  • Pullout test known as Lok test among the test methods to evaluate concrete strength strength is a test method which is used to decide the form removal time by assessing the early strength of concrete in a new construction, or to control the quality of newly placed concrete. This method has inconvenience to place inserts on the form work in advance, however, the placing work is quite simple and it has advantage that the strength can be measured at field as long as the inserts are placed. In this study, the first step is to investigate the properties of test method itself, by performing the laboratory test which covers deviation of the method and factors affecting the results, etc. The second step is to correlate the result with cylinder strength and other NDT methods such as rebound hammer, ultrasonic method, etc. And that, the results are compared with foreign results to find the differences between the two. In this research, new factors such as moisture content, area of aggregate failure cross section and area of aggregate separation cross section, etc as well as wate-cement ratio and age are investigated.

  • The acoustic emission(AE) signal from concrete cylinder specimen during failure process under cycling compressive loads were recorded and analyzed. Different filters were set on the AE signal duration based on the characteristic of amplitude distribution. From the value of AE signal amplitude, which corresponds to the occurrence of the peak for AE hits, the AE signals from concrete compressive specimen were divided into five sections. The relationship between the AE signal section and the failure mechanism of these materials, analyzed on the meso-structure level was determined. Based on the experiments, the AE characteristics of each failure mechanism are given. The results show that the AE technique is a valuable tool to study the failure mechanism of concrete.

  • There will be a big problem in disposing of waste tie coming from the cars. Because many of these have been thrown away to the field and environmentally polluted. New, We need to find out how to dispose or recycle these waste material. It is thought that recycling this material especially mixing with concrete will be a good idea. This study is focused how each material do its behavior due to the size of waste type particle and its amount into concrete material. 0.4mm-10mm range of particle has been applied to the material : Also, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% range of tyre particle proportion has been applied to make cylinder molds. The concrete mold with waste-tyre particle has vibration-absorbing ability. It is found that 0.4 -0.6mm particle mixing concrete has been more solid organized. And this waste tyre material could be applied to the general concrete, it is found.

  • This paper deals with the effect of concrete target size on penetration of projectiles. We investigated the penetration depth and residual velocity of projectiles using the 2-D axial symmetric model. Most analysis were conducted with 13 kg projectile (striking velocity: 456.4 m/s) and concrete target with compressive strength of 39 MPa. This paper provided penetration depth (or residual velocity) versus ratio D/d (target diameter, D and projectile diameter, d). When the bottom of concrete cylinder was constrained, penetration depth converged to limit depth more than the ratio D/d of 36. The residual velocity of projectile with thin concrete target were investigated. The residual velocity was converged to specific velocity more than the ratio D/d of 16.

  • Enhancement of strength and ductility is the main reason for the extensive use of FRP jackets to provide external confinement to reinforced concrete columns especially in seismic areas. Therefore, numerous researches have been carried out in order to provide a better description of the behavior of FRP-confined concrete for practical design purposes. This study presents a new approach to obtain strength enhancement of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) confined concrete cylinders by applying artificial neural networks (ANNs). The proposed ANN model is based on experimental results collected from literature. It represents the ultimate strength of concrete cylinders after CFRP confinement which is also given in explicit form in terms of geometrical and mechanical parameters. The accuracy of the proposed ANN model is quite satisfactory when compared to experimental results. Moreover, the results of the proposed ANN model are compared with five important theoretical models proposed by researchers so far and considered to be in good agreement.

  • As the ministry of construction and transportation established quality standards for recycled aggregate in August, 2005, the consumption of recycled aggregates is expected to be increased in construction fields in the future. Thus the relations between compressive strength of general concretes and that of recycled aggregate concretes which are applied to actual structures are attempted to investigate through non-destruction testing method. Presently Schmitt-Hammer test method is that concrete compressive strength is predicted by measuring surface hardness of concretes, and is well known as the most convenient and simply operated method among many non-destruction testing methods. In this study, cylinder specimen and mock-up were constructed using recycled aggregate concretes made by the first class recycled coarse aggregates and recycled fine aggregates specified in KS F 2573 (recycled aggregate for concrete), and compressive strength of hardened concrete of middle ages was evaluated.

  • The compressive strength of concrete is used as the most fundamental and important material property when reinforced concrete structures are designed. It has been problem to use this value, however, because the control specimen sizes and shapes are different from every country. In this study, the effect of specimen shapes and sizes on compressive strength of concrete members was experimentally investigated based on fracture mechanics. Experiments for the mode I failure was earned out by using cylinder, cube, and prism specimens. The test results are curve fitted using least square method(LSM) to obtain the new parameters for the modified size effect law(MSEL). The analysis results show that the effect of specimen sizes and shapes on ultimate strength is apparent. The results also show stronger size effect in member when the casting direction is perpendicular to loading direction

  • The purpose of this paper is to offer a base data of specification, so that the strength information of concrete in the structure for irrigation can be rationally determined the coefficient of variation of an existing irrigation structure and the best fit the ready-mixed concrete strength to specified strength $f_ck$. From analysis of concrete cylinders from about 30 numbers in southern Korea, it was concluded that the coefficient of variation of cylinder strength were approximately 5.9%. On the basis of the core strength test data, it was appeared that the average coefficient of variation for the existing irrigation structure can be taken as 17.8% for strength level 21MPa.

  • The strength and ductile capacity of reinforced concrete column can be improved by confinement using transverse reinforcement. Variety stress-strain models about the reinforced concrete confined by transverse reinforcement has been proposed. In this paper, parameters which effect to the ultimate confinement stress of circular cylinder confined by high strength transverse steel is examined. And the possion's ratio equation is proposed by analysis of strain between concrete and transverse reinforcement.

  • Response variability of reinforced concrete frame subjected to material property randomness has been evaluated with the aid of the finite element method. The spatial variation of Young's modulus is assumed to be a two-dimensional homogeneous stochastic process. Young's Modulus of concrete material has been investigated based on the uiaxial strength of concrete cylinder. Direct Monte Carlo simulation method is used to investigate the response of reinforced concrete frame due to the variation of Young's modulus with the Neumann expansion method and the pertubation method. The results by three analytic methods are compared with those by deterministic finite element analysis. These stochastic technique may be an efficient tool for evaluating the structural safety and reliability of reinforced concrete structures.
