  • Phosphoric acid treatments were conducted to improve the adhesion property of polyketone film to rubber. The effects of phosphoric acid treatments were characterized by using a contact angle analyzer and a XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). Morphological changes were observed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM) as the acid treatment condition varied in concentration and time. The contact angle was found to significantly decrease with the acid treatment. According to the XPS, increased wettability was attributed to the inclusion of oxygen containing groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl by acid treatments. Cracks and pores were produced on the polyketone film surface and thus, roughness increased with the acid treatment. Interfacial adhesion strength between polyketone and natural rubber was largely improved by acid treatment due to the increased wettability and roughness of the polyketone surface. However, the higher level of acid treatment caused the degradation of the polyketone surface, and thus, its interfacial adhesion consequently decreased.

  • Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogels modified with various co-monomers, such as N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), and glycerol monomethacrylate (GMMA), were prepared to investigate the effect of adding a co-monomer on the water contents, surface wettability, and tensile modulus. These polymers were synthesized by thermal- and photo-polymerization in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phosphineoxide (TPO) as the initiators. The characteristics of the hydrogels were analyzed via FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopies, contact angle measurements, and tensile modulus measurements with UTM. Regarding the properties of water in the hydrogels, the ratio between free to bound water was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effects of adding the co-monomers on the water content, surface wettability, and tensile modulus for soft contact lenses were also investigated. In the case of p(HEMA-co-NVP) hydrogels, the increase in the equilibrium water content (EWC) was primarily due to the increase in the bound water content. For p(HEMA-co-GMMA) hydrogels, an increase in free water content was the main reason for the increased EWC. In contrast, in the case of p(HEMA-co-GMA) hydrogels, a decrease in bound water content was observed to be the main factor that reduced the EWC. Photo-polymerized PHEMA hydrogels showed enhanced surface wettability and tensile modulus as compared to those produced via thermal polymerization.

  • The tribological properties and van der Waals attractive forces and the thermal stability of films are very important characteristics of highly hydrophobic fluorocarbon (FC) films for the long-term reliability of nano system. The effect of thermal annealing on films and van der Waals attractive forces and friction coefficient of films have been investigate d in this study. It was coated Al wafer which was treated O2 and Ar that ocatfluorocyclobutane ($C_4_{8}$) and Ar were supplied to the CVD chamber in the ratio of 2:3 for deposition of FC Films. Static contact angle and dynamic contact angle were used to characterize FC films. Thickness of films was measured by variable angle spectroscopy ellipsometer (VASE). Nanotribological data was got by atomic force microscopy (AFM) to measure roughness, lateral force microscopy (LFM) to measure friction force, and force vs. distance (FD) curve to evaluate adhesion force. FC films were cured in N2 and vacuum. The film showed the slight changes in its properties after 3 hr annealing. FTIR ATR studies showed the decrease of C-F peak intensity in the spectra as the annealing time increased. A significant decrease of film thickness has been observed. The friction force of Al surface was at least thirty times higher than ones with FC films. The adhesive force of bare Al was greater than 100 nN. After deposit FC films adhesive force was decreased to 40 nN. The adhesive force of films was decreased down to 10 nN after 24 hr annealing. During 24 hr annealing in $N_2$and vacuum at $100^{\circ}C$ film properties were not changed so much.

  • Primary stability is a fundamental criteria of implant success. There has been various trials to increase initial stability and bone to implant contact. The objective of osteotome technique is to preserve all the existing bone by minimizing or even eliminating the drilling sequence of the surgical protocol. The bone layer adjacent to the osteotomy site is progressively compacted with various bone condensers(osteotomes) this will result in a denser bone to implant contact. This improved bone density helps to optimize primary implant stability in low density bone. The use of wide implant is one of methods to increse primary stability. They can be used in special situations in which they can increase the surface area available for implant anchorage and improve their primary stability The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the osteotome technique and implant width on primary stability. Osteotome technique was compared with conventional drilling method by resonance frequency measurments according to the implant fixtures diameter. The results were as follows: 1. The average of ISQ value was sightly higher in osteotome technique, but there was not statistically significant in regular and narrow implant(p <0.05). 2. Either osteotome technique or conventional technique. ISQ value was significantly higer as increasing of implant diameter(p <0.05). 3. ISQ value of drilling technique was higer than those of osteotome technique in wide implant. It was assumed to be caused by difference in final preparation diameter.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the periodontal wound healing effect of particulate equine bone mineral on canine alveolar bone defects. Methods: Twelve adult male beagle dogs were used as study subjects. The mandibular second and fourth premolars were extracted prior to the experimental surgery, and the extraction sites were allowed to heal for 8 weeks. After periodontal probing, two-walled defects were created at the mesial and distal sides of the mandibular third premolars bilaterally, and the defects were filled with equine particulate bone with collagen membrane or bovine particulate bone with collagen membrane, or collagen membrane alone. The defects without any treatment served as negative controls. After probing depth measurement, animals were sacrificed at 10, 16, and 24 post-surgery weeks for micro-computed tomographic and histomorphometric analysis. Results: The equine particulate bone-inserted group showed significantly decreased values of probing depth and first bone contact compared to the negative control and collagen membrane alone groups at weeks 10, 16, and 24 (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the new cementum length, newly-formed bone area, or newly-formed bone volume between equine particulate bone- and bovine particulate bone-inserted groups, both of which showed significantly increased values compared to the negative control and collagen membrane alone groups (P<0.05). Conclusions: Equine particulate bone showed significant differences in probing depth, first bone contact, new cementum length, newly formed bone area, and bone volume fraction values when compared to the negative control and collagen membrane alone groups. There were no significant differences between equine and bovine particulate bone substitutes in these parameters; therefore, we can conclude that equine particulate bone is equivalent to bovine bone for periodontal regeneration.

  • Batch adsorption of methyl orange (MO) from aqueous solution using three kinds of anion exchange membranes BI, BIII and DF-120B having different ion exchange capacities (IECs) and water uptakes ($W_R$) was investigated at room temperature. The FTIR spectra of anion exchange membranes was analysed before and after the adsorption of MO dye to investigate the intractions between dye molecules and anion exchange membranes. The effect of various parameters such as contact time, initial dye concentration and molarity of NaCl on the adsorption capacity was studied. The adsorption capacity found to be increased with contact time and initial dye concentration but decreased with ionic strength. The adsorption of MO on BI, BIII and DF-120B followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and the nonlinear forms of Freundlich and Langmuir were used to predict the isotherm parameters. This study demonstrates that anion exchange membranes could be used as useful adsorbents for removal of MO dye from wastewater.

  • Polycarbonate (PC) films have been irradiated with various kinds of ions according to energy and dose. Change of the optical transmittance and chemical characteristics were confirmed by UV-VIS and FTIR (ATR) spectroscopy respectively. These UV-A block in 400 nm was variable from 10 to 100% according to energy and doses. Surface electrical resistance of PC film irradiated by ion beam was $10^6-10^{13}{\Omega}/cm^2$, which reveal variation of conduction. Contact angle of film irradiated by ion beam was decreased than the pristine film. Polymer surface morphology was examined by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). As expected, degradation of polymer film was higher after irradiation with heavier Xe ions but the roughness in the polymer surface morphology were more pronounced for Ar ions. This observed effect can be explained by stronger compaction of polymer surface layer in the case of Xe irradiation, connected with a reduction of free volume available.

  • In the study area Uanggunbong-Samgunri area), Precambrian metamorphic complex, (Taebacksan gneiss complex, Hyundong gneiss complex, and Taebacksan schist complex) had undergone three different regional metamorphisms at least before Paleozoic. The Paleozoic sediments in the study area also had undergone three different metamorphisms at least. The first is low pressure type regional metamorphism, the second is low pressure type contact metamorphism due to the intrusion of Chunyang granite, and the last is medium pressure type metamorphism caused by thrust in south of Janggunbong area. The first metamorphism formed the prevailing metamorphic zones in the Paleozoic metasediments and the metamorphic grade of the first regional metamorphism increases from the chloritoid zone, through the staurolite zone, garnet zone, staurolite+biotite zone, and to the andalusite+biotite zone. The second metamorphism affected both Pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic metasediments located close to the Chunyang granite. The effect of the contact metamorphism is restricted to the very narrow zone around the granite. The third metamorphism that produced kyanite, is restricted to the very narrow region near the thrust fault in the south of Janggunbong with an E-W trend.

  • In recent years, the size of plane substrates and semiconductor wafers has increased. As conventional contact transportation systems composed of, for example, carrier rollers, belt conveyers, and robot hands carry these longer and wider substrates, the increased weight results in increased potential for fracture. A noncontact transportation system is required to solve this problem. We propose a new noncontact transportation system combining acoustic viscous and aerostatic forces to provide damage-free transport. In this system, substrates are supported by aerostatic force and transported by acoustic viscous streaming induced by traveling wave deformation of a disk-type stator. A ring-type piezoelectric transducer bonded on the stator excites vibration. A stator with a high Q piezoelectric transducer can generate traveling vibrations with amplitude of $3.2{\mu}m$. Prior to constructing a carrying road for substrates, we clarified the basic properties of this technique and stator vibration characteristics experimentally. We constructed the experimental equipment using a rotational disk with a 95-mm diameter. Electric power was 70 W at an input voltage of 200 Vpp. A rotational torque of $8.5\times10^{-5}Nm$ was obtained when clearance between the stator and disk was $120{\mu}m$. Finally, we constructed a noncontact transport apparatus for polycrystalline silicon wafers $(150(W)\times150(L)\times0.3(t))$, producing a carrying speed of 59.2 mm/s at a clearance of 0.3 mm between the stator and wafer. The carrying force when four stators acted on the wafer was $2\times10^{-3}N$. Thus, the new noncontact transportation system was demonstrated to be effective.

  • In order to improve the hydrophilic property of polymer films, coating solutions which showed a good hydrophilic property, were prepared by the sol-gel method. The coating solutions were prepared by adding different types of silane coupling agents (aminosilane, epoxysilane and acrylsilane) to a colloidal silica (15 nm diameter). The solutions prepared by adding aminosilane resulted in gels which could not be used as coating solutions. On the other hand, the coating solutions prepared by the addition of epoxysilane showed contact angles of $10{\sim}15^{\circ}$ and good hydrophilic property at R=0.10~0.15 (R=silane coupling agent/colloidal silica weight ratio). In addition, the coating solutions prepared by the addition of acrylsilane at R=0.03~0.07, exhibited contact angles of $5{\sim}10^{\circ}$, which means better hydrophilic property than aminosilane or epoxysilane.
