스폴링이 발생한 콘크리트 포장의 내구성 영향인자 조사를 위한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study to Investigate the Factors Affecting Durability of Spalled Cement Concrete Pavements)

  • PURPOSES : It is necessary to prevent premature failure of concrete pavements caused by durability problems. The purpose of this study was to find factors affecting the durability of concrete pavements, and suggest improvement methods for existing concrete mix design. METHODS : Factors influencing durability were derived from laboratory test data for common field failure conditions and main properties of concrete cores taken from the field. The improvement of concrete properties was investigated by evaluating the performance of existing and proposed mix proportion designs and curing methods. RESULTS : The compressive strength and the absorbing performance of the low Blaine cement and the high-strength mixture were better than those of the Type I cement. Wet curing showed better compressive strength, elastic modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion, and absorption performance than air curing or compound curing. As a result of comparing concrete cores collected in the field, the sections with good durability showed good performance in terms of resistance to chloride ion penetration, absorption, and initial absorption rate. CONCLUSIONS : The absorption performance was considered as a possible foactor affecting durability of cement concrete pavements as a result of field core tests. In order to improve the durability of the pavement concrete, it is necessary to improve the existing mixtures and curing methods.

콘크리트 도로 포장의 초기 온도 분포 분석 (Temperature Patterns in Concrete Pavements at Very Early Ages)

  • 포틀랜드 시멘트 콘크리트 도로 포장의 온도 패턴을 콘크리트 타설시부터 최근에 개발된 저렴하며 획기적인 센서를 이용하여 측정하였으며 그 결과를 분석하였다. 콘크리트 포장의 온도 측정은 여러 다른 지역에서 여러 다른 두께를 가진 콘크리트 포장에서 수행하였다. 콘크리트 포장의 온도 패턴은 깊이방향과 콘크리트 타설시간에 따른 종방향의 변화를 고려하여 분석하였으며, 포장 표면의 반사율, 그늘, 덮음막 등이 콘크리트 포장의 온도 패턴에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 본 연구 결과에서 콘크리트를 타설한 날의 콘크리트 포장의 최고 온도는 종방향을 따라 타설 시간이 다름으로 인해 생기는 차이가 두드러지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 콘크리트의 영점응력온도(zero-stress temperature)는 타설한 날의 최고 온도와 직접적인 연관이 있으므로 타설 시간에 따른 최고 온도의 차이는 콘크리트 포장의 거동 및 성능에 크게 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 또한 콘크리트 포장의 표면 상태 (표면 색상, 그늘 유무, 덮음막 유무 등)도 콘크리트 포장의 온도 패턴에 큰 영향을 미치는 인자인 것으로 분석되었다.

Evaluating the performance AASHTOWare's mechanistic-empirical approach for roller-compacted concrete roadways

  • The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has recommended the use of AASHTOWare Pavement Mechanistic-Empirical Design (PMED) software for Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) pavement design, but specific calibration for RCC is missing. This study investigates the software's capacity to predict the long-term performance of RCC roadways within the framework of conventional concrete pavement calibration. By reanalyzing existing RCC projects in several U.S. states: Colorado, Arkansas, South Carolina, Texas, and Illinois, the study highlights the need for specific calibration tailored to the unique characteristics of RCC. Field observations have emphasized occurrence of early distresses in RCC pavements, particularly transverse-cracking and joint-related issues. Despite data challenges, the AASHTOWare PMED software exhibits notable correlation between its long-term predictions and actual field performance in RCC roadways. This study stresses that RCC applications with insufficient joint spacing and thickness are prone to premature cracking. To enhance the accuracy of RCC pavement design, it is essential to discuss the inclusion of RCC as a dedicated rigid pavement option in AASHTOWare PMED. This becomes particularly crucial when the rising popularity of RCC roadways in the U.S. and Canada is considered. Such an inclusion would solidify RCC as a viable third option alongside Jointed Plain Concrete Pavements (JPCP) and Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavements (CRCP) for design and deployment of rigid pavements. The research presents a roadmap for future calibration endeavors and advocates for the integration of RCC pavement as a distinct pavement type within the software. This approach holds promise for achieving more precise RCC pavement design and performance predictions.

  • The cement concrete pavements are designed twenty years of performance life in Korea. At the present time, some expressways have been elapsed seventy percent of performance life which are detecting local failures. The most repair methods using to repair failures are partial depth repair and full section repair. These methods are most important bonding strength between rapid curing materials and substrate concrete pavements. This study was performed to evaluate bonding strength of the composites section made of rapid curing material and substrate concrete pavements. The pull-out tester was used to test bonding strength for the composites section made of each materials. In the results of the test, the bonding strength values of the epoxy mortar and acrylic mortar are higher than those of the other materials. The performance life of repaired section is affected by various factor. The bonding strength of bonded composites section may be affect the performance life, significantly.

  • Most defects in the cement concrete pavement take place mainly on the joints. These corner cracks don't happen as often as others relatively. it happens continuously. In order to analyze the structural behavior of the corner cracks, The finite element structural analysis was performed on the representative section of the cement concrete pavements using JSLAB which uses FEM analysis method. On plain cement concrete pavements, The result shows that loading not only on the joints but also on the center of slab brings out the maximum stress on the corner of slab and it is expected to make the corner cracks.

  • Reinforced concrete deck slabs are directly affected by traffic loads and they are also susceptible to weather-related problems, such as cracking, reinforcement corrosion, spatting, scaling, delamination, leakage, efflorescence and so on. Some of these defects are caused by water which seeps through pavements and trapped between pavements and deck slabs. For durability of reinforced concrete deck slabs and pavements, it is very important to protect deck slabs and drain the trapped water out. To develop the trapped water drainage system, the following studies have been performed in Korea Highway Cooperation: related researches are reviewed; for six bridges, deck slabs are thoroughly investigated; new system to effectively drain the trapped water out is proposed; the proposed system is installed and evaluated. The proposed system is proved to be effective to drain the trapped water out and is expected to increase the durability of reinforced concrete deck slabs.

Economic and Fast-track Rehabilitation of Concrete Pavements and Bridge Decks

  • The last 10 years have seen considerable growth in the use of proprietary and special repair cements for concrete pavements in the state of Oklahoma. Many of these products lend themselves to "fast track" construction techniques that allow reopening to traffic within 12 hours or less. These products achieve high early strengths by accelerating the Portland cement hydration process for both Type I and Type III cements. In this paper, the important features of a durable repair which include strength, compatibility and bond or adhesion are first discussed. Then the development, testing and field implementation of the aforementioned materials are discussed including the learning curve required to implement a repair system, not just install a new material. Some of the materials discussed, while expensive on a cost per unit basis, hold great promise for economical use on fast track project.

줄눈부의 거동을 고려한 시멘트콘크리트 포장체의 해석모델 개발 (Development of Analytical Model for Cement Concrete Pavements Considering Joint Behavior)

  • 시멘트콘크리트 포장의 세로줄눈 및 가로줄눈은 교통하중의 반복이동에 의한 포장슬래브의 단차현상을 억제하고, 하중, 온도 및 습도변화 등에 의하여 발생하는 응력 및 변형을 효율적으로 조절하기 위하여 설치된다. 그러나, 노반공극수의 동결융해, 지하수위의 변화, 줄눈부의 펌핑 및 단차현상으로 지반지지력이 저하되면 줄눈부에 국부적 응력집중이 발생하여 하중분산응력이 저하됨은 물론 포장의 공용성 및 안전성을 크게 위협하게 된다. 따라서 시멘트콘크리트 포장을 효율적으로 유지관리하고 사용성을 확보하기 위해서는 줄눈부의 하중전달특성을 보다 엄밀히 반영할 수 있는 해석모델이 정립되어야 하며, 이를 토대로 체계적인 유지관리 시스템이 개발되어야 한다. 이러한 관점에서 본 연구에서는 줄눈부의 거동을 다우얼바의 연결작용, 골재 맞물림작용 및 타이드키 작용으로 구분한 후, 포장체의 특성에 따라 이들의 영향을 포장슬래브의 구조해석에 선택적으로 반영시킬 수 있도록 해석프로그램을 개발하였다. 포장슬래브의 거동평가를 위하여 Winkler 기초모델 및 탄성지반 위에 놓인 판이론을 적용하였으며, 4절점 사각형 유한요소를 사용하여 줄눈요소의 강성 매트리스를 전 해석과정에 반영하였다. 한편, 본 연구의 해석결과를 Huang의 수치예에 비하여 Arlington 실험값에 더욱 근접된 경향을 보이므로 매우 효율적인 것으로 평가된다.

시멘트 콘크리트 포장의 피로실험과 프로그램 작성 (A Laborratory Study of the Fatigue and Development of Analysis Program of Concrete Pavements)

  • In the present study, a series of static load test and fatigue test were carried out to investigate the behavior of the CRCP. The specimens were sized to 25% of real one lane CRCP. The fatigue tests were carried out for the repetitive load as much as 16%, 39%, 40%, 48%, 59% and 78% of the max. static load for the center or corner loading. Compared the field test with laboratory test for FWD, it is an equpment useful to maintance and manage of the concrete pavements.

보도포장의 종류에 따른 보행자의 안전성 및 쾌적감에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Safety and Comfort of Pedestrians according to the Type of Sidewalk Pavement)

  • Safety, resilience and comfort of pedestrian were assessed by the British Pendulum Test and SB/GB factor test at 8 kinds of sidewalk pavement. Sidewalk paving materials were normal concrete, porous concrete, concrete block, soil concrete, asphalt, rubber chip/resin mixture, wood chip/resin mixture and floor tile. In addition, a survey was conducted to investigate the perception of pedestrians on the sidewalk paving material. As a result, while the skid resistance value was measured in the most 60BPN above, the floor tile showed a low value of about 30BPN. The ratios of SB factor to GB factor of the elastic pavements(rubber/resin mixture and wood chip/resin mixture) appeared to be relatively large when compared with those of the conventional sidewalks. The survey showed that respondents perceived as more safe and comfortable elastic pavements compared to conventional pavements. Approximately 50% of respondents answered that hardened soil pavement was the most environmentally friendly.
