Objective: The genes Bcl-2 and Bax play important roles in apoptosis. Many studies have shown that formalin has a strong deleterious effect on male fertility and can induce apoptosis. L-carnitine has been reported to potentially reverse the negative effects of formalin, leading to improved spermatogenesis. In this study, we examined the levels of expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in mice treated with formalin and L-carnitine. Methods: Thirty adult BALB/c mice were categorized into three groups. The mice in the control group (n = 10) were not injected with any substance. The mice in the second group (n = 10) received 10 mg/kg of formalin daily via an intraperitoneal injection, while those in the final group (n = 10) were intraperitoneally injected daily with a dose of 10 mg/kg of formalin and 100 mg/kg of L-carnitine. All mice were kept in isolated cages for 31 days. Results: The expression of Bax was significantly higher in the formalin-treated mice than in the mice of the control group, while the expression of Bcl-2 was significantly lower in the formalin-treated mice than in the control mice. Additionally, relative to control mice, Bcl-2 expression increased and Bax expression decreased in the mice administered both formalin and L-carnitine. Conclusion: In this study, L-carnitine was shown to augment Bcl-2 expression and to reduce Bax expression, indicating that this compound may inhibit apoptosis. Due to its positive effects, L-carnitine can be used as a prophylactic treatment for people who routinely come into direct contact with formalin as an occupational hazard.
A new method to extract gold from pyrite roster cinder, which combines ultra-fine-grinding with resin-in-pulp, has been studied in this paper. Compared with traditional leaching technology, it can short leaching time, avoid complex filter process, lower sodium cyanide consumption and increase gold recovery by 35%. During leaching, aluminium oxide ball was used as stirred medium, hydrogen peroxide as leaching aid and sodium hexametaphosphate as grinding aid. With the high efficiency and chemistry effect of ultra-fine-grinding, the leaching process was developed and the gold leaching rate may reach 88%. With AM-2 Б resin as abosorber and sulfocarbamide (TU) as eluent, gold was recovered from cyanide pulp by resin-in-pulp. AM-2 Б resin has good adsorbability in cyanide solution(pH=10). It was easy to elude gold from the loaded resin with 0.1㏖/L cholhydric acid and 1㏖/L sulfocabamide. The effect of contact time, temperature and acidity etc. on the gold absorption had been examined with static methods. The results showed that the adsorption and desorption of gold could both reach over 98%. The effects of flow rate of solution on dynamic adsorption and elution of gold had been examined with dynamic methods. Breakthrough curve and elution curve had been drawn in this paper. A mild condition was determined through a number of experiments: leaching time 2 hours, liquid solid ratio 4:1, sodium cyanide 3kg/t, hydrogen peroxide 0.05%, sodium hexametaphosphate 0.05%; adsorption time 30 minutes, temperature 10-3$0^{\circ}C$, resin($m\ell$) solid(g) ratio 1:10, eluent resin ratio 10-20:1, velocity of eluent $1.5m\ell$/min. Under the mild condition, the gold recovery may reach 85%.
Purpose: This study aimed to measure static balance of low back pain patients while one-leg standing in abdominal compression belts. Methods: The study included 40 adult males and females at J university, divided into a low back pain patient group and a normal group through the Oswestry disability questionnaire (ODQ). The subjects were instructed to hold a one-leg standing posture for 15 seconds on a balance measurement plate while wearing an abdominal compression belt. Shifting distance (0.1 cm), mean velocity (cm/s), pressure, and contact area were analyzed using BioRescue (BioRescue, RMINGEIEIRIE, Rodez, France). The average value was used to measure the result 3 times for each condition. Results: Both normal and low back pain groups significantly decreased in the speed of sway while wearing the abdominal compression belt. Furthermore, the pressure of the center of motion significantly decreased in the low back pain groups while wearing abdominal compression belt. However, there were no significant differences in the speed of sway or the pressure of center of motion between groups after wearing the abdominal pressure belt. Conclusion: These results suggest that abdominal compression belts are one option for improving balance temporarily. However, balance after wearing abdominal compression vests depends on onset of back pain, age, and symptoms of pain in the groups with low back pain. Further research is needed to investigate muscle activity, dynamic balance, and the effect of the period of wearing abdominal compression belts in the variety of low back pain patients.
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of weight loss of polyethylene terephthalate(PET) fabrics on the mechanical properties such as bending and shear. In order to compare the effect of treatment machine on the mechanical properies of treated PET fabrics, PET fabrics were hydrolyzed with NaOH aqueous solution using Tank machine and Liquor flow machine, respectively. The results were as follows : 1. The bending rigidity and shear stiffness of hydrolyzed PET fabric decreased markedly up to about 10% weight loss regardless of treatment machines. At the above 10% weight loss, the variation of these properties is nearly unchanged. In addition, the bending hysteresis and shear hysteresis also showed similar trend. 2. Weft density change of PET fabrics treated with Liquor flow machine decreased by 1pick/inch. It is assumed that this is attributed to the tension during the treatment of Liquor flow machine. On the other hand, the weft density change of PET fabrics treated with Tank machine is scarcely influeneced by the weight loss. While warp density of PET fabrics treated with Liquor flow machine had no change with weight loss, warp density of PET fabrics treated with Tank machine decreased by 6pick/inch due to the tension. 3. The bending rigidity and shear stiffness of PET fabrics hydrolyzed with liquor flow machine slightly higher than with Tank m/c at the above 10% weight loss. It is assumed that this is caused by the increasement of the crossing pressure of warp and weft yarn and contact points of filaments in the yarns. Also, the bending and shear hysteresis of PET fabrics treated with Tank machine were higher than that of liquor flow machine.

Background We conducted an experimental study to compare the effect of massage using topical agents (Kelo-cote or Contractubex) on scar formation by massaging the healed burn wound on the dorsal area of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Methods Four areas of second degree contact burn were made on the dorsal area of each of 15 SD rats, using a soldering iron 15 mm in diameter. After gross epithelialization in the defect, 15 SD rats were randomly divided into four groups: the Kelo-cote group, Contractubex group, Vaseline group, and control group. Rats in three of the groups (all but the Control group) were massaged twice per day for 5 minutes each day, while those in the Control group were left unattended. For histologic analysis, we performed a biopsy and evaluated the thickness of scar tissue. Results In the Kelo-cote and Contractubex groups, scar tissue thicknesses showed a significant decrease, compared with the Vaseline and control groups. However, no significant differences were observed between the Kelo-cote and Contractubex groups. In the Vaseline group, scar tissue thicknesses showed a significant decrease, compared with the control groups. Conclusions The findings of this study suggest that massage using a topical agent is helpful in the prevention of scar formation and that massage only with lubricant (no use of a topical agent) also has a considerable effect, although not as much as the use of a topical agent. Thus, we recommend massage with a topical agent on the post-burn scar as an effective method for decreasing the scar thickness.

This paper proposes a new type of electro-mechanical wedge brake for commercial vehicles. The brake operates on a novel mechanism for self-boosting braking friction forces using eccentric shafts, and involves wedges that are inserted between the rampbridge and traverse; this self-boosting mechanism is explained herein. A dynamic analysis using ADAMS was conducted, and the findings are reported. The constraint and contact conditions are explained to verify the precision of the dynamic analysis. The dynamic analysis shows that in the proposed mechanism, the self-boosting effect occurs as desired. However, it is also noted that the system has a limitation in terms of the production of unlimited braking forces that can jam the roller inside the wedges. After demonstrating the self-boosting effect, dynamic analyses are performed for several values of the wedge angles and friction coefficients between the brake pads and disks. Conventionally, a lower wedge angle has been suggested owing to its provision of a larger clamping force for given friction coefficients. However, it is noted that lower wedge angles can lead to a higher probability of occurrence of undesirable high braking forces, which can jam the roller into the wedge; thus, a larger wedge angle is preferable for avoiding the undesirable jamming phenomena. These analysis results are presented and discussed herein.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of increased running speed on the magnitude of impact shock attenuation in high frequency (9~20 Hz) at support phase on the treadmill running. Method: Twenty-four healthy male heel-toe runners participated in this study. Average age, height, mass, and preference running speed were 23.43±3.78 years, 176.44±3.38 cm, 71.05±9.04 kg, and 3.0±0.5 m/s, respectively. Three triaxial accelerometer (Noraxon, USA) were mounted to the tuberosity of tibia, PSIS (postero-superior iliac spine), and forehead to collect acceleration signals, respectively. Accelerations were collected for 20 strides at 1,000 Hz during treadmill (Bertec, USA) running at speed of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 m/s. Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of three acceleration signals was calculated to use in transfer function describing the gain and attenuation of impact shock between the tibia and PSIS, and forehead. One-way ANOVA were performed to compare magnitude of shock attenuation between and within running speeds. The alpha level for all statistical tests was .05. Results: No significant differences resulted for magnitude of the vertical and resultant impact shock attenuation between the tibia and PSIS, and forehead between running speeds. However, significant differences within running speed were found in magnitude of the vertical shock attenuation between tibia and PSIS, tibia and forehead at speed of 2.5, 3.0 m/s, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, it might be conjectured that muscles covering the knee and ankle joints and shoe's heel pad need to strengthen to keep the lower extremities from injuries by impact shock at relatively fast running speed that faster than preferred running speed.

In the present study, a feasibility of an advanced oxidation process using UV/Hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$) system equipped with a medium pressure lamp for secondary effluent reclamation was investigated. Initial concentration of $H_2O_2$ and pH were changed to determine the optimum operation condition for the system. The removal efficiency of color was than 80% with 14.3mg/L of initial $H_2O_2$ and 5 minute of contact time in the UV/$H_2O_2$ system. The color removal was analyzed using first-order reaction equation. The dependence of rate constant (k) on initial $H_2O_2$ represented the rational relationship with maximum value. Residual $H_2O_2$ caused increase of effluent COD, since analyzing agent, dichromate, reacted with $H_2O_2$ in the sample. Therefore, excess initial concentration of $H_2O_2$ would significantly affect effluent COD measurement. At pH variation experiment, both residual $H_2O_2$ and color showed peak in the neutral pH range with the same pattern. Effect of $H_2O_2$ dose also enhanced color removal but raised residual $H_2O_2$ problem in the continuous operation UV system. In conclusion, these results indicated that medium pressure UV/$H_2O_2$ system could be used to control color in the secondary effluent for reclamation and reuse.

The safety of on-going ships is one of important concerns in the view of environment and human life. The ship in bad condition is likely to be subjected to accidental loads such as collision. Once she has one or several minor collision damages in the form of circle or ellipse, her ultimate strength under compression or tension load will be reduced. Here, it is important to evaluate the reduction ratio of ultimate strength due to the damage from safety point of view. The problem of strength reduction of a plate with cutout such as opening hole has been treated by many researchers. As a result, a closed-form formula on the reduction of ultimate strength of a plate considering the effect of several forms of cutout was suggested. However, the structure of ships is composed of a plate and a stiffener so-called a stiffened plate, and it is likely to be damaged at a plate and stiffeners together in collision. This paper is to investigate the effect of minor collision damage on ultimate strength of a stiffened plate by using numerical analysis. For this study, the shape of minor collision damage of a stiffened plate was made by using contact algorithm. The deformed shape was used as an initial shape for ultimate stress analysis. Then, a series of nonlinear FE analysis was conducted to investigate the reduction effects of ultimate strength of the stiffened plate. The boundary condition was applied as simply supported at all boundaries, and the tripping of stiffener among failure mode under compression loading was neglected. These results were settled in the form of reduction ratio between ultimate of original intact stiffened plate and that of damaged stiffened plate.

RFID(Radio frequency indentification) technology, that the reader detect the tag information attached on the objects without contact, is considered the kernel of realizing tile Ubiquitous Sensor Network. Particularly, because there are lots of tags(which the reader have to detect) in the UHF RFID system(that is applied at the Logistic & Distribution industry). In the UHF RFID system the negative effects, we called the tag-collision, may occur and we should solve these effects. So, in the EPCglobal Gen2 protocol they present the Slotted Random Anti-collision algorithm to prevent the tag-collision effect. In this paper, in order to minimize the tag-collision effect and bring on the system efficiency, we propose the Power Increasing Method that controls the transmission power of the reader depending on the environment and verily the improved performance.
