  • In this study, the performance of an automobile heat storage system using PCM is numerically simulated. For the analysis of system performance. The phase-change of the PCM and the transient forced convective heat transfer for the HTF are considered simultaneously as a conjugate problem. The phase-change behavior is effectively analyzed using a concept of thermal resistance. From the correlations of phase change rate and heat transfer due to the variations of flow rate of HTF around PCM, the automobile heat storage system performance is predicted. The present results amy be used as the fundamental information for the design of automobile heat storage system.

  • The problem of natural convection from a vertical fin is solved by coupling the thermal diffusion equation in the fin to the constitutive equations of the ambient medium involving the radiation of the medium. The analysis is accomplished by employing an integral method. The governing equations for the problem are solved by shooting method based on the Runge-Kutta Scheme at Pr= 0.7. For the range of values of the fin parameter and the radiation-conduction parameter in the analysis, the numerical results show that the radiation effects play an important role in the heat transfer and enhance the heat transfer.

  • This study explores the improvement of storage environment of igloo-shaped magazine using forced ventilation. Conjugate heat transfer analysis of forced convection and conduction are performed to calculate the flow, temperature, and relative humidity field in igloo-shaped magazine. Through the conjugate heat transfer analysis, the effects of inlet vent, volume flow rates of jet, and jet angles on the condensation and relative humidity are numerically investigated. The area of condensation in igloo-shaped magazine and relative humidity at the surface of ammunitions are then calculated.

  • Cooling characteristics of a parallel channel with protruding heat sources using convection and conduction heat transfer are studied numerically. A two-dimensional model has been developed for numerical prediction of transient, compressible, viscous, laminar flow, and conjugate heat transfer between parallel plates with uniform block heat sources. The finite volume method is used to solve the problem. The assembly consists of two channels formed by two covers and one printed circuit board which has three uniform heat source blocks. Six different cooling methods are considered to find out the most efficient cooling method in a given geometry and heat sources. The velocity and temperature fields of cooling medium, the temperature distribution along the block surface, and the maximum temperature in each block are obtained. The results are compared to examine the cooling characteristics of the different cooling methods.

  • In the study, a numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of an inverter system inside a panel for three locations (bottom, middle and top). A conjugate heat transfer is simulated using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code since the heat transfer through the surrounding panel walls is important. It is shown that the heat flux through the left wall, which is important for the safety of the electronic equipment, is the biggest when the inverter is located at bottom. On the other hand, the heat flux through the left wall is negligible when the inverter at middle or top. It is also found that the heat flux to the surrounding walls is the lowest when the inverter is at middle.

  • The present study numerically investigates the natural convection heat transfer in a 2-D square cavity containing a centered heat conducting body. Special emphasis is given to the influences of the Rayleigh number, the dimensionless conducting body size, and the ratio of the thermal diffusivity of the body to that of the fluid on the natural convection heat transfer in overall concerned region. The analysis reveals that the fluid flow and heat transfer processes are governed by all of them. Results for isotherms, vector plots and wall Nusselt numbers are reported for Pr = 0.71 and relatively wide ranges of the other parameters. Heat transfer across the cavity, in comparison to that in the absence of a body, are enhanced (reduced) in general by a body with a thermal diffusivity ratio less (greater) than unity. It is also found that the heat transfer attains a minimum as the body size is increased with a thermal diffusivity ratio greater than unity.

  • The wall film-wise condensation plays an important role in the heat transfer processes of heat exchangers, refrigerators, and air conditioner. In the field of nuclear engineering, steam condensation is often utilized in safety systems to remove the core decay heat under both transient and accident conditions. In particular, passive containment cooling system (PCCS), are designed to ensure containment safety under severe accident conditions. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) scale analysis has been conducted to calculate the heat transfer rate of the PCCS. However, despite the increase in computing power, there are challenges in the long-term transient simulation of containment using CFD scale codes. In this study, a heat structure coupling between the CFD and system analysis codes was performed to efficiently analyze PCCS. In addition, the component unstructured program for interfacial dynamics (CUPID) was improved to analyze the condensation behavior of ternary gas mixtures. Thereafter, the condensation heat transfer on the primary side was calculated using the improved CUPID and CFD code, whereas that on the secondary side was simulated using MARS. Both the coupled codes were validated against the CONAN facility database. Finally, conjugate heat transfer simulations with wall condensation in the presence of non-condensable gases were appropriately performed.

  • Conjugate heat transfer analysis was performed to investigate the flow and cooling performance of the high pressure turbine nozzle of gas turbine engine. The CHT code was verified by comparison between CFD results and experimental results of C3X vane. The combination of k-${\omega}$ based SST turbulence model and transition model was used to solve the flow and thermal field of the fluid zone and the material property of CMSX-4 was applied to the solid zone. The turbine nozzle has two internal cooling channels and each channel has a complex cooling configurations, such as the film cooling, jet impingement, pedestal and rib turbulator. The parabolic temperature profile was given to the inlet condition of the nozzle to simulate the combustor exit condition. The flow characteristics were analyzed by comparing with uncooled nozzle vane. The Mach number around the vane increased due to the increase of coolant mass flow flowed in the main flow passage. The maximum cooling effectiveness (91 %) at the vane surface is located in the middle of pressure side which is effected by the film cooling and the rib turbulrator. The region of the minimum cooling effectiveness (44.8 %) was positioned at the leading edge. And the results show that the TBC layer increases the average cooling effectiveness up to 18 %.

  • In this paper, the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were solved to find out the optimal location of electrical heat trace for anti-freeze of water inside the pipe for fire protection. Since the conduction equation of pipe was coupled with the natural convection of water, the analysis of conjugate heat transfer was conducted. A commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on SIMPLE-type algorithm was used for investigating the unsteady flows and temperature distributions in water region. From the numerical experiments, the isotherms and the vector fields in water region were obtained. Furthermore, it was found that the lowest part of the pipe cross-section was an optimal position of electrical heat trace assuming the constant thermal expansion coefficient of water since the minimum temperature of the water with the position is higher than those with the other positions.
