  • Depths of the vertical cracks in the concrete were determined by the time of flight of the ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic waves are diffracted at the crack tip, and the arrival time of ultrasonic waves are dependent on the crack depth and speration distance between transmitting and receiving ultrasonic transducers. The vertical cracks with 0.2-2mm width and 10-100mm depth were examined by multi-layered ultrasonic transducers. It was found that the time of flight of ultrasonic waves were proportional to the depth of vertical cracks. The depth of vertical cracks in the range of 20-100mm depth could be determined by the transient time of the diffracted ultrasonic waves

  • Over the past few decades, considerable numbers of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. The majority of these researches have been performed on sound uncracked concrete, although most of in-situ concrete structures have more or less micro-cracks. It is only recent approach that the attention has shifted towards the influence of cracks and crack width on the penetration of chloride into concrete. The penetration of chlorides into concrete through the cracks can make a significant harmful effect on reinforcement corrosion. Author of this study examined the effect of cracks on chloride penetration by short tem experiment. However, it is necessary to accomplish the effect by long term experiment to get reliable goal. In this study, the long term experiment was carried out and the experimental result was compared with short term experiment. Crack tends to decrease with elapsed time because of self-healing. Especially this trend was obvious in concrete sample with wide crack with.

  • Reflection cracks can be occurred in the asphalt layer overlaid on portland cement concrete pavements, because this layer is sensitive to environmental conditions including temperature changes and displacements of the pavement. A result of trial applications using glass fiber grids is introduced in this paper. Glass fiber grids were used between the asphalt layer and the concrete base to reduce the reflection crack of the asphalt layer. No cracks were observed in the glass grid installed area about 2 years later from trial constructions.

  • In this paper, the crack properties fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) beams by experimental method is discussed. The major role played by the steel fiber occurs in the post-cracking zone, in which the fibers bridge across the cracked matrix. Because of its improved ability to bridging cracks, SFRC has better crack properties than that of reinforced concrete(RC). Crack properties are influenced by longitudinal reinforcement ratio, volume and type of steel fibers, strength of concrete and the stress level. Crack width and number of cracks in SFRC beams have been evaluated from experimental test data at various levels of stress for the tested beams.

  • The use of concrete pavements is increasing by virtue of durability and excellent load resisting capacity. But cracks and demage in concrete pavements may be occurred by continuous reciclic load, as time goes by. Therefore, transverser contraction joints are constructed in concrete pavements to relieve tensile stresses, and when properly spaced they control the location of transverse cracks.

  • This paper proposes a method that extracts characteristics of cracks such as length, thickness and direction from a concrete slab surface image with image processing techniques. These techniques extract the cracks from the concrete surface image in variable conditions including bad image conditions) using the ART2-based RBF network to recognize the dominant directions -45 degree, 45 degree, horizontal and vertical) of the extracted cracks from the automatically calculated specifications like the lengths, directions and widths of the cracks. Our proposed extraction algorithms and analysis of the concrete cracks used a Robert operation to emphasize the cracks, and a Multiple operation to increase the difference in brightness between the cracks and background. After these treatments, the cracks can be extracted from the image by using an iterated binarization technique. Noise reduction techniques are used three separate times on this binarized image, and the specifications of the cracks are extracted form this noiseless image. The dominant directions can be recognized by using the ART2-based RBF network. In this method, the ART2 is used between the input layer and the middle layer to learn, and the Delta learning method is used between the middle layer and the output layer. The experiments using real concrete images showed that the cracks were effectively extracted, and the Proposed ART2-based RBF network effectively recognized the directions of the extracted cracks.

  • The crack of concrete induced by the heat of hydration is s serious problem, particularly in concrete structures such as bridge piers. thick walls, box type walls, mat-slab of nuclear reactor building, dams of foundations of high rise buildings, etc. As a result of the temperature rise and restriction condition of foundation, the thermal stress which way induce the cracks can occur. Therefore the various techniques of the thermal stress control in massive concrete have been widely used. One of them is prediction of the thermal stress, besides low-heat cement which mitigates the temperature rise, design change which consider steel bar reinforcement, operation control and so on. In this study, firstly it introduce the thermal cracks control technique by employing low-heat cement concrete, thermal stress analysis, Secondly it shows the application of the cracks control technique like the bottom of No.15,16 Underground LNG Tank in Inchon.

  • Since the length of massive wall-structure is generally longer and larger than its thickness and a lift height of concrete of placement, cracks induced by hydration heat are governed by outer structural restriction rather than inner one. However, the degree of restriction control is expected to be affected by the sizes of wall thickness, length and a lift height. Thus, this analytical study aims at the development of relationship among those to minimize thermal cracks. In addition, the effect of types of cement on the thermal heats and stresses is evaluated for anti-sulphate and 2blended Portland cements concrete. It was found from analytical study that a lift height of concrete placement is the most important factor controlling thermal cracks, and the increase of lift heights is not always detrimental to structural safety.

  • Latex-modified concrete using ready mix concrete (R-LMC) was developed for application of building construction project (specifically, the rooftop of a parking garage unable to use heavy equipments for bridge deck overlay) due to three major outstanding properties of R-LMC; bond strength, resistance of cracks at early age, and resistance of freezing and thawing. However, R-LMC at the placement stage is required to be sufficiently cured because R-LMC is very sensitive to rate of evaporation of surface moisture. This study focused on effects of different curing methods and climate condition on cracks on the surface of hardened R-LMC considering the chart of rate of evaporation of surface moisture from concrete provided by American Concrete Institute in manual for placement of latex modified concrete.
