NearSurface geophysical applications in Greece focused in archaeological prospection

  • In this paper several recent case studies of near surface geophysical applications in Greece are presented. The case studies are focused mostly in archeological site investigation, a field which is of high interest in Greece due to its reach historical heritage. The growing construction works in several parts of Greece as well as the increasing public interest in exploring and preserving cultural heritage lead to an increase of the application of nearsurface geophysics techniques as a preliminary investigation tool prior to engineering and archeological excavation works. Research efforts, presented in this work, are focused to extending and adapting standard nearsurface techniques in order to be made more effective for archaeological site investigation. The presented case studies involve not only standard field investigation procedures but also novel approaches such as the use of non-spike electrodes, efficient measuring and instrumentation strategies, unusual configurations and measurement environments. Overall it shown that efficient and state-of-art nearsurface geophysical techniques used for archaeological prospection purposes provide significant archaeological and structural information valuable for archeologists, engineers and conservation scientists.

우리나라의 「이동성 야생동물종의 보전에 관한 협약」 가입 여부에 대한 타당성 분석 (Feasibility Study on the Ratification of 'Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals(CMS)' to Korea)

  • The impact of Korea's joining the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals(CMS) was analyzed to examine its merits and faults as well as to discuss Korea's opportunities. Results of the analysis based on the agenda and decisions of the Conferences of the Parties, the parties performance, and other committees meetings over the last decades indicated that the affiliation of Korea into the CMS could provide various advantages and opportunities for Korea. First, Korea could upgrade its conservation activities regarding migratory species to the global aspects. Second, Korea could take initiatives for conservation of the migratory species in the Far East Asia. Third, Korea would have a better system in forecasting and problem-solving against the epidermic Avian Influenza through systematic cooperation with the CMS parties and other related international regimes. Finally, Korea will be in a better position to generate statistical data and to develop techniques to reduce the by-catches of the sharks and whales. Korea has already provided a fair and protective institutions for most of the migratory endangered species listed under Appendix I and II of the CMS. This implies that Korea may not require additional major changes to the basic acts and/or legislation. Joining the CMS may negatively impact on the fisheries and related businesses related to whales and sharks around the Ulsan and Pohang provinces. However, the obligation to protect whales and sharks demanded by the CMS is regarded as an acceptable article in Korea according to the analysis of the existing policies and scientific aspects. Nevertheless, if the joining the CMS should generate irreversible hardship for local people's livelihood and cultural aspects, Korea may ask for reservations on particular activities. Overall, we suggest that by joining the CMS, Korea could see various advantages and promotion in national policy.

방사선 투과촬영을 활용한 철불의 손상도 평가 및 제작기법 고찰 (Consideration of Making Techniques and Deterioration Assessment using Radiography for the Iron Buddha Statues)

  • 철원 도피안사 철조비로자나불좌상, 동해 삼화사 철조노사나불좌상, 평택 만기사 철조여래좌상은 통일신라에서 고려시대에 조성된 철불로서 균열, 탈락, 박리박락, 각종 오염물 등이 발생하였다. 방사선 투과촬영을 활용한 철불의 손상도 평가 결과, 철불 내부에서는 균열, 이격, 탈락, 주물공, 보수물질 등이 확인되었다. 그러나 철의 강도로 보아 외부로부터 큰 충격이 가해지지 않는 이상 현재의 상태를 유지할 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 철불의 제작에는 내형과 외형을 철심과 못을 사용하여 고정하였으며, 표면의 이음선과 양각된 명문, 따로 주조되어 결합된 손으로 보아 초중자주조법으로 조성되었을 것으로 판단된다.

감은사지서삼층석탑의 표면오염물 분석과 제거기술 (Analysis of Surface Contaminants and Removal Techniques on Three-story Stone Pagoda at the West of Gameunsaji Site)

  • 감은사지서삼층석탑의 표면오염물과 세척사례 조사 연구는 부재 표면에서 관찰되는 무기오염물의 성분분석과 오염물 제거 방법을 선정하기 위해 실시하였다. 표면오염물 조사는 육안관찰과 주사전자현미경, XRD를 이용하여 오염물의 상태를 파악하고 정성 정량분석을 통해 비교 분류하였다. 분석결과, 표면오염물은 철화합물이나 황화합물 등 화합물로 존재하며, 결정 형태는 원형, 타원형, 침상, 각형이 주를 이룬다. 오염물을 제거할 수 있는 방법을 검토한 결과, 미립재를 와류형식으로 분사하는 저압와류세척방법이 적당한 것으로 사료된다.

  • Paper cultural heritages usually experienced the chemical and the physical deterioration because of various factors including preservation environment and the property of their materials. General restoration technology for paper cultural heritages is the lining. The application of the lining paper and the lining technology has varied depending on researcher's experiences. Therefore, each lining material and technology must be evaluated to develop a standard guide for preservation and restoration of paper cultural heritages. To date, various analysis techniques using lining paper, in terms of their materials, have been applied to analyses of causes and condition of damages, but it is difficult to develop a standard restoration treatment method of paper cultural heritages because it varies by their material. The Hanf, is made frrr the mulberry, is generally used for the lining in Korea.edt is required that the cr, in terms properties and general properties of Hanf, is used for lining papers, are evaluated to develop a standard guide for their restoration.ed this study, the general properties of several lining papers(Hanf), especially dimensave bility, were evaluated as part of the standardization of lining papers. The result have varied depending on the pulping chemical and the manufacturers. the basis weight, thickness and tensale strength of lining papers is bigger the paper treated by natural ash than the paper treated by sodium carbonate.ed case of formation, folding endurance, and dimensave bility, the paper treated by sodium carbonate showed better properties than those of the paper treated by natural ash.

Study on the Gel Cleaning System for Removal of Poly (vinyl acetate) Fixative of the Mural Paintings of the Payathonzu Temple in Bagan, Myanmar (I) - Focusing on Properties and Removability of Gel Cleaners -

  • In the past, PVAc [poly(vinyl acetate)] was used as a fixative for the conservation of the murals in the murals of the Payathonzu temple located in Bagan, Myanmar. In this study, attention was paid to gel cleaning as a method for stably removing such PVAc fixatives. Based on the recent research trend related to the cleaning of murals in Bagan ruins, 3 types of gelling agents (Nevek®, Laponite®RD, Carbopol®980) and 2 types of organic solvents (Acetone, Dimethyl carbonate) were selected. Six types of gel cleaners were prepared by mixing gelling agents and organic solvents, and the properties and fixative removability of these cleaners were compared. As a result of confirming the properties of the prepared gel cleaners, the pH of the cleaners was all in the weak acidic to weakly alkaline range, which was a stable condition for mural application. Also, there was no difference in the viscosity of the cleaners depending on the type of solvent, but there was a difference depending on the type of gelling agent used. Regarding the weight loss ratio of PVAc, which is an indicator of removability, the exposure conditions of the gel cleaners, the boiling point of the solvent used, and the viscosity of the gelling agent acted as factors affecting. As a result of comparing the removability of gel cleaners, it was confirmed that the solvent's fixative solubility, the volatility of the solvent itself, and the solvent release control properties of the gelling agent had a great effect on the removability of the gel cleaners. In Part 2, the stability and the running applicability of the gel cleaners will be investigated by making mockup samples reflecting the properties of the materials and techniques used to produce the mural paintings in the Payathonzu Temple.

일본 오이타현 우스키 마애불상군의 재질특성 및 손상도 평가 (Deterioration Evaluation and Material Characteristics of the Usuki Stone Buddha Statues in Oita, Japan)

  • 일본 오이타현에 위치한 우스키 마애불상군은 12~14세기에 걸쳐 조성된 것으로 알려져 있으며 총 60여개의 석불군으로 이루어진 일본의 대표적인 석조문화재이다. 이 불상군을 이루는 기반암은 아소-4 화산쇄설암 층군에 포함되는 암회색 응회암이다. 이 석불군의 호키 I군과 후루조노를 대상으로 훼손지도를 작성한 결과, 호키 I군에서는 균열 약 121개, 염풍화로 인한 박락 19%, 흑색변색 5%, 생물학적 훼손 51%로 나타났고, 후루조노는 균열 약 48개, 염풍화로 인한 박락 24%, 생물학적 훼손 41%로 산출되었다. 암반에 균열이 집중적으로 분포하는 호키 I군에서는 사면안정성 평가를 통해 전체적으로 평면, 전도 및 쐐기파괴의 가능성이 확인되었다. 또한 초음파속도 측정을 수행한 결과, 애염명왕(기반암)은 1,520~2,794(평균 2,298)m/s를 보였으며, 동종암석으로 교체된 아미타여래좌상의 대좌(신부재)는 3,242~4,141(평균 3,813)m/s로 측정되어, 이들은 약 1,600m/s의 물성차이를 보였다. 따라서 적용 가능한 범위 내에서 균열, 공동, 탈락, 마모 및 박리박락 부분에 대한 보존처리 및 보강이 우선적으로 시행되어야 할 것이다.

진주 중천리 출토 인두형토기(人頭形土器)의 보존 (Conservation of The Human Shaped Terra Cotta Mask Excavated from Jungcheon-ri, Jinju)

  • 진주 금산면 중천리 공동주택 부지에서 국내 처음으로 출토된 인두형토기에 대한 전반적인 보존처리 과정을 소개하고자 한다. 유물에 대한 정확한 제작기법 등을 알아보기 위하여 X-ray 촬영과 육안조사를 실시하여 유물 상부(정수리)의 원형 투공(4개)은 삼각형을 이루며, 투공의 지름은 3개가 같고, 하나가 다르다는 것이 확인되었다. 코는 좁고 긴 사다리꼴 형태의 점토를 빚어 토기면에 부착하였으며, X-ray 촬영으로 입위·아래 단의 원형 홈 깊이(윗단: 10 mm, 아랫단: 6 mm)를 확인하였다. 보존처리에 사용되는 각종 접착제나 복원제는 가역성이 있는 재료를 선택하여 접합·복원하였다. 인두형토기는 출토된 주변에서 동물뼈를 매장한 제사유구가 분포하고 있는 점과 정수리나 귀, 치아 부분에 무엇인가 장식을 하기 위한 홈이 있는 점으로 볼 때, 집단의 의례 행위와 관련된 것으로 학계에서는 추정한다. 또한 인두형토기가 발굴에서부터 과학적인 보존처리를 거쳐 복원되기까지의 과정을 '테마전시'로 기획하여, 발굴된 이후에 어떤 과정을 거쳐 전시가 이루어지는지에 대한 정보를 관람객에게 제공하고자 하였다.

호소수질정화공법의 평가를 위한 수질모형의 개발 및 적용 (Development and Application of a Water Quality Model to Assess Water Purification Techniques for Lakes and Reservoirs)

  • Excessive outflow of pollutant loads resulting from rapid industrialization has unbalanced the water ecosystem, deteriorating the water quality environment severely. Therefore, measures for improving the water quality are necessary to maintain clean reservoir water and restore water-friendly spaces. A water quality model which is capable of simulating daily reservoir water quality was developed. The model had been applied to Masan reservoir and Wanggung reservoir in Korea. The model appeared to be satisfactory in representing the trend of water quality variations by comparing measured and simulated results. The model had been also applied to assess water purification techniques such as dredged pool, floating island and vegetation purification system. The model was considered to assess the effect of water purification techniques on reservoir water quality improvement. The results of water quality simulation for lake water purification techniques showed that a large facility would be needed to meet the targeted water quality of the reservoir when only one technique is applied. To effectively improve the quality of the polluted reservoir water, it is therefore recommended that pollutant sources should first be controlled, and a combination of the water purification techniques applied to make the utmost use of their secondary effects such as conservation of the reservoir volume capacity, establishment of a recreation space, promotion of bio-diversity, and improvement of the lake landscape.

생태계의 보전·복원을 고려한 일본의 환경친화적 도로건설 기술 사례 연구 (Sustainable Road Construction Techniques with Special Emphasis on the Conservation and Restoration of Ecosystem in Japan)

  • This study focuses on the technology to reduce destruction and damages of an ecosystem in the process of road construction. The authors investigated the ecological conservation activities and restoration technology which were applied to the construction of 2 bridges in Japan. The key results are as following : First, the most important thing in constructing eco-road was the linear design. Second, we need to adopt the environmental construction forms and materials to the design of structure. Finally, we have to use environment-friendly methods for the sake of the ecosystem at the real construction stage. Adopting those technologies has at least a few merits. First, we can achieve out goals : conservation and restoration in the local habitat. Second, we can save money instead of building a eco-bridge. There is a further advantage which makes it possible to develop environment-friendly technologies than before by drawing developers' attention.
