This study is aiming at estimating the demolition cost of deterioration housing by the rational method in order to provide for the demolition and new build project of the rental multi-family housing of LH. We investigated the actual state of demolition construction and work process of small size housing, and analysed an actual condition of estimation for the demolition cost through an advice by the expert of construction cost estimate. Furthermore, the 'estimation standard for the predetermined amount', 'estimation standard for the disposal cost of construction wastes' and precedent studies in public construction work were considered. As one of results in this study, cost accounting system, breakdown system and construction cost for the demolition work based on the standard of estimate were proposed and the predetermined amount of demolition construction for the multi-family housing with 2 or 3 floors could be produced by them. Eventually, It is estimated that the demolition cost per a multi-family housing is about 18,331,000(won) and 104,000(won) per floorage($m^2$). To the details, the result indicated that the direct demolition cost needs about 14,339,000(won) per a multi-family housing and the consignment disposal cost of wastes needs 3,992,000(won) per one. The results of the study will be used as the fundamental data to estimate the project cost in the phase of budget establishment for demolition and new build project of the deteriorated rental multi-family housings, and also cost accounting system of demolition construction and breakdown system are expect to be used effectively at the ordering of public construction work.

Waterjet has been comprehensively used in urban areas owing to a suitable technique for cutting concrete and rock, and low noise and vibration. Recently, the abrasive waterjet technique has been adopted and applied by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute to demolish concrete plugging without disturbing and damaging In-situ Demonstration of Engineered Barrier System in the disposal research tunnel. In this study, the use of abrasive waterjet in the tunnel was evaluated for practical applicability and the existing cutting model was compared with the experimental results. As a variable for waterjet cutting, multi-cutting, water flow rate, abrasive flow rate, and standoff distance were selected for the diversity of analysis. As regarding the practical application, the waterjet facilitated path selection for cutting the concrete plugging and prevented additional disturbances in the periphery. The pump's noise at idling was 64.9 dB which is satisfied with the noise regulatory standard, but it exceeded the standard at ejection to air and target concrete because the experiment was performed in the tunnel space. The experimental result showed that the error between the predicted and measured cutting volume was 12~13% for the first cut and 16% for second cut. The standoff distance had a significant influence on the cutting depth and width, and the error tended to decrease with decrement of standoff distance.

Leading waste disposal countries, such as Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, conduct safety assessments across all stages of High-Level Radioactive Waste Deep Geological Disposal Facilities-from planning and site selection to construction, operation, closure, and post-closure management. As safety assessments are repeatedly performed at each stage, generating vast amounts of diverse data over extended periods, it is essential to construct a database for safety assessment and establish a data management system. In this study, the safety assessment data management systems of leading countries, were analyzed, categorizing them into 1) input and reference data for safety assessments, 2) guidelines for data management, 3) organizational structures for data management, and 4) computer systems for data management. While each country exhibited differences in specific aspects, commonalities included the classification of safety assessment input data based on disposal system components, the establishment of organizations to supply, use, and manage this data, and the implementation of quality management systems guided by instructions and manuals. These cases highlight the importance of data management systems and document management systems for securing the safety and enhancing the reliability of High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities. To achieve this, the classification of input data that can be flexibly and effectively utilized, ensuring the consistency and traceability of input data, and establishing a quality management system for input data and document management are necessary.
In the licensing application for the deep geological disposal system of high-level radioactive waste in Finland, the disposal tunnel backfilling has been changed from the block/pellet (for the construction) to the granular type (for the operation). Accordingly, for establishing the design concept for backfilling, it is necessary to examine applicability to the domestic facility through analyzing problems of the existing method and improvements in the alternative design. In this paper, we first reviewed the principal studies conducted for changing the backfill method in the licensing process of the Finnish facility, and identified the expected problems in applying the block/pellet backfill method. In addition, we derived the evaluation factors to be considered in terms of technical and operational aspects for the backfilling solution, and then conducted a comparative analysis for two types of backfill methods. This analysis confirmed the overall superiority of the design change. It is expected that these results could be utilized as the technical basis for deriving the optimum design plan in development process of the Korean-specific deep disposal facility. However, applicability should be reviewed in advance based on the latest technical data for the detailed evaluation factors that must be considered for selecting the backfilling method.

The design and development of underground nuclear waste repositories should cover the performance evaluation of the different components such as the construction materials because the long term stability will depend on their response to the surrounding conditions. In South Korea, Gyeonju bentonite has been proposed as a candidate to be used as buffer and backfilling material, especially in the form of blocks to speed up the construction process. In this study, various cylindrical samples were prepared with different dry density and water content, and their physical and mechanical properties were analyzed and correlated with X-ray CT observations. The main objective was to characterize the samples and establish correlations for non-destructive estimation of physical and mechanical properties through the utilization of X-ray CT images. The results showed that the Uniaxial Compression Strength and the P-wave velocity have an increasing relationship with the dry density. Also, a higher water content increased the values of the measure parameters, especially for the P-wave velocity. The X-ray CT analysis indicated a clear relation between the mean CT value and the dry density, Uniaxial Compression Strength, and P-wave velocity. The effect of the higher water content was also captured by the mean CT value. Also, the relationship between the mean CT value and the dry density was used to plot CT dry densities using CT images only. Moreover, the histograms also provided information about the samples heterogeneity through the histograms' full width at half maximum values. Finally, the particle size and heterogeneity were also analyzed using the Madogram function. This function identified small particles in uniform samples and large particles in some samples as a result of poor mixing during preparation. Also, the μmax value correlated with the heterogeneity, and higher values represented samples with larger ranges of CT values or particle densities. These image-based tools have been shown to be useful on the non-destructive characterization of bentonite samples, and the establishment of correlations to obtain physical and mechanical parameters solely from CT images.

The construction of an underground silo structure was the first stage of erecting the Gyeongju low-and-intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility. The facility, completed in 2014, has a scale of 100 000 drums and is currently in operation. The underground silo structure, 25 and 50 m in diameter and height, respectively, consists of cylindrical (for storing waste packages) and dome parts. The dome is divided into lower (connected to the operation tunnel) and upper parts. The wall of the underground silo structure is an approximately 1-m-thick reinforced concrete liner. In this study, finite element analysis was performed for each phase of the construction sequence and operation of the underground silo structure. Two-dimensional axial symmetric finite element analysis was implemented using the SMAP-3D program. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was also performed to examine the reliability of the two-dimensional axial symmetric finite element model. The structural behavior of the underground silo structure was predicted, and its structural safety was examined.

Sewage facilities are positively necessary for environment improvement such as rainwater removal, sewage disposal, preservation of the qualify of water and health of the citizens in present-day. Meanwhile, a deterioration of the concrete sewer pipe is increasing rapidly due to the chemical and physical attack and especially biochemical attack that is to say biodeterioration. In this study, researches for the development of antibiotics and antimicrobial concrete were conducted to reduce biochemical corrosion of sewage concrete. First of all, desired performance, such as watertightness, antibiosis, homogeneity, workability and harmlessness, was proposed and performance of antibiotics and antimicrobial concrete were evaluated by them. And developed antimicrobial concrete was applied to actual construction field. As results of this study, dispersibility and antibiosis of liquid antibiotics superior to powdery antibiotics. Antibiosis of antimicrobial concrete was verified, and amount of elution of harmful and effective ingredients was little. In workability, setting time of antimicrobial concrete was delayed. Compressive strength and resistance to carbonation of antimicrobial concrete were more increased than ordinary concrete. Finally, as there were no problems in quality and construction progress of antimicrobial concrete produced in plant, applicability of antimicrobial concrete to actual construction field was verified.
The Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute is currently planning the construction of an Underground Research Tunnel to carry out research and development related to the disposal of high-level wastes from nuclear reactors used to generate electrical power. This paper discusses the excavation methods used to construct the Canadian Underground Research Laboratory and their application in planning for the construction of a similar underground laboratory and eventually an underground repository for high-level wastes in Korea.
Waste materials in concrete have been considered as one of the most important issues by the authorities, policy makers and researchers to maintain engineering serviceability in terms of economy, durability and sustainability. Therefore, evaluation and selection of waste materials with respect to multi criteria decision making (MCDM) for the construction industry has been gained importance for recovery and reuse. In this paper, Choquet integral based fuzzy approach is proposed for evaluating the most suitable waste materials with respect to compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, compactness, toughness (resistivity for dynamic loads), water absorption and accessibility. On conclusion, waste tyre and silica fume were determined as the most suitable waste materials for concrete production. The obtained results are recommended to assist the authorities on configuring well designed strategies for construction industry with disposal materials.

Recently, the study to reduce and recycle industrial waste is underway vigorously in the various fields of industry according to the conservation of environment and resources. In construction work, the disposal problem of its waste and environmental disruption have already been serious all over the world. However the recycle of waste concrete is still at an early stage, recycled aggregate from waste concrete have only used those as subsidiary road fillers. The research institute and the company make the study that it is about the properties of recycled aggregate and those structural capacity since 1990. Through the experimentation last year, we know that strength and fluidity of recycle cement are inferior to normal cement, and admixing aggregate powder deteriorates its strength. The purpose of this study is to search for appropriate heating time and to improve performance of the recycle cement while heating hardened cement which is crushed, we investigate separating aggregate from hardened cement by preheating and improvement of strength and fluidity inrecycle cement which contains admixture.
