A Study in the 40-60s Korean Male Body Type Changes for Clothing Construction - Focused on the 5th and 6th Size Korea's Anthropometric Data - (의복 설계를 위한 40-60대 한국 남성의 체형 변화에 관한 연구 - 제 5차, 제 6차 Size Korea 직접 측정치를 기준으로 -)

  • This study analyzed the change pattern of Korean male body size in their 40s-60s and their current body shape based on the research materials of the 5th(2004) and 6th(2010) conducted by Size Korea. The purposes of this study are to make the related fashion industry recognize the changes of Korean male body size in their 40s-60s and suggest basic materials for clothing design that reflects such trend. As a result of analyzing changes of male body size in their 40s-60s by age, it was found that height, length, breadth and weight decreased across most of the items as the age increased. As for circumference, as the age increased, waist circumference (natural indentation), waist circumference (omphalion), and abdominal extension circumference increased, while other items decreased. In relation to the depth, as the age increased, hip depth and armscye depth decreased, while chest depth, bust depth, waist depth (natural indentation), and waist depth (omphalion) increased. Analyzing the change pattern of Korean male body size in their 40s-60s according to measurement year, height size increased in the 6th year across most of the body part items compared to the 5th year. It means that height of body parts related to body height increased in overall. As for circumference, most items showed decrease, which means that Korean male's body shape in their 40s-60s gets slim gradually. While the breadth of the chest decreased, the depth of the chest increased. which is assumed due to the increase in exercise according to high interest in health in a society. It will be possible to design proper clothes for consumer body type and trends if we design clothes that afford multilateral attention to the patterns, design, or material in clothing design by applying the aspects of Korean male body size in their 40s-60s and body type change.

A Study on the Factors Affecting the Consumption of Coffee and Tea among Female in Seoul (여성의 커피와 다류의 섭취에 영향을 주는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • The purposes of this study are : (a) to investigate the attitude to various coffee and tea of women, (b) to analyze the characteristics of each classified group according to eating frequency, and (c) to abstract the factors which can influence the consumption of coffee and tea. Questionnaires were hand delivered to 1,200 women residing in Seoul. A total of 1012 was usable: resulting in 84% response rate. Statistical data analysis was completed using SAS Package program for the one way-analysis of variance(ANOVA), Duncan's multiple comparison test, factor analysis and analysis of covariance (ANOCOVA). (a) Instant coffee was most consumed(22.1 times a month), green tea in tea bag(8.7), Donggulre tea(8.3), Coffee (72) in order of frequency. Among Korean traditional tea Donggulre tea(8.3) and Yuja tea (2.0) were most prefered but still a minute quantity of Korean traditional tea was enjoyed. (b) Coffee and Black tea was regarded unhealthful but habitual, delicious and familiar beverage. Green tea was regarded good for health but not so habitual, practical and familiar. The consumer awareness can be grouped into 3 clases : Healthy factor, Habitual Practical factor, Familiar factor. (c) The sociodemographic characteristics of women influenced the beverage consumption. Women in their 30s and 40s consumed much of instant coffee and coffee. 10s and 20s consumed much of canned coffee. Working women drank much of instant coffee and green tea in tea bag. Women in highest income group$({\geq}\;4,000,000\;won/month)$ consumed much of coffee. (d) The factors which influenced the eating frquency of those beverages were various. The eating frequency of instant coffee was influenced by the age, familiar factor and habitual practical factor. And coffee were influenced by income level, habitual practical factor. The frequency of green tea in tea bag was influenced by habitual practical factor and familiar factor, green tea was influenced by healthy factor and habitual practical factor, Donggulre tea was influenced by habitual practical factor.

The Change of Housewives' Purchase Behaviors by Food Safety Incidents; in Relation to the Outbreak of 2008 Melamine Incident in Korea (식품안전사건사고에 따른 주부들의 식품 구매행동 변화 -2008년 멜라민 사건을 중심으로-)

  • This study surveyed the change of housewives' purchase behaviors by food safety incidents; the outbreak of 2008 Melamine incident in Korea as for example. 565 housewives in Gunsan were interviewed in March 2009. 52.3% of respondents were regarded as unsatisfactory for food safety management in Korea. Despite the result of scientific assessment for melamine, 74.6% of respondents were yet regarded as health-threatening substance. By the point of before, during and after Melamine-related food safety incident, we were surveyed the level of purchase for melamine-related food items as five scales, the results were $2.47{\pm}0.97$, $1.80{\pm}0.92$ and $1.62{\pm}0.92$, respectively (p < 0.001). After the incident happened, the purchase level was even more reduced. This study also found that there were significance difference (p < 0.05) among the respondents' knowledge for melamine toxicity and food safety management in Korea concerning housewives' purchase behaviors, i.e. the more accurately for melamine toxicity and higher satisfactory of consciousness of food safety, there were less change of purchase behaviors. In conclusion, the consciousness of food safety and accurate knowledge of hazards were significantly affected for the change of housewives' purchase behaviors by food safety incidents. Therefore, it can be suggested that the need for more scientific risk communication strategies with consumer.

The Quality and Antioxidant Properties of Cookies containing Aronia Powder (아로니아 분말을 첨가한 쿠키의 품질특성 및 항산화 활성)

  • This study investigated the quality characteristics of cookies containing Aronia powder, which is well known for its various functions and biological activity. In this study, we assessed the quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of cookies containing various concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) of Aronia powder(AP). To analyze quality characteristics, pH of dough, moisture content, color(L, a, b), hardness, and sensory properties were measured. Qualities, such as moisture content, redness and yellowness and hardness increased significantly (p<0.001). whereas pH and lightness of the cookies significantly decreased (p<0.001). The antioxidant activity measured by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were significantly higher than the control, and it proportionally increased as the amount of AP increased (p<0.001). The results of sensory properties showed that cookies made with 2% and 4% AP did not differ significantly from the control in color, taste, and overall quality. Texture scores for the 2% and 4% AP groups ranked significantly higher than those of the other groups. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that AP is a beneficial ingredient for increasing the consumer acceptability and functionality of cookies. The quality characteristics of the 4% added samples exhibited significantly similar or higher values as compared to those of the controls, raising the possibility of developments in health-functional cookies. The results of the sensory evaluation produced very significant values for color, appearance, texture, and overall quality of instrumental analysis.

Enhancement of Liver Function by Curcuma Extract on Acute Hepatotoxicity in Rat (랫트의 간 손상에 대한 울금 추출물의 간 기능 개선 효과)

  • The effects of Curcuma extract Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum), and maltodextrose on acute hepatotoxicity in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were investigated. Acute hepatotoxicity was induced by 0.5 mL of carbon tetrachloride ($CCl_4$) per kg of SD rats, which was injected to them before administration of Curcuma extract or both Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum) and maltodextrose mixtures. SD rats dose with Curcuma extract of 4 mg or 40 mg per kg per day significantly (p<0.05) reduced the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALKP) after 7 days compared to the controls dose with water. Treatments of Curcuma extract with 4 mg per kg per day in SD rats significantly (p<0.05) reduced aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALKP) to 78.0%, 82.6%, and 76.3% after 7 days compared to the controls, respectively. The levels of AST and ALT in SD rats dose with both Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum) and maltodextrose mixtures or either alone had no significantly different (p>0.05) compared to the controls. Treatments of Curcuma extract combined with Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum) and maltodextrose mixtures was 'liked more' to the sensory scores for odor and flayer compared to the controls. It was considered that Curcuma extract combined with both Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum) and maltodextrose mixtures could be used to functional food for enhancement of health and consumer acceptance.

Refined Exposure Assessment for Three Active Ingredients of Humidifier Disinfectants

  • Exposure assessment for three major active ingredients used for humidifier disinfectants, polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG), oligo(2-(2-ethoxy)ethoxyethyl guanidinium chloride (PGH), and 5-chloro-2-methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one/2-methylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (CMIT/MIT) mixture, was conducted in a bedroom using an air sampler for a refined risk assessment. The experimental site was selected to reflect consumer exposure conditions. Aerosols formed by a humidifier were sampled during 8 hr at 7.5 L/min. Absorbed PHMG and PGH by the sampler were quantified using a spectrophotometric method, and high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection was used for CMIT/MIT. Three exposure scenarios were assumed for adding humidifier disinfectants to the humidifier water at 1, 2, and 10 times the volume recommended by the product suppliers, and the humidifier was on at its maximum rate of producing aerosols in order to consider reasonable worst-cases. The sampled mass of PHMG and PGH ranged 200 to $2,800{\mu}g$ and 140 to $1,900{\mu}g$, respectively, under different exposure conditions, whereas the absorbed mass of CMIT/MIT was barely detected at the detection limit of 0.11/0.29 mg/L, only at 10 times the recommended level. The resulting risk quotients for PHMG and PGH ranged 1,400 to 20,000 and 1,000 to 13,000, indicating that health risks could be significant. For CMIT/MIT mixture, risk quotients were much smaller than estimated by assuming that they are conservative in the indoor environment, probably due to oxidative reactions. The refined exposure assessment presented here may provide a useful tool for assessing risks posed by active ingredients in spray-type biocidal products.

Strategic Approaches to Solid Ranking International Journals: KODISA Journals (국제저널 육성 방향과 전망: KODISA Journals를 중심으로)

  • Purpose - The purposes of this editorial review are twofold: firstly, to introduce the four flagship international journals of the Korea Distribution Science Association(KODISA): the Journal of Distribution Science(JDS), the Journal of Industrial Distribution & Business(JIDB), the East Asian Journal of Business Management(EAJBM), and the Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Business(JAFEB), and secondly, to identify the direction of the KODISA journals and the roles and responsibilities of the editors of the KODISA journals. Research design, data, and methodology - To achieve the goals, firstly, this review paper addresses the current progress of the four KODISA journals: JDS, JIDB, EAJBM, and JAFEB. Secondly, this paper defines the aims and missions of the four KODISA journals. JDS publishes the articles of examining past, current, and emerging trends and concerns in the area of distribution science and economics, logistics and SCM, transportation, distribution channel management, distribution innovation and information technology, merchandising and procurement, distribution and marketing, consumer behavior, and manufacturing, wholesaling, and retailing. JDS publishes both quantitative and qualitative research as well as scholarly commentaries, case studies, book reviews and other types of reports relating to all aspects of distribution. JIDB publishes the articles of examining past, current, and emerging trends and concerns in the areas of industry and corporate behavior, industry policy making, industrial distribution and business, e-commerce, and service industry. EAJBM publishes empirical and theoretical research papers as well as scholarly commentaries, case studies, book reviews, and other types of reports relating to all aspects of East Asian business and economy. JAFEB publishes original research analysis and inquiry into the contemporary issues of finance, economics and business management in Asia, including Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Middle East. The mission of JAFEB is to bring together the latest theoretical and empirical finance, economics and business management research in Asian markets. The audiences of the KODISA journals include higher education institutions, scholars, industry researchers and practitioners, scientists, economists, and policy makers throughout the world. The main mission of the KODISA journals is to provide an intellectual platform for international scholars, promote interdisciplinary studies in social sciences and economics, and become leading journals in the social science and economics category in the world. Thirdly, this paper addresses the current status of indexing in major databases of the KODISA journals, namely: Cabell's Directories, EBSCO, SCOPUS (Elsevier), and Social Sciences Citation Index® (SSCI, Thomson Reuters). Fourthly, this paper identifies the roles and responsibilities of the editors of the KODISA journals as the following: (1) Make sure that the journal be published in a timely manner and in international standards both in print and online versions. (2) Maintain the online homepage of the journal is always accessible to, and (3) Make sure that every article should go through a peer review process that meets international standards. Findings and conclusion - To accomplish the goals and missions of the KODISA journals, the editors of the KODISA journals must work together to publish high scholarly journals that meet international standards of journal publications.

Changes in Antioxidant Activity of Duck Egg after Pressurized Soaking in Green Tea Extract (녹차 추출물에 가압 침지한 오리알의 항산화 활성 변화)

  • This study was carried out to investigate changes in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) contents and antioxidant activity of duck egg after pressurized soaking in green tea extract. The duck eggs were soaked in different concentrations of green tea extract (10~30%) and subjected to pressures of 0.1~5.0 MPa for 30 min at ambient temperature in a lab model high-pressure rig. After pressured treatment at 5.0 MPa in 30% green tea extract, EGCG content of duck egg white (20 mg/100 g) markedly increased compared to that of untreated sample (0.17 mg/100 g). Moreover, the antioxidant, hepato-protective, and cellular antioxidant activities of duck egg white after pressured treatment at 5 MPa in 30% green tea extract were all higher than those of untreated sample. Our results could have a direct impact on duck egg consumption by increasing consumer awareness of the health benefits of duck eggs.

  • Looking at the application examples related to RFID systems around the world, it is easy to find that RFID systems are introduced in various industries, such as retail and consumer goods sectors, financial and security sectors, automotive and transport sector, leisure and sports sector, logistics, and health-related fields. This is because they can get their operational efficiency and competitiveness by means of product's visibility and transparency of information through RFID systems. However, it is required that evaluation of effectiveness on introducing RFID systems should be performed to strengthen construction willingness of RFID systems before actual introduction of the RFID systems in the process. This activity affects to introduction of RFID systems in industry-wide and then, will be able to create a synergy effect such as national industrial competitiveness improvement. The purpose of this study is to offer rational method on effectiveness analysis before and after RFID based process. Accordingly, the proposed Choquet fuzzy integral-based model will be allowed rational analysis by integrating quantitative and qualitative analysis. Through the effectiveness analysis of C company's RFID based process using the proposed evaluation model, we could identify that RFID-based logistics process was more effective than existing process.

Effects of combined acetic acid and UV-C irradiation treatment on the microbial growth and the quality of sedum during its storage (Acetic acid와 UV-C 병합처리가 돌나물의 저장 중 미생물 성장과 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • With the current consumer trend toward health and wellbeing, the demand for consumption of fresh cut vegetables has been increasing. As a popular vegetable with functional components, sedum (Sedum sarmentosum) is widely used in Korea as a side dish that needs no cooking. In this study, to provide a hurdle technology for postharvest sedum, the effects of combined treatment of 1% acetic acid for washing and $10kJ/m^2$ UV-C irradiation on the microbial growth and quality of sedum were examined. After the treatment, the sedum samples were stored at $10^{\circ}C$ for six days, and the results of their microbial analysis as well as their color, vitamin C content, and antioxidant activity were analyzed. The combined treatment with acetic acid and UV-C irradiation reduced the initial populations of the total aerobic bacteria and the yeast and molds in the sedum by 3.28 and 4.22 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to those in the control. The Hunter L, a, and b values of the sedum did not significantly differ across the treatments. In addition, the vitamin C content and the antioxidant activity decreased significantly during the storage, regardless of the treatment. These results suggest that the combined treatment with 1% acetic acid and $10kJ/m^2$ UV-C irradiation can be useful as a hurdle technology for retaining the microbiological safety and quality of sedum during its storage.
