Numerous studies have been conducted to understand the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams since it is a complex phenomenon. The diagonal cracking strength of a RC beam is critical since it is essential for determining the minimum amount of stirrups and the contribution of concrete to the shear strength of the beam. Most of the existing equations predicting the diagonal cracking strength of RC beams are based on experimental data. A powerful computational tool for analyzing experimental data is an artificial neural network (ANN). Its advantage over conventional methods for empirical modeling is that it does not require any functional form and it can be easily updated whenever additional data is available. An ANN model was developed for predicting the diagonal cracking strength of RC slender beams without stirrups. It is shown that the performance of the ANN model over the experimental data considered in this study is better than the performances of six design code equations and twelve equations proposed by various researchers. In addition, a parametric study was conducted to study the effects of various parameters on the diagonal cracking strength of RC slender beams without stirrups upon verifying the model.
The current Concrete Structural Design Code (2007) prescribe the equivalent rectangular stress block of the ACI 318 Building Code as concrete compressive stress distribution for design of concrete structures. The rectangular stress block may be enough for flexural strength calculation, but realistic stress-strain relationship is required for performance verification at selected limit state in performance-based design. Moreover, the ACI rectangular stress block provides non-conservative flexural strength for high strength concrete columns. Therefore a new stress distribution model is required for development of performance-based design code. This paper proposes a concrete compressive stress-strain distribution model for design and performance verification. The proposed model has a parabolic-rectangular shape, which is adopted by Eurocode 2 and Japanese Code (JSCE). It was developed by investigation of experimental test results conducted by the authors and other researchers. The test results cover high strength concrete as well as normal strength concrete. The stress distribution parameters of the proposed models are compared to those of the ACI 318 Building Code, Eurocode 2, Japanese Code (JSCE) and Canadian Code (CSA) as well as the test results.
Composite columns made of high strength materials have been used in high-rise construction owing to its excellent structural performance resulting in smaller cross-sectional sizes. However, due to the limited understanding of its structural response, current design codes do not allow the use of high strength materials beyond a certain strength limit. This paper reports additional test data, analytical and numerical studies leading to a new design method to predict the ultimate resistance of composite columns made of high strength steel and high strength concrete. Based on previous study on high strength concrete filled steel tubular members and ongoing work on high strength concrete encased steel columns, this paper provides new findings and presents the feasibility of using high strength steel and high strength concrete for general double symmetric composite columns. A nonlinear finite element model has been developed to capture the composite beam-column behavior. The Eurocode 4 approach of designing composite columns is examined by comparing the test data with results obtained from code's predictions and finite element analysis, from which the validities of the concrete confinement effect and plastic design method are discussed. Eurocode 4 method is found to overestimate the resistance of concrete encased composite columns when ultra-high strength steel is used. Finally, a strain compatibility method is proposed as a modification of existing Eurocode 4 method to give reasonable prediction of the ultimate strength of concrete encased beam-columns with steel strength up to 900 MPa and concrete strength up to 100 MPa.

Fatigue is a process of progressive permanent internal structural change in a material subjected to repeitive stresses. These change may be damaging and result in progressive growth of cracks and complete fracture if the stress repetitins are sufficiently large. For structural members subjected to cyclic loads, the continuous and irrecoverable damage processes are taking place. These processes are referred as the cumulative damage processes due to fatigue loading. Moreover, increased use of high strength concrete makes the fatigue problem more important because the cross-section and dead weight are reduced by using high strength concrete. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams according to shear reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength under repeated loadings. For this purpose, comprehensive static and fatigue tests of reinforced concrete beams were conducted. The major test variables for the fatigue teats are the concrete strength and the amount of shear reinforcements. The increase of deflections and steel strains according to load repetition has been plotted and analyzed to explore the damage accumulation phenomena of reinforced concrete beams. An analytical model for shear fatigue behavior has been introduced to analyze the damage accumulation under fatigue loads. The failure mode and fatigue lives have been also studied in the present study. The comparisons between analytical results and experimental data show good correlation.

Predicting the failure modes of reinforced concrete corbels is difficult because the reinforced concrete corbels show the shapes of sudden shear failures at even slight deflection. For this reason, an exact analysis method is demanded highly. In this study, the validity of the grid softened strut-tie model method suggested for concrete member analysis was examined through the ultimate strength evaluation of the reinforced concrete corbels tested to failure. The evaluated ultimate strengths by the grid softened strut-tie model method were compared with those by the ACI 318-02 and the softened strut-tie model method.

There is still a lack of knowledge and modelling relating to shear behaviour in reinforced concrete beams. The reason is that shear loading leads to complicated physical mecanisms, such as interlock action, dowel action, etc. Therefore, It is difficult that we make the ideal model of shear behaviour, while Truss model theory has been made good use of shear design because of simplicity and reasonableness. In this study, 6 T-type reinforced concrete beams were designed and made based on the two truss models, i.e, the plasticity truss model and the compatibility truss model, to observe shear strength of concrete and stress distribution of stirrups. 6 beams test pieces were tested with the following testing parameters. 1) specified concrete strength ; 270kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ 2) with and without the steel fiber.
The influence of normal stress perpendicular to the potential shear plane was always neglected in existing researches, which may lead to a serious deviation of the shear strength of concrete members in practice designs and numerical analyses. In this study, a series of experimental studies are carried out in this paper, which serves to investigate the shear behavior of concrete under compression shear loading. Based on the test results, a three-phase shear failure model for cohesive elements are developed, which is able to take into consideration the influence of normal stress on the shear strength of concrete. To identify the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model, numerical models of a double-noted concrete plate are developed and compared with experimental results. Results show that the proposed constitutive model is able to take into consideration the influence of normal stress on the shear strength of concrete materials, and is effective and accurate for describing the complex fracture of concrete, especially the failure modes under compression shear loadings.
The size effect on axial compressive strength in notched concrete specimens was experimentally investigated. Based on the concept of the fracture mechanics and size effect law, theoretical studies for axial compressive failure of concrete were reviewed, and two failure modes of concrete specimens under compression were discussed. In this study, experiments of axial compressive failure, which is one of the two failure modes, was carried out by using cylindrical specimens. Adequate notch length was taken from the experimental result of strength variation based on the notch length. And, by taking various sizes of specimens the size effect on axial compressive strength of concrete was investigated. Also, model equations were suggested by modified size effect law (MSEL). The test results show that size effect appears conspicuously for all series of specimens. Additionally, the effect of initial notch length on axial compressive strength was also apparent.
The focus of this research effort was characterization of the flexural and tensile properties of a specific ultra-high-strength, fiber-reinforced concrete material. The material exhibited a mean unconfined compressive strength of approximately 140 MPa and was reinforced with short, randomly distributed alkali resistant glass fibers. As a part of the study, coupled experimental, analytical and numerical investigations were performed. Flexural and direct tension tests were first conducted to experimentally characterize material behavior. Following experimentation, a micromechanically-based analytical model was utilized to calculate the material's tensile failure response, which was compared to the experimental results. Lastly, to investigate the relationship between the tensile failure and flexural response, a numerical analysis of the flexural experiments was performed utilizing the experimentally developed tensile failure function. Results of the experimental, analytical and numerical investigations are presented herein.
In this study, the behavior of the number of anchorage bolts on the glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) plates adhered to the surfaces of reinforcing concrete (RC) T-beams was investigated analytically. The analytical results were compared to the test results in term of shear strength, and midpoint displacement of the beam. The modelling of the beams was conducted in ABAQUS/CAE finite element software. The Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model was used for concrete material modeling, and Classical Metal Plasticity (CMP) model was used for reinforcement material modelling. Model-1 was the reference specimen with enough sufficient shear reinforcement, and Model-2 was the reference specimen having low shear reinforcement. Model-3, Model-4 and Model-5 were the specimens with lower shear reinforcement. These models consist of a single variable which was the number of anchorage bolts implemented to the GFRP plates. The anchorage bolts of 2, 3, and 4 were mutually mounted on each GFRP plates through the beam surfaces for Model-3, Model-4, and Model-5, respectively. It was found that Model-1, Model-3, Model-4 and Model-5 provided results approximately equal to the test results. The results show that the shear strength of the beams increased with increasing of anchorage numbers. While close results were obtained for Model-1, Model-3, Model-4 and Model-5, in Model-2, the rate of increase of displacement was higher than the increase of load rate. It was seen, finite element based ABAQUS program is inadequate in the modeling of the reinforced concrete specimens under shear force.
