  • This study performed to establish tile characteristics of constant rate of strain consolidation(CRSC) tests. The values obtained by the CRCS tests were compared with oedometer tests. From the comparision of the results of oedometer and CRSC tests for soft soil from Haenam, Korea, it was concluded that. 1. When rate of strain is 0.9mm/hr, compression curve of CRSC test was not coincided with those of tile oedometer test, then preconsolidation stress was larger than those of other rates of strain. 2. Permeabilities from CRSC tests and direct measurements were about same each other, but permeabilities from Oedometer tests were large than those from others.

  • DCB(pure mode I) and CLS(mixed mode) tests were performed to investigate the effect of fracture mode on the interlaminar fracture of composite laminate. Mode I critical strain energy release rate was found to be $133J/m^2$ from the DCB test and total strain energy release rate decreased from $1, 270J/m^2$ as thickness ratio(tl/t) varied from 0.333 to 0.667 from the crease from the CLS test. Crack length had no effect on the total strain energy release rate and load was almost constant during the crack growth of the specimen which had the specific thickness ratio. Crack initiated when the stress of the strap ply reached constant stress $42kgf/mm^2$ which was found to be independent of the thickness ratio.

  • The cause of corrosion failure found in structures or various components operating in severe corrosive environments has been attributed to stress corrosion cracking(SCC)which is resulting from the combined effects of corrosive environments and static tensile stress. Slow strain rate test (SSRT) provides a rapid reliable method to determine SCC susceptibility of metals and alloys for a broad range of application. The chief advantage of SSRT procedures is that it is much more aggressive in producing SCC than conventional constant strain or constant load tests, so that the testing time is considerably reduced. Therefore, in this paper, the combined effects of material properties and strain rate on the tensile ductility and fracture morphology of parents and weldment for SM45C, SCM440 and SM20C steels were examined and discussed in synthetic sea water. The susceptibility of SCC was the most severe under the strain rate of $1.0{\times}10^{-6} sec^{-1}$, and R.O.A. can be used for parent and maximum load for weldment to evaluate the parameter for SCC susceptibility.

  • In the present study, the tensile properties and dynamic strain aging of an Fe-24.5Mn-4Cr-0.45C alloy were investigated in terms of strain rate. During tensile testing at room temperature, all the stress-strain curves exhibited serrated plastic flows related to dynamic strain aging, regardless of the strain rate. Serration appeared right after yield stress at lower strain rates, while it was hardly observed at high strain rates. On the other hand, strain-rate sensitivity, indicating a general relationship between flow stress and strain rate at constant strain and temperature, changed from positive to negative as the strain increased. The negative strain-rate sensitivity can be explained by the Portevin Le Chatelier effect, which is associated with dynamic strain aging and is dependent on the strain rate because it is very likely that the dynamic strain aging phenomenon in high-manganese steels is involved in the interaction between moving dislocations and point-defect complexes.

  • In order to analyze effects of strain rate on consolidation characteristics on Busan clay, a series of constant rate of strain(CRS) consolidation tests with different strain rate and incremental loading test(ILT) were performed. From experimental test results, it was found that the preconsolidation pressure was dependent on the corresponding strain rate occurred during consolidation process. Also, consolidation curves normalized with respect to preconsolidation pressure gave a unique stress-strain curve. Coefficient of consolidation and permeability estimated from CRS test had a tendancy to converge to a certain value at normally consolidated range regardless of strain rate. An increase in excess pore pressure without change of total stress was noted on the incremental loading test after the end of loading.

  • In this study, a constant rate of strain test (CRS) and oedometer test was performed in order to study the consolidation characteristics to the liquid limit using a re-shaped clay which was preconsolidated at a constant pressure. Consolidation samples were made of kaolinite which was mixed with bentonite of 6 %, 9 %, 12 % and 15 % of it by weight and the test value of liquid limit of samples were appeared in 77 %, 84 %, 88 % and 91 % respectively. And then consolidation samples which were agitated sufficiently adding distilled water 2 times of liquid limit were preconsolidated in the condition of a constant pressure of 0.2 MPa. The oedometer test which is commonly used recently and the consolidation test of constant rate of strain which were applied in 0.001 %/min, 0.004 %/min, 0.01 %/min rate of strain according to ASTM, D4186-82 were performed and the preconsolidation pressures were compared and analyzed at 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure. As a result, in the case of low value of liquid limit, preconsolidation pressure was appeared same as 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure at the high speed strain rate, and in the case of high value of liquid limit, preconsolidation pressure was appeared same as 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure at the low speed strain rate.

  • Several rheological terms were introduced to estimate the properties of cooked noodles with different starch content using tensile tests. Ring-shaped specimens were prepared by connecting both ends of the noodle strip before cooking. Hencky strain and rate, as well as true stress were applied in constant deformation tests. The elastic region on the curves of strain vs. stress was not clearly identified. Strain hardening in the subsequent plastic region was more prominent in low-starch noodles. Elongational viscosities at lower strain rates were used to differentiate noodles with different starch content, representing the dominant effect of protein content in the range of lower strain rates. In stress relaxation tests, the reciprocal of Peleg's constant $K_1$ (initial decay rate) and $K_2$ (asymptotic level) increased and decreased respectively, with an increase in starch content. This indicated that addition of starch contributed to the noodles becoming viscous liquid rather than elastic solid.

  • The swelling index of clayey soil was examined by constant rate of strain(CRS) consolidation test. Four kinds of strain rate were applied during unloading. The strain rates are l/l, l/5, 1/10, l/l 5 of loading. The strain rates during loading are 0.05%/min and 0.03%/min. From the test results using standard consolidometer, the swelling indexes were much similar values in case of 1/5 or 1/10 of the strain rate during loading stage. In the relation between effective stress and excess pore water pressure ratio, it was found that the existence of cross point and the stress level can be separated into two zones according to the swelling index.

  • Recently, the case to construct the structure on the soft clayey ground has increased and in order to the reduction of the cost of construction and maintenance on the social infrastructure facilities we have been trying to improve the soft clayey ground using the existing methods such as the pre-loading method and the vertical drain method. Like this, when various ground improvement methods are applied on the soft clayey ground, a long-term consolidation settlement will be key issue due to low permeability coefficient of cohesive soil. According to existing research results that relate to the consolidation settlement, the loading periods for existing the standard consolidation test (Oedometer test) to obtain the consolidation parameters are needed for minimum ten days or more. Therefore, in this study, the standard consolidation test (24 hours step-loading) and constant strain rate consolidation test changed by strain rate was performed using the remolded marine clay on Gwangyang bay composed of a soft clayey ground of the south-west coast. From the laboratory test results, the characteristics of compression, strain-effective stress relations by constant strain rate and the variation characteristic of the pore water pressure by different of loading speed and the relation between consolidation parameters and constant strain rate are compared and analyzed.
