A range of techniques have been being developed to remove the volatile organic compounds from paining processes. High temperature decomposition of harmful VOCs using arc plasma has recently been proposed, and this work analyzed the extreme hot process by computer-aided fluid dynamics prior to the reactor design. Numerical simulations utilized the conservation equations of mass and momentum. The simulation showed that the fluid flowed down along the inner surface of the centrifugal reactor by forming intensive spiral trajectories. Although the high temperature gas generated by plasma influences the bottom of the reactor, no heat transfer in radial direction appeared. The decomposition efficiency of a typical VOCs, toluene, was found to be a maximum of 67% across the reactor, which was similar to the value (approximately 70%) for the lab-scale test.
The improvement of energy conservation mandates decrease consumption of fossil fuels and minimize negative impacts on the environment, which originates from large cooling and heating demand. The absorption heat pump technology has a large potential for energy saving in this respect. Adsorption heat pump is a means to upgrade waste heat without addition of extra thermal energy. The increase of absorbed amount is of great importance for absorption heat pump cycle. In this study, in order to improve the performance of absorber, the absorbers of two different types have been investigated using methanol-glycerine as a working fluid. The former was tangential feed of liquid phase without spiral tube in the absorber and the latter was with spiral tube in the absorber. The latter was found to be more effective in enhancing the mass and heat transfer to increase the absorption performance.

This paper deals with the FEM analysis of nonlinear sloshing of incompressible, invicid and irrotational flow in two dimensional rectangular tank. We use laplace equation based on potential theory as governing equation. For large amplitude sloshing motion, kinematic and dynamic free surface conditions derived from Bernoulli equation are applied. This problem is solved by FEM using 9-node elements. For the time integration and accurate velocity calculation, we introduce predictor-corrector time marching scheme and least square method. Also, numerical stability in tracking of free surface is obtained by direct calculation of free surface location to time variation. Numerical results of sloshing induced by harmonic excitations, while comparing with those of linear theory and references, prove the accuracy and stability. After verification of our program, we analyze sloshing response characteristics to the fluid height and the excitation amplitude.
Ecotourism has surged from conflicts between negative impacts of mass tourism and environmental issues. As an alternative tourism, ecotourism compromises extensively environmental, economic, educational, and cultural concerns. Ecotourism can be defined as environment-based tourism that ensures sustainable growth and development through conservation of natural and human environment, promotion of regional economy, and provision of tourism service in natural environment areas. Ecotourism should consider two key challenges; an effective means that may protect local economy through tourist-based income and improvement of residential circumstances, and role as leisure space that can improve tourist's experiences. The purpose of this study was to summarize ecotourism concepts through literature search and develop an ecotourism planning framework for Korean rural communities. In addition, developed planning framework in this study was applied to Jeongdori area, Wandogun, Korea as a case study in order to analyze its feasibility. A trial application in Jeongdori area demonstrated a possibility that ecotourism planning framework can be successfully adopted to a wide range of Korean rural communities. To ensure objectivity of framework, systematic case studies must be done in the future.
Plant micropropagation techniques include bud cultures using apical or axillary buds, organogenesis through callus culture or adventitious bud induction, and somatic embryogenesis. In Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI), the first tissue culture trial in woody plant was initiated from the bud culture of hybrid poplars (Populus alba x P. glandulosa) in 1978. Since then several mass propagation techniques have developed from conifer and hardwood species, resulting in allowing practical application to Poplars, Birches and some oak species. In addition, useful micropropagation and genetic resources conservation techniques were established in some rare and endangered tree species including Abeliophyllum distichum. Among various in vitro propagation techniques, somatic embryogenesis is known to be the most efficient plant regeneration system. Since the first somatic embryo induction was reported in Tilia amurensis by KFRI in 1986, various protocols for direct or indirect somatic embryogenesis systems have developed in conifer and hardwood species including Larix leptolepis, Pinus rigida x P. taeda F1, Kalopanax septemlobus and Liliodendron tulipifera, etc. However, most of these technologies have been developed using juvenile tissues, i.e. immature zygotic embryos or mature embryos. Therefore it has been difficult to directly application to tree breeding program due to their unproven genetic background. Recently remarkable progresses and new approaches have been achieved in mature tree somatic embryogenesis. In this article we reviewed several micropropagation techniques, which have been mainly developed by KFRI and recent international progresses.

In this research paper, we investigated the cryogenic line chill down characteristics of liquefied natural gas (LNG). A numerical analysis model was established and verified so that it can calculate the precise cooling characteristics of cryogenic fluid for the stable and safe utilization especially such as LNG and liquid hydrogen. The numerical modeling was programmed by C++ as an one-dimensional homogeneous model. The thermohydraulic cooling process was simulated using mass, momentum, energy conservation equations and appropriate heat transfer correlations. In this process, the relevant heat transfer correlations for nuclear boiling, transition boiling, film boiling, and single-phase heat transfer that can predict the experimental results were implemented. To verify the numerical modeling, several cryogenic line chill down experiments using LNG were conducted at the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) LNG and Cryogenic Technology Center.
It is well documented that physiological and nutritional condition of wintering birds is strongly related to migration success to breeding sites, and also breeding success. However, how abiotic factors during winter affect the migration and breeding successes still remains unclear. Thus, this study developed a dynamic-state-dependent model for wintering life-history to identify the potential impact on the life-history, success to breeding site and breeding success of wintering birds, which are related to temperature fluctuation, interspecific competition and human disturbance at the wintering sites. To find the best-fit-model, we referred to the existing research data on wintering ecology of Red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) in Cheolwon, Korea, which is well documented as a long-term wintering study. Our model predicted that the higher temperature fluctuation and a higher rate of human disturbance are negatively related to migration success to breeding sites and their fitness, ultimately breeding success via changing of proportion in resource allocation (for e. g., lower energy compensation or higher level of stress accumulation). Particularly, the rate of body mass compensation after arrival at wintering sites may be accelerated when there are less temperature fluctuations and a lower rate of human disturbance. In addition, the rate of interspecific competition sharing the wintering foraging sites is negatively related to the rate of body mass compensation. Consequently, we discussed the conservation strategies of wintering birds based on the outcomes of the model.

Applicability of the pressure gradient method which is formulated based on pressure gradient is verified against turbulent flow analysis. In the pressure gradient method, pressure gradient instead of pressure itself is obtained using continuity constraint. Since correct pressure gradient is found only when mass conservation is satisfied, pressure gradient method can reflect physics of flow field properly The pressure gradient method is formulated with semi-staggered grid system which locates each primitive variables on the same grid point but evaluates pressure gradient in-between. This grid system ensures easy programming and reflection of correct physics in analysis. For verifying applicability of this method, the pressure gradient method is applied to turbulent flow analysis with low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model. Turbulent flows include fully developed channel flow, backward-facing step flow, and conical diffuser flow. Prediction results show that the pressure gradient method can be applied to turbulent flow analysis. However, the pressure gradient method requires somewhat long computation time. Proper way to find optimum under-relaxation factor, $\gamma$, is also need to be developed.
The flora of the Odaesan National Park, located in the areas of Pyongchang-gun, Myongju-gun and Inje-gun, Kangwon-do was surveyed. Field works was undertaken five times between March to October, 1995. The total number of vascular plants in the Odaesan National Park was surveyed was 512 taxa; 87 families, 277 genera, 435 species, 68 varieties, 2 subspecies, and 7 forms. The vascular plants were classified as 459 taxa, 85 families, 255 genera, 389 species, 61 varieties, 2 subspecies and 7 forms in Odaesan, 309 taxa 73 families, 194 genera, 257 species, 45varieties, and 5 forms in Hwangbyongsan and 151 taxa, 60 families, 115 genera, 138 species, 12 varieties and 1 form in Sogumgang area. Also this study recorded 35 taxa of Korean rare and endangered plant species. Some of the habitats of rare and endangered plant species are located in the vicinity from the nature trails. Conservation measures, at both the habitat and species levels, are urgently needed to mitigate against destructive human activities, such as an illegal mass collecting and trampling.

Electro-Mechanical Ignition Safety Device(EMISD) for solid rocket motor is designed and manufactured. The EMISD utilizes a true rotary solenoid for arming mechanism and an electric squib(initiator) for generating ignition energy. In order to prove the ignition capability of the EMISD, 10-cc Closed Bomb Test(CBT) is performed, which measures the pressure built by high temperature and high pressure gas generated by operating EMISD. The pressure built in the free volume of 10-cc closed bomb and the opening time of the ignition gas outlet are calculated using one dimensional gas dynamic model which is composed of the ideal gas equation and mass-energy conservation equation. Comparing the test result with model prediction, it is realized that the pressure built in the free volume of closed bomb due to the firing of EMISD, has the efficiency ratio of about 34%.
