  • For geotechnical design in practice, soils are, in general, assumed to behave as a linear elastic or perfect plastic material. More realistic geotechnical design, however, should take into account various factors that affect soil behavior in the field, such as non-linearity of stress-strain response, stress history, and water content. In this study, a series of laboratory tests including triaxial and resonant column tests were peformed with sands of various silt contents, relative densities, stress states, OCR and water contents. This aims at investigating effects of various factors that affect strength and stiffness of sands. From the results in this study, it is found that the effect of OCR is significant for the intermediate stress-strain range from the initial to failure, while it may be ignored for the initial stiffness and peak strength. For the effect of water content, it is observed that the initial elastic modulus decreases with increasing water content at lower confining stress and relative density At higher confining stresses, the effect of water content Is found to become small.

  • This paper presents a method for developing a probability-based working stress design code for reinforced concrete. Reliability of reinforced concrete structural members is evaluated by using an advanced second moment reliability method, and then, a practical method for code calibration is shown in this paper. The target reliability indices for various structural elements are determined by considering the results of the numerical studies on the safety of the structures designed by the current code, and by reflecting the construction practice. A set of allowable stresses and safety factors for reinforced concrete is proposed as a possible substitute for the current safety provisions, based on the rational target reliability indices.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is a strong independent predictor of future cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. We evaluated the relationship between hsCRP and dietary intake in apparently healthy young women living in southern Vietnam. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Serum hsCRP was measured and dietary intake data were obtained using the 1-day 24-hour recall method in women (n = 956; mean age, $25.0{\pm}5.7$ years) who participated in the International Collaboration Study for the Construction of Asian Cohort of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) in 2011. RESULTS: Women in the high risk group (> 3 mg/L) consumed fewer fruits and vegetables, total plant food, potassium, and folate than those in the low risk group (< 1 mg/L). A multiple regression analysis after adjusting for covariates revealed a significant negative association between hsCRP and fruit and vegetable consumption. A logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio (OR) of having a high hsCRP level in women with the highest quartiles of consumption of fruits and vegetables [OR, 0.391; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.190-0.807], potassium [OR, 0.425; 95% CI, 0.192-0.939] and folate [OR, 0.490; 95% CI, 0.249-0.964] were significantly lower than those in the lowest quartiles. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that, in young Vietnamese women, an increased consumption of fruit and vegetables might be beneficial for serum hsCRP, a risk factor for future CVD events.

  • Until the 4th Industrial Revolution fused the Web with diverse technologies, the only factor in evaluating the performance of a Web application was the loading speed of the Web application. Therefore, most existing Web application performance analysis tools focus on the speed at which Web applications run in a Web browser. However, the web is now being used not only in a simple web browser but also in a variety of services. So, in addition to simple speed, there are more elements to be checked to evaluate web applications. Therefore, in this paper, we design a server to perform web application performance analysis considering progressive web app, accessibility, best practice, and search engine optimization as well as the above mentioned speed. Also, we realize a REST API based server that can provide web application performance services without being affected by user's devices or environment.

  • In order to create a worker-friendly environment for institutional foodservice, facilities operating with a dry kitchen system have been recommended. This study was designed to compare the work safety and work environment of foodservice between wet and dry kitchen systems. Data were obtained using questionnaires with a target group of 303 staff at 57 foodservice operations. Dry kitchen facilities were constructed after 2006, which had a higher construction cost and more finishing floors with anti-slip tiles, and in which employees more wore non-slip footwear than wet kitchen (76.7%). The kitchen temperature and muscular pain were the most frequently reported employees' discomfort factors in the two systems, and, in the wet kitchen, "noise of kitchen" was also frequently reported as a discomfort. Dietitian and employees rated the less slippery and slip related incidents in dry kitchens than those of wet kitchen. Fryer area, ware-washing area, and plate waste table were the slippery areas and the causes were different between the functional areas. The risk for current leakage was rated significantly higher in wet kitchens by dietitians. In addition, the ware-washing area was found to be where employees felt the highest risk of electrical shock. Muscular pain (72.2%), arthritis (39.1%), hard-of-hearing (46.6%) and psychological stress (47.0%) were experienced by employees more than once a month, particularly in the wet kitchen. In conclusion, the dry kitchen system was found to be more efficient for food and work safety because of its superior design and well managed practices.

  • This study presents the evaluation of the patching materials that are used to repair the distress of asphalt pavement. Four kinds of patching materials currently used in practice were tested in both laboratory and field. The laboratory tests included the dry and soaked Marshall stability test, indirect tensile test, wheel tracking test and adhesive strength between the asphalt pavement and the repairing material was tested as a performance test. The field study was conducted using the slab samples placed on the location of vehicle tire passing and the performance of the repairing materials were investigated as passing the traffic load. The result of the laboratory tests were satisfied with the current design criteria and material standard except for water-immersion stability. Type C patching material showed the highest adhesive shear strength among the patching materials tested. However, the mature distress, such as rutting and stripping were monitored after construction in 10 days. It was found that performance of patching material is lack of quality behavior when they were applied in the field and required to develop and applu to prevent the mature distress of the current patching materials.

  • Retaining wall with relieving platform has advantages in terms of stability and costs because it decreases the earth pressure by installing the relieving platform. However, there have not been previous studies of the optimal design for the retaining wall with reliving platform in practice. In this study, the optimal design conditions of the retaining wall with relieving platform are proposed by evaluating the reduction effect of lateral earth pressure based on the numerical analysis of 40 cross sections by changing wall types, wall heights, shelf locations and lengths. As a result, the optimal location of a shelf is the central part of a retaining wall (h/H=0.50) and the optimal length is recommended to be designed to satisfy b/L=0.45, at least.

  • Vibrations induced by traffic loading and construction activities are extremely important due to their potential to cause damage to adjacent structures and toy complaints to the neighbors. Vibration induced damage to the built environment may be caused by the direct transmission of vibrations as well as by the, vibration induced differential settlement. In order to effectively control the vibration related problems, the accurate in-situ vibration monitoring is essential. In this paper, a calibration technique of a geophone which is widely used in practice was described. Once the frequency characteristics of individual geophones were calibrated, the 3fomponent geophone was developed for the in-depth vibration measurement, and the dot ailed calibration and application techniques of the 3fomponent geophone were described. Vibrations caused by blasting, train loading, and pile driving were measured and the applicability of the 3fomponent geophone was assessed.
