Internally Confined Hollow RC(ICH RC) column consisted of concrete, transverse reinforcement, longitudinal reinforcement, and inner tube. It had good strength and ductility by core concrete was become triaxial confining state with transverse reinforcement and inner tube. There were two confining stress as external confining stress and internal confining stress in an ICH RC column. While external confining stress was researched by former researchers, internal confining stress has not researched. In this paper, confining stress of both Hollow RC column and ICH RC column was investigated using FEA program. Relation between theoretical confining stress and internal confining stress was drawn by analysis results. Modified failure condition equations of inner tube were suggested to base on failure condition equations of inner tube by former researcher. When thickness of inner tube was calculated by modified equations, it could be economic because thickness of inner tube was reduced 50% compared with former researcher equations in order to same confining stress.
Gel-type biopolymers have recently been introduced as environmentally friendly soil binders and have shown substantial strengthening effects in laboratory experimental programs. Although the strengthening effects of biopolymer-treated sands have been verified in previous direct shear tests and uniaxial compression tests, there has been no attempt to examine shear behavior under different confining stress conditions. This study therefore aimed to investigate the strengthening effects of biopolymer-treated sand using laboratory triaxial testing with a focus on confining pressures. Three representative confining pressure conditions (${\sigma}_3=50kPa$, 100 kPa, and 200 kPa) were tested with varying biopolymer contents ($m_{bp}/m_s$) of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0%, respectively. Based on previous studies, it was assumed that biopolymer-treated sand is susceptible to hydraulic conditions, and therefore, the experiments were conducted in both a hydrated xanthan gum condition and a dehydrated xanthan gum condition. The results indicated that the shear resistance was substantially enhanced and there was a demonstrable increase in cohesion as well as the friction angle when the biopolymer film matrix was comprehensively developed. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the feasibility of the biopolymer treatment will remain valid under the confining pressure conditions used in this study because the resisting force of the biopolymer-treated soil was higher than that in the untreated condition, regardless of the confining pressure.

A discrete element approach is used to investigate the effects of confining stress on the shear behaviour of joint's bridge area. A punch-through shear test is used to model the concrete cracks under different shear and confining stresses. Assuming a plane strain condition, special rectangular models are prepared with dimension of $75mm{\times}100mm$. Within the specimen model and near its four corners, four equally spaced vertical notches of the same depths are provided so that the central portion of the model remains intact. The lengths of notches are 35 mm. and these models are sequentially subjected to different confining pressures ranging from 2.5 to 15 MPa. The axial load is applied to the punch through the central portion of the model. This testing and models show that the failure process is mostly governed by the confining pressure. The shear strengths of the specimens are related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. The shear behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of induced shear bands which are increased by increasing the confining pressure while the cracks propagation lengths are decreased. The failure stress and the crack initiation stress both are increased due to confining pressure increase. As a whole, the mechanisms of brittle shear failure changes to that of the progressive failure by increasing the confining pressure.

A suction-saturation control technique based on flow pump system was developed to investigate hydraulic properties in unsaturated soils. The flow pump system is designed based on the principle of the axis-translation technique and triaxial equipment, and gives the suction-time and suction-saturation curves, the primary relationship needed for interpreting the response of unsaturated soils and link between theory and the material properties in unsaturated soil mechanics. Using the suction-saturation control technique, suction-time relationship and soil-water retention curve (SWRC) during hydraulic hysteresis were investigated with different net confining pressures and porosities. Three types of soils-two sands and a silt were used in this paper. This paper showed the effect of the hysteresis on the SWRC due to different net confining pressures and porosities. This means that a careful decision must be made as to which condition is to be modeled, since the delicate difference of the conditions in physical modeling can cause the different experimental output.
As a critical material in very/high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, graphite material directly affects the safety of the reactor core structures. Owing to the complex structures of graphite material in reactors, the material typically undergoes complex stress states. It is, therefore, necessary to study its mechanical properties, failure modes, and strength criteria under complex stress states so as to provide guidance for the core structure design. In this study, compressive failure tests were performed for graphite material under the condition of different confining pressures, and the effects of confining pressure on the triaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus of graphite material were studied. More specifically, graphite material based on the fracture surfaces and fracture angles, the graphite specimens were found to exhibit four types of failure modes, i.e., tension failure, shear-tension failure, tension-shear failure and shear failure, with increasing confining pressure. In addition, the Mohr strength envelope of the graphite material was obtained, and different strength criteria were compared. It showed that the parabolic Mohr-Coulomb criterion is more suitable for the strength evaluation for the graphite material.

Confined concrete has enhanced strength and ductility compared with unconfined strength. Cause of these merits of confined concrete, many researches have been performed for confining effects of concrete and been studied in many fields. Although many researches about concrete confined by FRP sheets have been studied recently, it is difficult to apply concrete confined by FRP in real structures because FRP is a brittle material. In this study, the enhanced strength and ductility of concrete which is confined by steel tubes or steel plates were investigated. Fifty one specimens were tested and each specimen has different confining condition. Test results showed enhanced ductility and strength of confined concrete and concrete models were suggested under various confining conditions by regression of experimental data.

In this study, shear strength characteristics of the Nak-Dong river sand in Taegu area are investigated by triaxial compression test, considering shear strain control velocity, relative density, and confining pressure. The results from Lade model and Modified Lade model are compared with the measured value in the laboratory test. The results by the change of shear strain control velocity, relative density, and confining pressure are as follows; 1) The stress limit, which can be Coulomb's law about the Nak-Dong river sand, have ranged 120~200 kpa at 0.08%/min and 120~150 kpa at 0.5%/min. These limits are smaller than that of the calcareous sand and the well-graded, quartz sand. 2) The parameters needed to Lade model and Modified Lade model are much affected by the strain control velocity and the relative density. Consequently, in the field, it is important to use parameters aptly after accurately understanding both the loading condition and subsoil condition. 3) Overall, the principal stress ratio obtained from constitutive model equations is not affected by the control velocity, but both the relative density and confining pressure affect the result of constitutive model equations. Consequently, the study on the various conditions about the relative density and confining pressure is needed to accurately predict the stress-strain behavior on the Nak-Dong river sand. 4) For the range of the used confining pressure in the study, the Lade model shows better agreements with the measured value than the Modified Lade model, comparing the measured value with the principal stress ratio at failure and the internal friction angle of failure envelope obtained from the Lade model and Modified Lade model.
Rate-dependent mechanical response of sand, subjected to loading of medium to high strain rate range, is of interest for several civilian and military applications. Such rate-dependent response can vary significantly based on the initial density state of the sand, applied confining pressure, considered strain rate range, drainage condition and sand morphology. A numerical study has been carried out employing a recently proposed visco-plastic constitutive model to explore the rate-dependent mechanical behaviour of Toyoura sand under drained triaxial loading condition. The model parameters have been calibrated using the experimental data on Toyoura sand available in published literature. Under strain rates higher than a reference strain rate, the simulation results are found to be in good agreement with the experimentally observed characteristic shearing behaviour of sand, which includes increased shear strength, pronounced post-peak softening and suppressed compression. The rate-dependent response, subjected to intermediate strain rate range, has further been assessed in terms of enhancement of peak shear strength and peak friction angle over varying initial density and confining pressure. The simulation results indicate that the rate-induced strength increase is highest for the dense state and such strength enhancements remain nearly independent of the applied confinement level.

In this paper, the existing Stokoe type torsional shear equipment is modified to saturate the specimen and measure excess pore water pressure during undrained testing. Two types of sands, Geumgang and Toyoura sands, were collected and TS tests were performed at various densities drainage conditions, and confining pressures. The cyclic threshold shearing strains were estimated based on the variations of shear modulus, material damping ratio and pore pressures with loading cycles. The effects of relative density, confining pressure, and drainage condition on the cyclic threshold shearing strains were investigated.

In this study the confining pressure dependancy of internal friction angle of rock materials are discussed based on the results of a series of large triaxial tests under consolidated-drained condition. The rock materials tested are two kinds of grain-size distribution ;one is well graded, the other poorly graded(a uniform distribution). The obtained results shows that the internal friction angle of rock materials decreases more sharply in low stress level than in high stress level, and the test constants A and b in De Mello's failure criterion on rockfill materials are A =0.683∼l.584, b=0.712∼l.015 for the well graded and A=1.145∼l.523, b=0.788∼0.880 for the poorly graded.
