  • Asynchronous transfer mode is flexible to support multimedia communication services using asynchronous time-sharing and statistical multimedia techniques to the existing data communication area, ATM ABR service controls network traffic using feedback information on the network congestion situation in order to guarantee the demanded service qualities and the available cell rates, In this paper we apply the control method using queue length prediction to the formation of feedback information for more efficient ABR traffic control. If backward node receive the longer delayed feedback information on the impending congestion, the switch can be already congested from the uncontrolled arriving traffic and the fluctuation of queue length can be inefficiently high in the continuing time intervals, The feedback control method proposed in this paper predicts the queue length in the switch using the slope of queue length prediction function and queue length changes in time-series, The predicted congestion information is backward to the node, NLMS and neural network are used as the predictive control functions, and they are compared from performance on the queue length prediction. Simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed method compared to the feedback control method without the prediction, Therefore, we conclude that the efficient congestion and stability of the queue length controls are possible using the prediction scheme that can resolve the problems caused from the longer delays of the feedback information.

  • Bridge behavior under passing traffic loads has been studied for the past 50 years. This paper presents how to model congestion on bridges and how the maximum dynamic stress of bridges change during the passing of moving vehicles. Most current research is based on mid-span dynamic effects due to traffic load and most bridge codes define a factor called the dynamic load allowance (DLA), which is applied to the maximum static moment under static loading. This paper presents an algorithm to solve the governing equation of the bridge as well as the equations of motions of two real European trucks with different speeds, simultaneously. It will be shown, considering congestion in eight case studies, the maximum dynamic stress and how far from the mid-span it occurs during the passing of one or two trucks with different speeds. The congestion effect on the maximum dynamic stress of bridges can make a significant difference in the magnitude. By finite difference method, it will be shown that where vehicle speeds are considerably higher, for example in the case of railway bridges which have more than one railway line or in the case of multiple lane highway bridges where congestion is probable, current designing codes may predict dynamic stresses lower than actual stresses; therefore, the consequences of a full length analysis must be used to design safe bridges.

  • PURPOSES : Expressways experience chronic and recurring congestion, especially during weekends and holidays, because of the increased demands for leisure-related travel. The alternatives to solve chronic and recurring congestion may be three-fold: (1) physical expansion of expressway capacities, (2) road pricing, and (3) temporal and spatial distribution of traffic demands. Among these, the third alternative may be the most cost-effective method for the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) that can be achieved by using the existing ITS infrastructure. METHODS : KEC initiated a pilot study in which the traffic on congested expressways was managed by providing traffic condition information (i.e., travel times) of neighboring national highways for taking detours via variable message signs (VMS). This study aimed to estimate the detour rate, and the two pilot studies on Seohaean and Yeongdong expressways yielded many benefits. RESULTS : It was revealed that the total length of congestion segments decreased by 7.8 km, and the average travel speed increased by 5.3 km/h. CONCLUSIONS : Based on these findings, it was concluded that the propagation of detour information via VMSs during congestion hours can help reduce congestion on expressways and increase the benefits of the entire network.

  • Consider a job shop that is modelled as an open queueing network of the Jackson(l957) type. All work stations in the shop have the same number of parallel servers. Two problems are studied : the loading of stations and the assignment of servers, which are represented by loading and assingment vectors, respectively. Ma jorization and arrangement orderings are established to order, respectively, the loading and the assignment vectors. It is shown that reducing the loading vector under ma jorizat ion or increasing the assignment vector under arrangement ordering will reduce the congestion in the shop in terms of reducing the total number of jobs(in the sense of likelihood ratio ordering), the maximum queue length(in the sense of stochastic ordering), and the queue-length vector( in the sense of stochastic majorization). The results can be used to supprot production planning in certain job shops, and to aid the desing of storage capacity. • In this paper, we propose the design of active queue management (AQM) control system using the self-recurrent wavelet neural network (SRWNN). By regulating the queue length close to reference value, AQM can control the congestions in TCP network. The SRWNN is designed to perform as a feedback controller for TCP dynamics. The parameters of network are tunes to minimize the difference between the queue length of TCP dynamic model and the output of SRWNN using gradient-descent method. We evaluate the performances of the proposed AQM approach through computer simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a robustness sensitivity index (RSI) of highway networks to analyze the effect of congestion in a specific section on the entire highway. The newly proposed RSI is defined as the change in the total mileage of the transportation network per extended unit length when the length of a particular section is extended. When the RSI value is large, traffic congestion in the section has a worse effect on the entire network than in other sections. The existing network robustness index (NRI) simply observes changes in transportation networks with and without specific sections, but the RSI proposed in this study is a kind of performance indicator that allows quantitative analysis of the ripple effect of the entire network according to the degree of congestion in a specific section. While changing the degree of congestion in a particular section, it is possible to calculate how the traffic volume increases, decreases, and the size and location of the congestion section change. This analysis proves the superiority of RSI as it cannot be analyzed with NRI. Various properties of RSI are analyzed using data from the domestic highway network. In addition, using the RSI concept, it is shown that the ripple effect on other sections in which a change in the degree of congestion of a specific section occurs can be analyzed.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of on-line departure time-based link travel time estimates. For this, accuracy (i.e. estimation error) and timeliness (i.e. degree of time lag) are proposed as MOE of the quality of on-line link travel time estimates. Then the relationship between quality of link travel time estimates and link length and level of congestion is analyzed. It was found that there is trade-off between the accuracy and timeliness of link travel time estimates. The estimation error was modeled to consist of two components: one is systematic error and the other is mean square error which reflects level of congestion. further, time lag was again segmented into three parts for the analysis purpose. There are minimum one, congestion-related one, and update interval-related one. From the real-world data using AVI system, it was revealed that regardless of the link length and level of congestion, 10 minutes of time lag occurs in general.

  • In Pusan Harbour, new port development projects are implemented such as the Extended Terminal adjacent to the Gamman Terminal, Pusan New Port, the Navy $\bigcirc$$\bigcirc$ piers, etc. which will require new marine traffic environments in the Passage I of Pusan Harbour. Specially, the turning basin of the Extended Terminal adjacent to the Gamman Terminal has been designed to overlay the Passage I of Pusan Harbour, which will interrupt the inbound traffic flow and the results will be worried to decrease the efficiency of port operation. Therefore, this paper will be aimed to evaluate the traffic congestion in the Pusan Passage I due to the opening of new ports within Pusan Harbour in 2006 and 2011 by using computer simulation based the queueing theory.

  • In mobile ad hoc networks, most of on demand routing protocols such as DSR and AODV do not deal with traffic load during the route discovery procedure. To achieve load balancing in networks, many protocols have been proposed. However, existing load balancing schemes do not consider the remaining available buffer size of the interface queue, which still results in buffer overflows by congestion in a certain node which has the least available buffer size in the route. To solve this problem, we propose a load balancing protocol called Dynamic Congestion Aware Routing Protocol (DCAR) which monitors the remaining buffer length of all nodes in routes and excludes a certain congested node during the route discovery procedure. We also propose two buffer threshold values to select an optimal route selection metric between the traffic load and the minimum hop count. Through simulation study, we compare DCAR with other on demand routing protocols and show that the proposed protocol is more efficient when a network is heavily loaded.

  • In Pusan port, the studies, which analysis container cargo volumes by using forecasting methods and research about container logistics system, etc., have been continuously performed. But, in Pusan port, this study on an evaluation of traffic congestion has been scarcely performed until now. Especially, when changing and extending a berth, and constructing a new port, it is very important to examine this field. And it should be considered. Thus, this paper aims to analysis the effect of ship traffic condition in 2011, to evaluate marine traffic congestion, according to changing ship traffic volumes in Pusan port. To analysis it, we used simulation method and examined the results
