This paper reports on the development of a new foot for a quadrupedal jointed-leg type walking robot. The foot has 2 toes, one at the front and the other at the rear side, for stable landing on uneven ground by point contact. The toes can move up and down independantly, guided by double-wishbone shaped parallel links which enable the lower leg to rotate with respect to a remote center on the ground surface. The motion of each toe is damped by a hydropneumatic shock absorber integrated in the foot in order to absorb the dynamic landing shock. Furthermore, the new foot can reduce the maximum hip joint drive torque by shortening the moment arm length between the hip joint and the landing force vector on the ground. Intensive experiments were carried out in this study by using a one-leg walking model to investigate the soft landing performance of the foot which could be hardly offered by conventional robot feet such as a flat plate with a gimbal type ankle joint. And it was confirmed that the hip joint torque of the leg walking on the flat surface could be reduced remarkably by using the new foot.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare three dimensional displacement and peak velocity of the center of mass (COM) during obstacle crossing in young and older adults. METHODS: 10 young adults (6 males/4 females, $24.6{\pm}1.9$ years, age range: 22.0-26.9) and 10 older adults (1 male/9 females, $76.9{\pm}5.1$ years, age range: 65.2-81.2) participated in the study. Both groups crossed an obstacle, which is 10% of leg length, and COM was measured using motion analysis system. Independent t-test was used to find significant differences between two groups. RESULTS: The older adults showed significantly greater and faster COM displacement and peak velocity in mediolateral (M-L) direction as compared with young adults (p<.01 and p<.001 respectively). However, the young adults showed significantly greater and faster COM displacement and peak velocity in anteroposterior (A-P) direction as compared with older adults (p<.05 and p<.001 respectively). Furthermore, the young adults showed faster peak velocity of COM in vertical direction as compared with older adults (p<.001). However, no significant difference was found in the COM displacement in vertical direction between two groups. CONCLUSION: Greater and faster COM displacement and peak velocity in M-L direction in older adults were due to compensatory adjustment for appropriate contact on base of support of swing limb. Thus, the motion of the COM in M-L direction may be a crucial factor to identify risk of falls in older adults.

The lateral behavior of the moving web is critical to the quality of the web products. The alignment of the rollers carrying the web is found to be one of important factors to the lateral behavior of the moving web. But, the study on the effect of the tilting roller in the direction of the normal to the moving web on the lateral behavior has not been reported in the literature yet. For example, the contact roller often contacts the winding roll in a tilted fashion and causes the lateral motion of the winding web, which induces the offset on the wound roll. The lateral dynamics of the moving web induced by a tilted roller in normal direction of a web is investigated in this paper. The two-dimensional dynamic model developed by Shelton is extended to investigate the effect of a titled roller in a normal direction of the moving web on the lateral motion of the moving web. New boundary conditions are developed to solve the extended model. Computer simulation study proved that the model developed can be used to predict the lateral motion of the moving web ? to a tilted roller in normal direction of the moving web. The lateral deflection is increased exponentially a the tilting angle is increased. As the length of web span is increased, the amount of lateral deflection was increased almost linearly for the same tilting angle. The lateral dynamics turned out to be almost independent to the operating tension. The model developed can be used to solve the offset problem of the staggered winding and also to design a new web guiding mechanism.
Phenomenon of direct contact condensation (DCC) heat transfer between steam and water is characterized by the transport of heat and mass through a moving steam/water interface. Since the DCC heat transfer provides some advantageous features in the viewpoint of enhanced heat transfer, it is widely applied to the diversified industries. This study proposes a simple condensation model on the stable steam jets discharging into a quenching tank with subcooled water from a single horizontal pipe for the prediction of the steam jet shapes. The model was derived from the mass, momentum and energy equations as well as thermal balance equation with condensing characteristics at the steam/water interface for the axi-symmetric coordinates. The extremely large heat transfer rate at the steam/water interface was reflected in the effective thermal conductivity estimated from the previous experimental results. The results were compared with the experimental ones. The predicted steam jet shape(i. e. radius and length) by the model was increasing as the steam mass flux and the pool temperature were increasing, which was similar to the trend observed in the experiment.
As a follow-up of a study on design strategies to improve Korea's Korean coast guarduniforms, this study set out to propose Korean coast guard uniforms of a new concept that would meet the changing needs of the times and match the advanced technology and work environments. Three concepts of classical, nautical and techno chic were identified from the design strategies of the previous study. Using the results from a prototype show and preference survey, the investigator divided items into design, color, material, and detail and reflects demands for each of them. As a result, design was examined in four aspects of identity, acknowledgement, unity, and practicality and focused its improvement factors on design differentiated from other organizations' uniforms including ground police, segmentation of size system, adjustment of the length of upper garment to consider activity, and changes to the lines and silhouette to give out a modern image. As for color, the focus was placed on differentiated colors from other organizations' uniforms including ground police through dark blue and ocean color, change toward colors that reflect environmental characteristics, and unity in colors between the summer and winter uniform. As for material, the focus of improvement was put on elasticity, resistance against contamination, warmth retention, texture, wearing sensation, and functionality by taking into account convenience for field workers on coast guard vessels and branch offices who have much time in contact with ocean environments in order to make the materials high-grade. As for detail, structural details were added to give out a modern image such as changing the detail lines, efficiency of storage space, buttons, sleeve hems, ironing lines, and neck collars by taking into account environmental characteristics. The significance of the study lies in that it proposed a development model for large-scale uniform copy design by establishing copy design that secures functionality and is proper for an organization's social and cultural environment.

In the present study, crack initiation criteria, static failure and tensile mode fatigue behavior for a rail steel are evaluated to assure the railway vehicle's safety. The transverse fissure, which is the most critical damage in the rail, is initiated by the maximum shear stress and its location is subsurface. In addition, the possibility of transition from the shear mode to the mixed mode increases with increasing the length of subsurface crack. Because of the brittleness by the welding, the fracture toughness of the welded part is lower than of the base metal. For low ${\Delta}K$, the stage II fatigue crack growth rates of the welded part is slower than of the base metal but, for high ${\Delta}K$, this different behavior for fatigue crack growth rate is nearly diminished. These trends are more remarkable for low stress ratio, R=0.1. It is believed that this behavior is caused by the change of the microstructure which that of the welded part is coarser than of base metal.
For successful embryo implantation, the communication of the maternal endometrium with the conceptus trophectoderm is required essentially. In pigs, conceptuses undergo morphological change in length to enlarge the physical contact area with the maternal endometrium and secrete estrogen to induce the maternal recognition of pregnancy during the peri-implantation period. Conceptus-derived estrogen prevents luteolysis by conversion in direction of $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ secretion from the uterine vasculature to the uterine lumen as well as it affects on expression of the uterine endometrial genes. In addition to estrogen, conceptuses release various signaling molecules, including cytokines, growth factors, and proteases, and, in response to these signaling molecules, the maternal uterine endometrium also synthesizes many signaling molecules, including hormones, cytokines, growth factors, lipid molecules, and utilizes ions such as calcium ion by calcium regulatory molecules. These reciprocal interactions of the conceptus trophectoderm with the maternal uterine endometrium make development and successful implantation of embryos possible. Thus, signaling molecules at the maternal-conceptus interface may play an important role in the implantation process. This review summarized syntheses and functions of signaling molecules at the maternal-conceptus interface to further understand mechanisms of the embryo implantation process in pigs.
The relationship of cartilage canals to initial osteogenesis of primary ossification center of developing vertebrae in human fetuses ranging from 50mm to 260mm in crown rump length was studied by light and electron microscopy. The cartiage canals of the thoracic vertebrae were first observed at 60mm fetus. Cartilage canals were identified as vascular channels arising from perichondrium surfaces. A number of cartilage canals were observed around the primary center of ossification at 80mm fetus. At 120mm fetus, cartilage canals of the bodies of vertebra were increased. Eventually the canals were eroded from the main medullary cavity and remained at only peripheral regions of growth cartilage. Superficial, intermediate, and deep canals were identified by the characteristics of cartilage cells. Fibroblasts, undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, and vacuolated macrophages were observed adjacent to the matrix of resting cartilage cells in the superficial canal. Fibroblasts and mesenchymal cells were densely packed at the tip of canal, giving an epithelial appearance to the clustered cell in the intermediate canal. Vacuolated macrophages were in contact with matrix of hypertrophied cartilage. The thick-walled vessels in the intermediate and deep canals consisted of typical endothelial cells, but in the newly formed vessels contained mesenchymal cells and fibroblasts incorporated into the vessel wall. During lengthening of cartilage canal, the matrix of cartilage cells were invaded by newly formed capillaries and vacuolated macrophages. At the deep canal, the lateral wall of the canal terminated in matrix containing calcified cartilage. The mesenchymal cells began to differentiate into osteoblasts adjacent to the calcified matrix. The results indicate that the connective tissue cells within the cartilage canals proliferate and differentiate into osteoblasts at the site of primary ossification center.
The development of the superior cervical ganglion was studied by electron microscopic method in human fetuses ranging from 40 mm to 260 mm of crown-rump length(10 to 30 weeks of gestational age). At 40 mm fetus, the superior cervical ganglion was composed of clusters of undifferentiated cell, primitive neuroblast, primitive supporting cell, and unmyelinated fibers. At 70 mm fetus, the neuroblasts and their processes were ensheated by the bodies or processes of satellite cells. The cytoplasm of the neuroblast contained rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, Golgi complex, Nissl bodies and dense-cored vesicles. As the neuroblasts grew and differentiated dense-cored vesicles moved away from perikaryal cytoplasm into developing processes. Synaptic contacts between the cholinergic axon and dendrites of postganglionic neuron and a few axosomatic synapses were first observed at 70 mm fetus. At 90 mm fetus the superior cervical ganglion consisted of neuroblasts, satellite cells, granule-containing cells, and unmyelinated nerve fibers. The ganglion cells increased somewhat in numbers and size by 150 mm fetus. Further differentiation resulted in the formation of young ganglion cells, whose cytoplasm was densely filled with cell organelles. During next prenatal stage up to 260 mm fetus, the cytoplasm of the ganglion cells contained except for large pigment granules, all intracytoplasmic structures which were also found in mature superior cervical ganglion. A great number of synaptic contact zones between the cholinergic preganglionic axon and the dendrites of the postganglionic neuron were observed and a few axosomatic synapses were also observed. Two morphological types of the granule-containing cells in the superior cervical ganglion were first identified at 90 mm fetus. Type I granule-containing cell occurred in solitary, whereas type II tended to appeared in clusters near the blood capillaries. Synaptic contacts were first found on the solitary granule-containing cell at 150 mm fetus. Synaptic contacts between the soma of type I granule-containing cells and preganglionic axon termials were observed. In addition, synaptic junctions between the processes of the granule-containing cells and dendrites of postganglionic neuron were also observed from 150 mm fetus onward. In conclusion, superior cervical ganglion cells and granule-containing cells arise from a common undifferentiated cell precursor of neural crest. The granule-containg cells exhibit a local modulatory feedback system in the superior cervical ganglion and may serve as interneurons between the preganglionic and postganglionic cells.

The model was developed by applying the principles of Bacot and Vidal to measure the behavior of deformation of the reinforced earth wall, and various tasts were performed by using the plastic fabric filter and the galvanized steel plate as a strip. The results obtained are as follows; 1. When the reinforced earth wall is deformed by the load, the strip is completely reinforced by the backfill materials and changed to the rigid block state, under the state of failure which permits sliding only, the next theoretical equation is formed. (H/L) . tan$\theta$ [cosO-sinOtanO] =2sinO[tan($\theta$ +0) +tanO] 2.The degree of the mutual reinforcement of the backfill material and the strip depend on the physical characteristics of the each material especially the angle of shearing resistance of the backfill material is desirable over 20$^{\circ}$ and, if it is over 400, its function could be a maximum. 3.The distribution of the maximum tensile strain of the reinforcement is changing with the height of reinforced earth wall, and when the height from bottom of the reinforced earth wall is 1.85 to 3. 35m, the maximum tensile strain appears at 2m from the skin element. The maximum tensile strain is increased by the depth of the reinforced earth wall from surface, and increased with the lapse of time after construction. 4.The failure surface of the reinforced earth wall by the concrete skin was about 60$^{\circ}$and the failure behavior of the reinforced earth wall in which the fabric filter was buried was slow, and so the pore pressure could be decreased. 5.It is possible to construct the fabric retained earth wall by the plastic fabric filter only. And the reinforcing effect between the steel plate and the plastic fabric filter is not largely different. however, in the aspect of the economic durability, the plastic fabric filter is more advantageous. 6.The reinforcing action mainly depends on the width and the length of the reinforcing materials, if possible, the full width is advantageous to enlarge the contact area with backfill. but considering the economic aspect, it is neccessary to develop the method controlling the space of the strip.
