  • The high temperature superconductivity(HTS) cable must be cooled below the nitrogen liquefaction temperature to applicate the cable in power generation and transmi-ssion system under the superconducting state. To obtain superconducting state. a reliable cryocooler system is required. Structural and thermal design have been performed to design cryocooler system operated with reverse Brayton cycle using gas neon as refrigerant. This cryocooler system consists of compressor. recuperator. coldbox. control valves and has 1 kW cooling capacity. Heat loss calculation was conducted for the given cryocooler system by considering the conduction and radiation through the multi-layer insulation(MLI) and high vacuum. The results can be summarized as: conduction heat loss is 7 W in valves and access port and radiation heat loss is 18 W through the surface of cryocooler. The full design specifications were discussed and the results were applied to construct in house HTS cable cooling system.

  • A theoretical investigation for optimization of conduction-cooled Peltier current leads is undertaken. A Pottier current lead (PCL) is composed of a thermoelectric element (TE), a metallic lead and a high Tc superconductor (HTS) lead in the order of decreasing thermoelectric tempera ture. Mathematical expression for the minimum heat flow per unit current crossing the TE metal interface and that flowing from the metal lead to the joint of the metal and the HTS leads are obtained. It is shown that the temperature at the TE-metal interface possesses a unique optimal value that minimizes the heat flow to the joint and that this optimal value depends on the material properties of the 73 and the metallic lead but not the joint temperature nor electric current. It is also shown that there exists a unique optimal value for the joint temperature between the metal and the HTS leads that minimizes the sum of the power dissipated by ohmic heating in current leads and the refrigerator power consumed to cool the lead, for a given length of the HTS.

  • Toward the practical applications, on operation of conduction-cooled HTS SMES at temperatures well below 77 K should be investigated, in order to take advantage of a greater critical current density of HTS and considerably reduce the size and weight of the system. Recently, research and development concerning application of the conduction-cooled HTS SMES that is easily movement are actively progressing in Korea. Electrical insulation under cryogenic temperature is a key and an important element in the application of this apparatus. Using multi wrapped copper by Polyimide film for HTS SMES, the breakdown characteristics of models for turn-to-turn, that is surface contact model, were investigated under ac and impulse voltage at 77 K. A material that is Polyimide film (Kapton) 0.025 mm thickness is used for multi wrapping of the electrode. Statistical analysis of the results using Weibull distribution to examine the wrapping number effects on breakdown voltage under at and impulse voltage in $LN_2$ was carried.

  • A cooldown time is one of the major factors in many cryocooler applications, especially for the design of conduction-cooled superconducting apparatus. The estimation of cooldown seeks the elapsed time to cool thermal object by a cryocooler during initial cooldown process. This procedure includes the dimension of cold mass, heat transfer analysis for cryogenic load and available refrigerating capacity of a cryocooler. This method is applied to the specific cooling system for a 3 Tesla superconducting magnet cooled by a two-stage GM cryocooler. The result is compared with that of experiment, showing that the results of proposed method have a good agreement with experiments during initial cooling of superconducting magnet.

  • In an effort to develop a thermal-hydraulic (TH) safety analysis code for Gas-cooled Reactors (GCRs), the MARS code, which was primarily developed for TH analysis of water reactor systems, has been extended here for application to GCRs. The modeling requirements of the system code were derived from a review of major processes and phenomena that are expected to occur during normal and accident conditions of GCRs. Models fur code improvement were then identified through a review of existing MARS code capability. Among these, the following priority models necessary fur the analysis of limiting high and low pressure conduction cooling events were evaluated and incorporated in MARS-GCR/V1 : 1) Helium (He) and Carbon Dioxide ($CO_2$) as main system fluids, 2) gas convection heat transfer, 3) radiation heat transfer, and 4) contact heat transfer models. Each model has been assessed using various conceptual problems for code-to-code benchmarks and it was demonstrated that MARS-GCR/V1 is capable of capturing the relevant phenomena. This paper describes the models implemented in MARS-GCR/V1 and their verification and validation results.

  • The characteristics of the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system are faster response, longer life time, more economical, and environment friendly than other Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) using battery. Fast charge and discharge time of SMES system can provide powerful performance of improving power quality in the grid. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of SMES, the authors make a 10kJ SMES system for connection with RTDS (Real Time Digital Simulator). Because the characteristics of superconducting magnet are very important in SMES system, the necessary items such as thermal characteristic, mechanical stress and protection circuit should be considered. In this paper, the authors experimented thermal characteristics of the 10kJ SMES system. The experiment was accomplished using a simulation coils made of aluminium. It has same dimension of the 10kJ class HTS SMES coil. The coil was cooled with GM (Gifford -McMahon) cryocooler through the OFHC (Oxgen Free High thermal Conductivity) conduction bar. The test results of cool down and heat loads characteristics of the simulation coils are described in detail.

  • In this paper the HTS current lead for superconducting device is studied numerical method. The current lead is cooled by surrounded He gas by natural convection. To find wall heat flux, the linearization method is adopted Numerical results using natural convection cooling are compared with conventional cooling methods such as conduction cooling and vapor cooling. The results shows that the minimum heat dissipation is much smaller than conduction cooling. Also, the minimum heat dissipation is obtained for the non-zero gradient of temperature at warm end. HTS current lead operating current sharing mode is reduce heat flow to superconducting system.

  • The design of thermal radiation shield cooled by a cryocooler is presented. This study is motivated mainly by our recent development of prototype superconducting magnet system for the Cyclotron K120. The superconducting magnet system is composed of the magnet cryostat, transfer line and supply cryostat. In order to minimize thermal radiation load, the superconducting coil form in the magnet cryostat is enclosed by the thermal radiation shield which is thermally connected to the first-stage cold head of a two-stage cryocooler in the supply cryostat. Since the supply cryostat is located far from the magnet cryostat large temperature gradient along the thermal shield is unavoidable. In this paper, the thermal radiation shield is optimized to minimize temperature gradient with taking into account the cryogenic load, system structure and electrical load. The effect of heat source from thermal conduction through mechanical supports on the temperature distribution of thermal radiation shield is also discussed.
