Development of a Technical Consulting System for Concrete Mix Design (콘크리트의 배합설계 기술자문시스템 개발)

  • A prototype expert system for normal concrete mix design was developed using an technical consulting system development tool, EXSYS Professional. The knowledge contained in the system was obtained from the standard specifications of Korea Concrete Institute, American Concrete Institute and from the related British Standards. The knowledge base and user interface will be expanded to cover wider scopes of the problems. If the system is successfully developed as an operational system, it will produce a great deal of economic benefits by reducing the time and money needed to obtain an expert's judgement and experience in decision making for repetitive tasks related to concrete mix proportions.

An Experimental Study on Flexural Repair of Reinforced Concrete Beams with the CFRP Sheet (탄소섬유시트를 사용한 철근콘크리트 구조물의 휨 보강에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper presents the behavior and strenghening effect of reinforced concrete rectangular beams strengthened sing CFRP sheets with different strengthening level. In general, normally strengthened beams are failed by interfacial shear failure (delamination) within concrete, instead of by tensile failure of the CFRP sheets. The delamination occurred suddenly and the concrete cover cracked vertically by flexure was spalled off due to the release energy. The ultimate load considerably increased with an increase of strengthening level, while the ultimate deflection significantly decreased. The tensile force of CFRP sheets and average shear stress of concrete at delamination failure were curvilinearly proportional to the strengthening level. Therefore, the increment of ultimate load obtained by strengthening was curvilinearly proportional to th strengthening level.

  • Existence of void or delamination inside building foundation or tunneling lining can cause serious problems in structural safety. Therefore, 0probing of such voids in architectural and civil structures is an important process in evaluating the overall integrity of the structures. In this study, the radar method has been examined in its use in detecting voids inside concrete specimens. The dimensions of the specimens are 1,000 mm(width) $\times$ 600 mm (height) $\times$ 140 mm (thickness). A void is embedded inside concrete specimens with the dimensions of 200 mm(width) $\times$ 600 mm (height) $\times$ 50 mm (thickness). Concrete cover depth of 30 mm, 60 mm is studied for comparison. In both cases, the voids is located with 1 GHz antenna.

  • Bridge structure is known as one of important infrafacilities for comfortable human life. Recent long-span bridges, such as Kwang-Ahn Grand bridge, Seo-hae Grand Bridge, Young-Jong Grand Bridge, etc, have been designed and constructed near the seaside without in-depth consideration of concrete durability problem. It is in particular noted tat corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete is very important for the durability enhancement of concrete structures. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steels in concrete specimens which are exposed to cyclic wet and dry saltwaters, and then to develop pertinent corrosion protection system such as rational cover depth, corrosion inhibitors, cathodic system for reinforced bridges exposed to marine environment.

  • The reliability of reinforced concrete structures is frequently compromised by the deterioration caused by reinforcement corrosion. Evaluating the effect caused by reinforcement corrosion on structural behaviour of corrosion damaged concrete structures is essential for effective and reliable infrastructure management. In lifecycle management of corrosion affected reinforced concrete structures, it is difficult to correctly assess the lifecycle performance due to the uncertainties associated with structural resistance deterioration. This paper presents a stochastic deterioration modelling approach to evaluate the performance deterioration of corroded concrete structures during their service life. The flexural strength deterioration is analytically predicted on the basis of bond strength evolution caused by reinforcement corrosion, which is examined by the experimental and field data available. An assessment criterion is defined to evaluate the flexural strength deterioration for the time-dependent reliability analysis. The results from the worked examples show that the proposed approach is capable of evaluating the structural reliability of corrosion damaged concrete structures.

Influence of flexural loading on chloride ingress in concrete subjected to cyclic drying-wetting condition

  • Chloride ingress implies a complex interaction between physical and chemical process, in which heat, moisture and chloride ions transport through concrete cover. Meanwhile, reinforced concrete structure itself undergoes evolution due to variation in temperature, relative humidity and creep effects, which can potentially change the deformation and trigger some micro-cracks in concrete. In addition, all of these process show time-dependent performance with complex interaction between structures and environments. In the present work, a time-dependent behavior of chloride transport in reinforced concrete beam subjected to flexural load is proposed based on the well-known section fiber model. The strain state varies because of stress redistribution caused by the interaction between environment and structure, mainly dominated by thermal stresses and shrinkage stress and creep. Finally, in order to clear the influence of strain state on the chloride diffusivity, experiment test were carried out and a power function used to describe this influence is proposed.

  • Recently, to utilize conutry effectively, many concrete structures such as Young Jong Do New Airport. SeoHae Bridege are being constructed. Therefore, Corrosion of steel reinforcement of concrete structures become more and more serious, and prediction of service lives of concrete structures considering steel corrosion is needed much more. The methodologies of predicting service life have been studied for various views, but mathematical modelling based on diffusion theory is generally applied. The purpose of this paper is to investigate current mathematical models, and suggest theoretical basis on estimation of service lives of concrete structures in marine environment. Thus, the procedures for selecting variables such as threshold chloride concentration, diffusion coefficient, etc are suggested, and the service lives calculated through these procedures for various diffusion coefficients and cover depths are presented.

  • Reinforced Concrete structures have been commonly regarded as fire-resisting constructions. In the case of high-strength concrete, however, the behavior of a concrete member under fire and after fire has characteristics in different way with normal strength concrete members because of spalling. The resonable evaluation about the residual strength and stiffness of members as well as material properties has to be conducted before reusing the fire-damaged structures or retrofitting or strengthening them. Therefore, the guideline is needed for evaluation the residual strength and stiffness. In this study, the fire test is conducted with parameters like concrete strength, fire time and cover thickness, etc. The loads-deflection curves are used for comparison and analysis with the parameters.

The strengthened beams were stiffer than the control beam before and after reinforcement yielding. The ultimate load considerably increased with an increase of strengthening level, while the ultimate deflection significantly decreased. The tensile force of CFRP sheets and average shear stress of concrete at delamination failure were curvilinearly proportional to the strengthening level. Therefore, the increment of ultimate load obtained by strengthening was curvilinearly proportional to the strengthening level. The averaged horizontal shear stress of concrete at the interface ranges between (equation omitted) and (equation omitted) (in kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) depending on strengthening level.

A Micro-Mechanics Based Corrosion Model for the Prediction of Service Life in Reinforced Concrete Structures

  • Reinforcing steel bars in reinforced concrete structures are protected from corrosion by passive film on the steel surface inside concrete with high alkalinity. However, when the passive film breaks down due to chloride ion ingressed into the RC structures, a corrosion initiates at the surface of steel bars. Then, internal pressure by volume expansion of corrosion products in reinforcing bars induces cracking and spalling of cover concrete, which reduces not only durability performance but also structural performance in RC structures. In this paper, a service life prediction of RC structures is carried out by using a micro-mechanics based corrosion model. The corrosion model is composed of a chloride penetration model to evaluate the initiation of corrosion and an electric corrosion cell model and an oxygen diffusion model to evaluate the rate and the accumulated amounts of corrosion. Then, a corrosion cracking model is combined to the models to evaluate critical amount of corrosion product for initiation cracking in cover concrete. By implementing the models into a finite element analysis program, a time and space dependent corrosion analysis and a service life prediction of RC structures due to chloride attack are simulated and the results of the analysis are compared with test results. The effect of crack width on the corrosion and the service life of the RC structures are analyzed and discussed.
