Recently, doctors and researchers are establishing relationships with interested parties from companies, research institutes, health care institutions, and academic journals, instead of conducting independent medical care or research work. They may have multiple interests as an advisor or a shareholder in the relevant company. Such a situation can foster a conflict of interest when their interests influence one's decision or judgment. Conflict of interest is an extremely important issue because it can infringe the integrity of research, endanger subjects or patients, pose a risk to the public, and deteriorate public perception of science. This brief review explores the definition, examples, and solutions to conflict of interest.
University spinoff is a type of high-quality tech-startup that has high level of growth potential and ripple effects. Thus, the Korean government has been making continuous efforts to vitalize university spinoffs. However, existing legislation does not take into account clear definition of university spinoff as well as conflict of interests among its main agents (university, professor, graduate student, etc.). As a result, there exist various types of conflict of interests related to the university spinoff in Korea and that hinder activating university spinoffs. In this study, therefore, we reviewed studies of university spinoff and clarified types of conflict of interests related to university spinoff. Taken together, we diagnosed problems of university spinoff in Korea and proposed plans to vitalize it.
This paper examines issues concerning conflicts between arbitral awards and public interests, particularly with respect to economic sanctions. Sanctions have been widely used by political entities, such as States and organizations, as means to promote public interests and to resolve cross-border disputes. In particular, economic sanctions have been increasingly more visible in recent years due to the accelerating fragmentation of the international communities, and their magnitude and range of the impacts have grown accordingly. For example, the U.S. and the EU have imposed economic sanctions on Russia and related persons in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The U.S. recently re-introduced a comprehensive economic sanction on Iran. One of the notable impacts of the sanctions, particularly economic sanctions, is that on international arbitration. Sanctions are essentially built on the notion of the protection of public interests, and public interests are some of the few grounds upon which recognition and enforceability or arbitral awards may be rejected. However, jurisprudence on such conflict between sanctions and arbitral awards have not been sufficiently addressed in Korea because court case and administrative decision records on this conflict have not been sufficiently accumulated. In this regard, this paper begins with offering a survey of the concept of public interests, economic and trade sanctions, arbitral awards and their enforceability, and the relationships between them. It then examines the mechanism upon which public interests, trade and economic sanctions may lead certain arbitral awards unenforceable. Next, the paper suggests judiciaries' balanced approach toward the public interests protected by trade and economic sanctions and the predictability and fairness in the enforcement of arbitral awards. Finally, this paper concludes with the methods of the implementation of such balanced approach.
As organizations have come to be more complex and diverse, management has come to spend an increasing proportion of its time and efforts in handling organization conflict. Moreover, organizational conflict problems are often not recognized until the balance of interests is destroyed or a radical organizational change such as BPR takes place. Once an organizational conflict arises, however, it reduces corporate synergy seriously, leading to organizational ineffectiveness. Therefore, it is important to identify the cause of organizational conflict in advance and resolve it based on the proper diagnosis as early as possible lest it should undermine the organizational effectiveness. We propose a method that facilitates diagnosing potential organizational conflict and determining appropriate strategy to the conflict, based on the analysis of cognitive maps. To support the application of the method in the real world context, a computerized tool is introduced. The working procedures of the method and the features of the tool are illustrated with their application to the real case of the cable TV home shopping company.
"Conflict of Interest(COI)" is defined as a situation where a person or an institution is involved in multiple interests, and an interest is against the others. COI in medical researches should well addressed and managed in order not to breach the integrity of the research. Numbers of methods have been introduced to manage the COI. In this article, the concept of COI and its application to medical researches is reviewed and the methods evading COI are introduced.

Expert systems using uncertain and ambiguous knowledge are not of the recent interests about uncertainty problem for performing inference similar to the decision making of a human expert. Human factors on rule-based systems often involve uncertain information. Expert systems had been used the methods of conflict resolution in a rule conflict situation, but this methods not properly solved the rule conflict. If a human expert appends a new rule to an original rule base, the rule base rightly causes a rule conflict. In this paper, the problem of rule conflict is regarded as one in which uncertainty of information is fundamentally involved. In the reduction of problem with uncertainty, we propose an enhanced rule ordering method, which improve the rule ordering method using Dempster-Shafer theory. We also propose a combinative index, which involve human factors of experts decision making.

This study analyzed the effect of related party transactions on the corporate value of Korean firms using panel data regression analysis. We tested the efficient transaction hypothesis and conflict of interests hypothesis which concern related party transactions. Five types of related party transactions were considered, including long term supply contracts, assets and business transfers, affiliate loans, equity investment, and credit offerings. If related party transactions were conducted for the purpose of enhancing corporate efficiency, results would have a positive effect on firm value. If related party transactions were conducted for the purpose of private profits of the controlling shareholders, the results would show a negative effect on firm value. Results were as follows. Firstly, it is confirmed that affiliate loans, equity investment, and credit offerings had negative effects on firm value. This implies that these types of related party transactions used by controlling shareholders for the purpose of their private profit, which supports the conflict of interests hypothesis. Secondly, it was found that long term supply contracts and assets and business transfers had no effect on firm value.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the tendency and characteristics in armed conflict in post-Cold War era on the basis of Uppsala conflict data program(UCDP) datasets. The collapse of bipolarity and the end of cold War proved a watershed in the dynamics of international conflict. The major shift in the nature of conflict has been away from interstate conflict, leaving intrastate conflict. Major powers have acted carefully against each other and been willing to understand the interests of other to avoid military confrontation and crash. As the means of termination for armed conflict, there is a stronger emphasis on the peace settlement like peace agreement and ceasefire agreement than military victory. Many intrastate conflicts become internationalized, through the involvement of diaspora communities, or regionalized through a spillover effect into neighboring countries. Since the end of the Cold War, the UN has taken a much more active role in conflict management and conflict resolution.
