The objective of this study is to assess the strengthening effects of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) sheets such as Carbon fiber, Glass fiber, and PET(polyethylene terephthalate) on reinforced concrete flexural members. Variables of theoretical analysis are types of strengthening materials, material properties and amount of strengthening materials. A virtual flexural member without FRP sheets was created as a control specimen to understand the structural behavior of the non-strengthened specimen in terms of elastic and ultimate cross section. In total, 11 specimens including one non-strengthened and ten strengthened specimens were investigated. Various variables such as types of strengthening, strengthening properties, and amount of strengthening were studied to compare the behavior of the control specimen with those of strengthened specimens with regard to moment-curvature relationship. Results of theoretical analysis showed that the moment capacity of strengthened specimens was superior to that of the control specimen. However, the control specimen indicated the best ductility among all the specimens. As the amount of strengthening increased, flexural performance was improved. Furthermore, the results indicated that the ductile effect of members was affected by the ultimate strain of FRP sheets. The strengthening effect on the damaged member was similar to that on the non-damaged one since there was less than 10% difference in terms of flexural strength and ductility. Therefore, even if a damaged member is treated as non-damaged for analysis there is probably no noticeable difference.
A simplistic approach towards evaluation of complete load deflection response of Reinforced Concrete (RC) flexural members under post fire (residual) scenario is presented in this paper. The cross-section of the RC flexural member is divided into a number of sectors. Thermal analysis is performed to determine the temperature distribution across the section, for given fire duration. Temperature-dependent stress-strain curves for concrete and steel are then utilized to perform a moment-curvature analysis. The moment-curvature relationships are obtained for beams exposed to different fire durations. These are then utilized to obtain the load-deflection plots following pushover analysis. Moreover one of the important issues of modeling the initial stiffness giving due consideration to stiffness degradation due to material degradation and thermal cracking has also been addressed in a rational manner. The approach is straightforward and can be easily programmed in spreadsheets. The presented approach has been validated against the experiments, available in literature, on RC beam subjected to different fire durations viz. 1hr, 1.5hrs and 2hrs. Complete load-deflection curves have been obtained and compared with experimentally reported counterparts. The results also show a good match with the results obtained using more complicated approaches such as those involving Finite element (FE) modeling and conducting a transient thermal stress analysis. Further evaluation of the beams during fire (at elevated temperatures) was performed and a comparison of the mechanical behavior of RC beams under post fire and during fire scenarios is made. Detailed formulations, assumptions and step by step approach are reported in the paper. Due to the simplicity and ease of implementation, this approach can be used for evaluation of global performance of fire affected structures.
Tensile strength of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is approximately 10 times higher than that of the steel reinforcement, but the design strength of CFRP is normally limited by unpredictable bond failure between RC and CFRP. Many researches concerned with bond behavior between RC and CFRP have been carried out to prevent the bond failure of RC beam strengthened by CFRP, but the national design code for design bond strength of CFRP has not been constructed. In this study, three beam specimens strengthened by CFRP under the parameters of bonded length were tested to derive the design bond strength of CFRP for the RC flexural members. Each bonded length was calculated based on the bond strength of JCI and CFRP manufacturing company. Also, another two beam specimens strengthened by CFRP were tested to inspect the construction environment effects such as mixing error of epoxy resin, and the amount of epoxy primer. From the test results, it is concluded that the maximum design bond strength of CFRP to RC flexural member is considered to be $\tau$a =8 kgf/㎠.

The crack widths of reinforced concrete flexural members are influenced by repetitive fatigue loadings. The bond stress-slip relation is necessary to estimate these crack widths realistically. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to propose a realistic model for bond stress-slip relation under repeated loading. To this end, several series of tests were conducted to explore the bond-slip behavior under repeated loadings. Three different bond stress levels with various number of load cycles were considered in the tests. The present tests indicate that the bond strength and the slip at peak bond stress are not influenced much by repeated loading if bond failure does not occur. However, the values of loaded slip and residual slip increase with the increase of load cycles. The bond stress after repeated loading approaches the ultimate bond stress under monotonic loading and the increase of bond stress after repeated loading becomes sharper as the number of repeated loads increases. The bond stress-slip relation after repeated loading was derived as a function of residual slip, bond stress level, and the number of load cycles. The models for slip and residual slip were also derived from the present test data. The number of cycles to bond slip failure was derived on the basis of safe fatigue criterion, i.e. maximum slip criterion at ultimate bond stress.
Recently, the external prestressed concrete structures are increasingly being built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete beams with unbonded tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in that the increment of tendon stress was derived by whole member behavior. By this reason, the ultimate stress of external tendon is smaller than that of bonded tendon or internal unbonded tendon. However, in the domestic and abroad code, the equation of ultimate stress of external tendon is not suggested yet, and the equation of ultimate stress of internal unbonded tendon is used instead of that of external tendon. Therefore, in this paper, after effective variables of ultimate stress of external tendon were analyzed, the analytical equation of ultimate stress of external tendon was proposed. And the reasonable coefficients were proposed by statistical work of test results of 25 beam with external tendon. Finally, the practical proposed equation of ultimate stress of external tendon was proposed with analytical and statistical model. The equation of ACI-318 and AASHTO 1994 were not matched with test results and had no correlations, and the proposed equation was well matched with test results. So the proposed equation in this paper will be a effective basis for the evaluation of external tendons in analysis and design.
The Component-Based Software Development (CBSD) has established itself as a sound paradigm in the software engineering discipline and has gained wide spread acceptance in the industry. The CBSD relies on the availability of standard software components for encapsulation of specific functionality. This paper presents the framework for the development of a software component for the design of general member cross-sections. The proposed component can be used in component-based structural engineering software or as a stand-alone program developed around the component. This paper describes the use-case scenarios for the component, its design patterns, object models, class hierarchy, the integrated and unified handling of cross-section behavior and implementation issue. It is expected that a component developed using the proposed patterns and model can be used in analysis, design and detailing packages to handle reinforced concrete, partially prestressed concrete, steel-concrete composite and steel sections. The component can provide the entire response parameters of the cross section including determination of geometric properties, elastic stresses, flexural capacity, moment-curvature, and ductility ratios. The component can also be used as the main computational engine for stand-alone section design software. The component can be further extended to handle the retrofitting and strengthening of cross-sections, shear and torsional response, determination of fire-damage parameters, etc.
As composite materials, the addition of steel fiber with concrete significant)y improves the engineering properties of structural members, notably shear strength and ductility. Flexural strength, fatigue strength, and the capacity to resist cracking are also enhanced. Especially the strengthening effect of steel fiber in shear is to prevent the brittle shear failure. In this study, shear-strengthening effect of steel fiber in RC short columns were investigated from the literature surveys and 10th specimem's member test results. From the test results, following conclusions can be made; the maximum enhancement of shear-strengthening effect can be achieved at about 1.5 % of steel fiber contents, shear strength and ductility capacity were improved remarkably in comparison to stiffness and energy dissipation capacity in steel fiber reinforced concrete.

The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is significantly growing in construction and infrastructure applications where durability under harsh environmental conditions is of great concern. In order to examine the applicability of FRP rebar as a reinforcement in flexural member, flexural tests were conducted. 12 beams with different FRP materials such as CFRP, GFRP and Hybrid FRP and reinforcement ratio were tested and analyzed in terms of failure mode, moment-deflection, flexural capacity, ductility index and sectional strain distribution. The test results were also compared with the theoretical model represented in ACI 440.1R06. Test results indicate that the flexural capacity of the beams reinforced by FRP bars can be accurately predicted using the ultimate design theory. They also show that the current ACI model for computing the deflection overestimates the actual deflection of GFRP series and underestimates the deflection of CFRP series.

As the limit state design method is applied as a method of designing concrete structures, the ultimate state is considered in the analysis or design. In fact, when the reinforced concrete member bears tensile force, the force is transmitted from the rebar to the concrete, and the structure bears the tensile force to the ultimate state even after yield. Therefore, the accurate evaluation of behavior after yield, it is necessary to study the tension stiffening effect after yield of the flexural member. In this study, a 4-point bending test was conducted on the RC simple beam having a rectangular cross section of the double reinforcement, and the behavior of the member was analyzed in detail using the image analysis method. Using the analysis results, the estimation formula for the tension stiffening effect after yield was proposed, and the applicability of this was verified through the experimental results of existing study. The difference between the ultimate strain and the yield strain representing the ductile behavior of the member is similar to the experimental results. The prediction of the proposed formula is relatively accurate.
Recently, various strengthening methods using carbon fiber sheets (CFS) have been developed for the rehabilitation of structures and applied to the concrete member. However, still research need arises in order to verify the structural capacity of RC member which experienced bond loss between concrete and CFS after strengthening. This is because previous research has focused on the development of design process and evaluation of structural capacity only for retrofit. The appearance of this loss may be initiated at just after retrofit construction. And it will be more serious when the layer number of CFS increases. In order to minimize above mistake in retrofit design using CFS, more exact evaluation process to predict the bond loss of CFS is required. The objective of this research is to study the variation of flexural structural capacity of beam which has experienced bond loss after strengthening using CFS. Experimental and analytical study are performed and evaluation of the previous formula is conducted. Test result showed that the significant strength deterioration was not found until the bond loss of 20%. Overall structural behavior of the beams can be predicted by nonlinear sectional analysis.
