag in pipes can allow sewer to be removed easily and quickly. Drag reduction is not only a macroscale issue. Physical and chemical properties of the nano-scale can affect flow at the macroscopic scale. In this paper the predictability of hydrophobicity at the nano-scale is studied. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to calculate the range of contact angles of water droplets in equilibrium on a pillared graphite surface. It was found that at a pillar height of two graphite layers there was the largest range of contact angles. It is observed that at this height the droplet begins to transition from the Wenzel state to the Cassie-Baxter state. Surfaces with larger pillar heights have much larger contact angles corresponding to a more hydrophobic surface. Silicon dioxide was also simulated in the water droplet. The contaminant slight decreased the contact angle of the water droplet.
Wetlands are generally thought to be among the most fertile and productive ecosystems of the world. They provide a variety of ecological functions to the landscape. In recent years there has been considerable research activity to generate more scientific documentation on the ecological functions of wetlands. Many pollutants released to the environment settle and accumulate in the silt and mud called sediment on the bottoms of wetlands. Contaminated sediment can cause adverse effects to aquatic organism and eventually to ecological system. Sediment toxicity test with water fleas has been done by standardized preparation method of pore and elutriate water methods described in the literature for the need to protect Woopo wetlands. The results of Daphnia magna, Ceridaphnia dubla and Simocephalus sp. toxicity test were compared and discussed in terms of the relative sensitivity and discrimination abilities with both pore and elutriate water obtained from the sediments of Woopo wetlands.
Levels of arsenic in stream and reservoir waters affected by an abandoned gold mine were examined. The abandoned mine has been left without proper civil and remedial works preventing potential environmental hazards. Field and laboratory chemical analyses revealed that the stream waters downgradient from the mine area were severely contaminated with arsenic and furthermore the reservoir water, 2-3 km away from the mine, also contained substantial levels of As, far exceeding the Korean stream water standard. Relatively higher pH values (6.5-9.4) enhanced mobility of As and mainly sustained substantial As concentration in waters. Chemistries of the stream water, groundwater and reservoir water were dominated by two main factors including effects of mine effluent and anthropogenic agricultural activities. Considering that there has been a substantial As input to the reservoir and the reservoir water has been used for agricultural and domestic uses, immediate remedial works are essentially required.
According to the population increase and industrialization, the drinking water source, Han River and other sources, are contaminated by industrial wastewater, domestic sewage, and agricultural discharges. Among the contaminants, and toxic substances, pesticides is most interesting items (or human health Our drinking water has some problems of THMs, Fe, odor, etc., $o many people use groundwater or bottled water. But sometimes there are many reports about groundwater contamination owing to the agricultural chemicals, waste disposal, industrial wastewater. In America, there are about 45,000 groundwave supply company and in korea about 20% of total population are using groundwave as drinking water source. In America, studies about SEE is increasing Instead of liquid- liquid extraction method, because of many advantages of SEE methods. Author tried to investigate SPE methods in the spiked water samples to compare with liquid- liquid extraction method and got the following results. The amount of organic solvents which are used In SPE method is less than 1/10 compared with liquid- liquid method, the analytical duration time is shortened, and the ethyl acetate was good fluent among several organic solvents.

Laboratory scale experiments on in-situ ozonation were carried out to delineate the effects of liquid phases, such as soil water and nonaqeous phase liquid (NAPL) on the transport of gaseous ozone in unsaturated soil. Soil water enhanced the transport of ozone due to water film effect, which prevent direct reaction between soil particles and gaseous ozone, and increased water content reduced the breakthrough time of ozone because of increased average linear velocity of ozone and decreased air-water interface area. Diesel fuel as NAPL also played a similar role with water film, so the breakthrough time of ozone in diesel-contaminated soil was significantly reduced compared with uncontaminated soil. However, ozone breakthrough time was retarded with increased diesel concentration, because of high reactivity of diesel fuel with ozone. In multiphase liquid system of unsaturated soil, the ozone transport was mainly Influenced by nonwetting fluid, diesel fuel in this study.
In order to effectively manage the reservoir, reservoir water quality management should be based on physicochemical and configurational characteristics. In this research, correlation between factors affecting the reservoir water quality was examined. Chl-a and COD shows the highest positive correlation. Chl-a and T-P also has a high positive correlation, however Chl-a and T-N show lower correlation relatively. Even though T-N is an important factor for phytoplankton growth which increase Chl-a concentration, corelation of Ch1-a and T-N shows that enough nitrogen in the reservoir isn't no longer limiting factor. The age of reservoir can cause of increasing COD and SS. Embankment height and elevation of reservoirs shows strong negative correlation to water quality. That means reservoir which is higher embankment height and locate in higher elevations is less contaminated. Regression expression was derived with Chl-a and water quality parameters, and height of reservoir. Finally Chl-a was simulated using regression expression and it was a good approach to predict the Chl-a concentration.
Recently water demand is increasing as the industry prospers. The increase of water demand is followed by the increase of wastewater discharge which pollutes rivers and ground water extensively. These rivers, reservoirs and ground water are sources for drinking water and their contamination affects the quality of water supply and other potable water. In Korea there are 776 water treatment plants which supply drinking water from main rivers or reservoirs. Rivers are the biggest water source for drinking water is being contaminated, the innovation of treatment process is needed. The construction and operation of water supply facilities is under the control of the Ministry of Construction and the water supply offices of cities and provinces. However, drinking water quality is under the control of the bureau of sanitation in the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. There are 33 items in drinking water quality standards of Korea. Trihalomethanes, Selenium, Diazinone and other three of pesticides have been included lately, The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs is planning to enhance. the level of $VOC_S$(Vola-tile Organic Compounds) standard. Drinking water quality standard is the goal to protect the quality of supply water and ground water. In order to protect the source water from domestic or industrial water, technological improvement and adequate investment should be urgently made. The ultimate goal of drinking water quality is safety and health of consumers. The more stringent the standard are, the better the water quality will be. As the drinking water quality standards become more stringent this year, various and positive solutions by the authorities concerned must be prepared.
Anthropogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are formed by the incomplete combustion of fuels and industrial waste. PAHs can be widely exposed to the environment (water, soil and groundwater). PAHs are potentially toxic, mutagenic and/or carcinogenic. Fundamental studies such as biota uptake (e.g., earthworm and plant) of PAHs are highly needed. It is necessary to develop alternative ways to evaluate bioavailability of PAHs instead of using living organisms because it is time-consuming, difficult to apply in the field, and also exaction method is tedious and time-consuming. In this study, sorption behaviors of phenanthrene were evaluated to predict the fate of PAHs in soils. Moreover, bioaccumulation of PAHs in an artificially contaminated soil was evaluated using pea plant (Pisum sativum) as a bioindicator. A novel passive sampler, organic-diffusive gradient in thin-film (o-DGT) for PAHs was newly synthesized, tested as a biomimic surrogate and compared with plant accumulation. Sorption partitioning coefficient (KP) and sorption capacity (KF) were in the order of natural soil > loess corresponding to the increase in organic carbon content (foc). Biota-to-soil accumulation factor (BSAF) and DGT-to-soil accumulation factor (DSAF) were evaluated. o-DGT uptake was linearly correlated with pea plant uptake of phenanthrene in contaminated soil (R2=0.863). The Tenax TA based o-DGT as a biomimic surrogate can be used for the prediction of pea plant uptake of phenanthrene in contaminated soil.

Currently, the pursuit of industrialization for rapid economic growth has led to serious environmental damage and related problems because of comtamination with chemicals. Over time, this contaminaion is getting worse and worse. Most developing countries have tried to pursue their economic development and growth, however without preparation for the control and disposal of hazardous wastes. Permitting hazardous waste to be abandoned and disposed in appropriately causes soil pollution, groundwater contamination, and surface water contamination, which are all extremely serious. In particular, when hazardous wastes which include toxic chemicals are distributed around the living environment even in small amounts, concentration can occur in the food chain through ecological systems, which can therefore affect human. Chromium(VI) has contaminated soil in China. We experimented to test the immobilization, chemical reduction, and soil washing methods in order to make our experiment efficient in the purification of soil contaminated with Chromium(VI), and to prove the theoretical models by experiments testing the field applications. The field experiment showed that result of experiment satisfied with the standards of China. The result of multi-stage continuous remediation reduce the Chromium(VI) concentration to 11.95 mg/kg and 14.83 mg/kg that were equivalent to 98% and 97% removal rates. This result implied we could apply multi-stage process of Chromium(VI) contaminated soil to meet the regulatory limit of Chromium(VI).

A large amount of radioactively-contaminated gravel can be produced on the demolition/restoration of facilities related the back end of fuel cycle. However, because of the lacking in basic knowledge for decontamination of radioactive-contami-nated gravel, this study has performed the basic tests using for soil-washing. To find effective decontamination condition, several experiments were carried out for the selection of optimal decontamination agents. Washing by 0.1 M nitric acid was proved to be more effective than that by distilled water or surfactant for decontamination of uranium-contaminated gravel. In addition, crushing/grinding of uranium-contaminated gravel prior to washing was contributed to increase in of removal efficiency of uranium and reduction of decontamination time. The smaller the sizes of crushed gravel was, the more the removal efficiency increased. Also, small the sized particles improved chances for meeting the clearance requirement of the treated gravel.
