  • This paper presents the application of artificial neural network (ANN) to predict deep beam deflection using experimental data from eight high-strength-self-compacting-concrete (HSSCC) deep beams. The optimized network architecture was ten input parameters, two hidden layers, and one output. The feed forward back propagation neural network of ten and four neurons in first and second hidden layers using TRAINLM training function predicted highly accurate and more precise load-deflection diagrams compared to classical linear regression (LR). The ANN's MSE values are 40 times smaller than the LR's. The test data R value from ANN is 0.9931; thus indicating a high confidence level.

  • Effects of blasting vibrations on curing concrete have not been well studied. As a result, unrealistic and costly blasting vibration constraints have been placed on blasting when it occurs in the vicinity of curing concrete. To study the effects of blasting, concrete blocks of $30\times20\times20cm$ were molded and placed on the quarry Different sets of concrete blocks were subjected to peak vibrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10cm/sec. The impulses of blasting vibrations were applied at thirty minutes intervals . Along with unvibrated concrete blocks, the vibrated concrete samples with 60.3mm in diameters were measured for elastic moduli, sonic velocity and uniaxial compressive strength. Test results can be summarized as follows : 1) The blasting vibrations between 6 and 8 hours after pour generally have exerted bad influences on the uniaxial compressive strength of the concrete 2) Under low vibration of 0.25cm/sec variations of the uniaxial compressive strength were not shown. As the magnitudes of blasting vibration increased, compressive strength of concrete decreased. But under the vibrations between 5 and 10cm/sec decreases in strength were almost same. 3) Physical properties of the p-wave velocity, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio appeared to decrease for the concrete blocks subjected to vibration for 6 to 8 hours.

  • According to the recent tendency that the buildings in the downtown are gradually Manhattanized, the very thick massive concrete is selected as the foundation of architectures. By the way, because this mass concrete cannot be simultaneously pour in a great quantity due to the circumstance at the field, not only the questions on the unification between the concretes pour on the upper layer and the lower layer are presented but also the cracks by the internal force from the difference of hydration exothermic period are occurred, which are pointed out as the problems. Thus, this study performed Mock-up test to apply the hydration heat controlling method of massive concrete for horizontal partition pouring construction to the building sites for the purpose of securing the stability on the cracks by the internal force from the difference of hydration exothermic period on the upper layer and the lower layer of massive concrete and checked the efficiency. As the results of test, in case of setting time difference method by super retarder with 2 layers and 4 layers, the effect that temperature gaps between upper part and lower part were lowered and the possibility of crack occurrence was decreased as the peak time of the heat of hydration became delayed to the latter term could be confirmed.

  • Despite vigorous studies on ultra high-strength concrete in Korea, it still faces many challenges in application to on-site construction methods. This study intends to evaluate the applicability of the VH separated-pouring method which is currently used and was designed to pour ultra high-strength concrete with a design strength of 60, 100N/㎟ separately to girder and beam. When it comes to VH separated-pouring, there is a difference in the required design strength between a girder and a beam, which tends to be larger for ultra high-strength concrete. The tensile strength and cold joint at the joint end have not been commonly evaluated and thus the inevitably of its use is dependent on a structural analysis of the structural stress of reinforcement. In the study, potential problems with respect to the building material which might occur during the pouring of ultra high-strength concrete was evaluated and issues on joint surface performance, the hydration energy contained in the members, and the effects of contraction in concrete were considered as the key elements for study.

  • Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computational intelligence have made it viable in the construction industry and structural analysis. This study usesthe Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) as a modelling tool to predict the strain in tie section for High Strength Self Compacting Concrete (HSSCC) deep beams. 3773 experimental data were collected. The input data andits corresponding strains in tie section as output data were recorded at all loading stages. Results from ANFIS are compared with the classical linear regression (LR). The comparison shows that the ANFIS's results are highly accurate, precise and satisfactory.

  • The spiral case concrete (SCC) used in the underground powerhouse of large hydropower stations is complex, difficult to pour, and has high requirements for temperature control and crack prevention. In this study, based on the closed-loop control theory of "multi-source sensing, real analysis, and intelligent control", a new intelligent cooling control system (ICCS) suitable for the SCC is developed and is further applied to the Wudongde large-scale underground powerhouse. By employing the site monitoring data, numerical simulation, and field investigation, the temperature control quality of the SCC is evaluated. The results show that the target temperature control curve can be accurately tracked, and the temperature control indicators such as the maximum temperature can meet the design requirements by adopting the ICCS. Moreover, the numerical results and site investigation indicate that a safety factor of the spiral case structure was sure, and no cracking was found in the concrete blocks, by which the effectiveness of the system for improving the quality of temperature control of the SCC is verified. Finally, an intelligent cooling control procedure suitable for the SCC is proposed, which can provide a reference for improving the design and construction level for similar projects.

  • A thermal stresses by heat of hydration was analyzed according to a change of a pour height in reactor containment building. In case of more than 3.6m pouring height a crack index by heat of hydration analysis resulted in less than 1 because there is not a construction joint of vertical direction and for a self-restraint effect of circumferential section shape. Therefore detailed consideration on a mixture proportion of binder type, quantity in concrete and selection of a form in seasonal air temperature is needed for a control of tensile stress by heat of hydration.

  • The comparison of the effectiveness of artificial neural network (ANN) and linear regression (LR) in the prediction of strain in tie section using experimental data from eight high-strength-self-compact-concrete (HSSCC) deep beams are presented here. Prior to the aforementioned, a suitable ANN architecture was identified. The format of the network architecture was ten input parameters, two hidden layers, and one output. The feed forward back propagation neural network of eleven and ten neurons in first and second TRAINLM training function was highly accurate and generated more precise tie strain diagrams compared to classical LR. The ANN's MSE values are 90 times smaller than the LR's. The correlation coefficient value from ANN is 0.9995 which is indicative of a high level of confidence.

  • Concrete with high thixotropy has a lower plastic viscosity when pour in, thus demonstrating fluidity, and After poured, the viscosity can be restored again to ensure stable progress without additional liquidity and material separation. Therefore, in this study, a basic study of thixotropy of concrete was proceeded through cross-linked bond of PVA and Borax. Therefore, it is judgment that the higher the concentration of boron solutions, the higher the strength of the interconnections between PVA and boron.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the problem of crack repair materials and methods in existing concrete structure and to propose the effective injection method on crack repair by packer type. The result of this study is as follows. It is investigated that the crack width in the inner matrix of concrete structure is decreased about 30-40% than that in the sulfate of the concrete structure. Also it is showed that the possibility which could be monolithic with injection part became higher if the injection part if installed near to surface of concrete on the punching method to vertical direction against crack area. The injection of repair material can be poured smoothly under about $10N/mm^2$ pressure on the condition that cracks are monolithic with injection part without dust by drill. The effective method to pour the injection repair material is the punching method by coredrill but several research to minimize injection pressure should be continually.
