During deep drilling, confined aquifers can present various challenges such as the inability to remove cuttings, rapid groundwater influx, and mud loss. Particularly in flowing well conditions, it is essential to apply the suitable mud density since the aquifer can generates an overpressurized condition. This paper proposes a method for determining the suitable mud density while drilling (SMD) through confined aquifers using mud window analysis and applies it to a case study. The minimum mud density at each depth, which represents the lower limit of the mud window, is determined by the equivalent mud density pore pressure gradient (or by adding a trip margin) at that depth. The pore pressure gradient of a confined aquifer can be calculated using the piezometric level or well head pressure of the aquifer. As the borehole reaches the confined aquifer, there is a significant increase in pore pressure gradient, which gradually decreases with increasing depth. The SMD to prevent a kick can be determined as the maximum value among the minimum mud densities in the open hole section. After entering the confined aquifer, SMD is maintained as the minimum mud density at the top of the aquifer during the drilling of the open hole section. Additionally, appropriate casing installation can reduce the SMD, minimizing the risk of mud loss or invasion into the highly permeable aquifer.
Change in atmospheric pressure produce sizable fluctuafions in wells penetrafing confined aquifers. The relationship is inverse; that is, increases in atmospheric pressure produce decreases in water levels, and conversely. When atmospheric pressure changes are expressed in terms of a column of water, the raflo of water level change to pressure change expresses the barometric efficiency of an aquifer. In the study area, aquifers are developed in the fractures, joints, bedding planes and occasionally in solufion cavities of marl interbeds. The barometric efficiency of the aquifer varies from 8 to 90%, indicating that Confined, Unconfined and Semi-Confined condifions exist locally. The barometric efficiency is characteristic of the aquifer itself and observed in the field is inversely proportional to specific storage or the storage coefficient. It is remalned in question to derive the relationship between B.E. and S.
Groundwater flow and behavior have to be investigated based on heterogeneous subsurface formation since the homogeneity assumption of this formation is not valid. Over the past twenty years, stochastic approach and Monte Carlo technique have been utilized very efficiently to understand the groundwater flow behavior. However, these techniques require lots of computational and numerical efforts according to the various researchers' comments. Therefore, utilizing new techniques with much less computational efforts such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in the prediction of the stochastic behavior for the groundwater based on heterogeneous subsurface formation is highly appreciated. The current paper introduces the ANN technique to investigate and predict the stochastic behavior of a well draw down in a confined aquifer based on subsurface heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity. Several ANN models are developed in this research to predict the unsteady two dimensional well draw down and its stochastic characteristics in a confined aquifer. The results of this study showed that ANN method with less computational efforts was very efficiently capable of simulating and predicting the stochastic behavior of the well draw down resulted from the continuous constant pumping in the middle of a confined aquifer with subsurface heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity.

The application of Terzaghi's theory of consolidation for analysing the settlement of multi-layered soils is not strictly valid because the theory involves an assumption that the soil is homogeneous. The settlement of stratified soils with confined aquifer can be analysed using numerical techniques whereby the governing differential equation is replaced by 2-dimensional finite difference approximations. The problems of discontinuous layer interface are very important in the algorithm and programming for the analysis of multi-layered consolidation using a numerical analysis, finite difference method(F.D.M.). Better results can be obtained by the process for discontinuous layer interface, since it can help consolidation analysis to model the actual ground The purpose of this paper provides an efficient computer algorithm based on numerical analysis using finite difference method(F.D.M) which account for multi-layered soils with confined aquifer to determine the degree of consolidation and excess pore pressures relative to time and positions more realistically.

Leaky aquifer (two-aquifer) system in this study consist of an upper unconfined and a lower confined aquifer with a leaky layer between them. It is assumed that water is withdrawn from the confined aquifer of the aquifer system, the upper unconfined aquifer will be affected by the leaky aquifer separating the upper and lower aquifer. In order to analyze the leaky aquifer, the determination of hydraulic parameters is needed. In this paper, hydraulic parameters are suggested by improved SM (slope-matching) method. To know variation of groundwater head in leaky aquifer systems, an numerical scheme is made using the finite difference method. To verify the numerical scheme, its solution is compared to analytical one. The solution of them agrees well in one-dimensional system at steady-state condition. And heads of groundwader are computed upper and lower aquifer in two-dimensional system.

If ground water levels of a confined fractured rock aquifer fluctuate with sea tides, individual values of hydrogeologic parameters can be determined. Tidal efficiency and time lag are first calculated from the water level data recorded at an observation device situated inland from the sea. The tidal efficiency factor of the aquifer at the seacoast is then determined from the observation in monitoring wells and used to calculate storage coefficient. Tidal efficiency factor and the tidal time lag are utilized to calculate storage coefficient and the results are compared. This method is tested in the southeastern coastal area of Busan, Korea. This is a simple and inexpensive way to test confined aquifer but the analysis should be performed according to the coastal environment.
This paper studies the problem of an infinite confined aquifer which at time t < 0 is assumed motionless. At time t = 0 crude oil seeps into the aquifer, thereby contaminating the valuable drinking water. Since the crude oil and water are im-miscible, the problem is posed as a one-dimensional two-phase unsteady moving boundary problem. A similarity solution is developed in which the moving front parameter is obtained by Newton-Ralphson iteration. A numerical scheme, involving the front tracking method, is devised employing the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. Comparison of the exact and numerical schemes shows an error of only 3%. Thus the developed numerical scheme is quite accurate in tackling more realistic problems where exact solutions are not possible.

One-year-long groundwater-level data have been collected from 18 wells in Cheon-an area. The result of barometric efficiency, autocorrelation, cross-correlation and statistical distribution evaluated from the measurement data shows that groundwater-level measurements from observation wells are the principal source of information about aquifer characteristics. Data from WA-2 has high barometric efficiency as well as steady decreasing auto-correlation coefficient, which means nonleaky confined aquifer, Most aquifers in this study show the unconfined properties so that barometric efficiencies are mostly low and the coefficients of cross-correlation between groundwater-level and precipitation are commonly high. This study showed that the long-term groundwater-level monitoring data without artificial stress such as pumping would give accurate information about aquifer characteristics.
Pumping test data obtained from five natural mineral-water producing companies (Siwon Saemmul, Daejeong Eumryo, Jain Guanguang, Cheongsu Eumryo and Hanju Sikpum) that are located within 1 km radius around Mockcheon area were analyzed. Theis(1935), Papadopulos-Cooper(1967), Hantush(1960, 1962), Hantush-Jacob(1955), Moench(1985), Neuman-Witherspoon(1969), Gringarten-Witherspoon(1969) and Gringarten-Ramey(1974) equations were applied to the pumping test analysis. The result of the pumping test analysis shows that wedge-typed confined aquifer model (Hantush, 1962) and leaky confined aquifer Case-1 model (Moench, 1985) were suitable for the study area. The models match well with geologic structure in the study area which controls aquifer by means of two major thrust faults having Nl8E and NS strikes, respectively.

The problems of discontinuous layer interface are very important in the algorithm and programming for the analysis of multi-layered consolidation using a numerical analysis, finite difference method(F.D,M.). Better results can be obtained by the process for discontinuous layer interface, since it can help consolidation analysis to model the actual ground Explicit method is simple for analysis algorithm and convenient for use except for applying the operator Crank-Nicolson method represents implicit method, which have different analysis method according to weighting factor. This method uses different algorithm according to dimension. And, this paper uses alternative direction implicit method. The purpose of this paper provides an efficient computer algorithm based on numerical analysis using finite difference method which account for multi-layered soils with confined aquifer to determine the degree of consolidation and excess pore pressures relative to time and positions more realistically.
