  • The present study was to investigate anti-microbial effects of curcumin on major bacterial pathogens for farmed fish, such as Aeromonas hydrophila, A. salmonicida subsp. masoucida, A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida, Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio vulnificus, V. paraheamolyticus using disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) tests. In disc diffusion test, curcumin exhibited concentration-dependent antimicrobial activities to all bacteria pathogens used in the study. Antimicrobial effects of curcumin was found differently depending on bacterial species when determined by MIC or MBC tests. For examples, E. tarda and A. hydrophila was respectively the most sensitive bacterium for bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal effect of curcumin. Collectively, curcumin could be a potential natural drug for controlling pathogenic bacteria in the aquaculture industry.

  • Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of explosive building demolition. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behaviour of concrete columns and the effects of protection materials. Fourteen reinforced columns with two sizes were constructed and the effects of protection materials were tested for two kinds of materials: non woven fabrics and wire net. The results showed that control of gas effects is a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and non woven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection method was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of 16 and 17-strory apartment buildings.and the results of a simulation on a model tunneling workings using diesel equipments are introduced. In case of typical model of tunneling face, the gas concentration of human height is about one third of roof concentration and right side half of the tunnel shows better environment than left half. NOx concentration of workings can be estimated about 0.45ppm which is much lower than permissible level(5 ppm).

  • Antimicrobial studies on reproductive organs have been scarcely reported. Candida albicans and Neisseria gonorrhoea test to find out the natural substances of various concentrations in the antimicrobial experiments have been made. Antimicrobial effect of biopole as the natural compound biosynthesis matter that contain anti-inflammatory material, catechin polyphenols and lactic acid as a single natural substance on C. albicans were of great significance. Also the results of antimicrobial effects of biopole, catechin and lactic acid as a single natural substance on N. gonorrhoea, respectively, showed lower concentration than those of the antimicrobial effects on C. albicans. Through the survival of Lactobacillus acidofillus that acts for the protection of the genital tissue the importance of lactic acid was confirmed. Lactobacillus acidofillus protection and C. albicans firmly into disinfected to low concentrations of the natural mixture from biopole and catechin with lactic acid were found and the antimicrobial effects of this natural mixture on N. gonorrhoea were perfect. C. albicans and N. gonorrhoea to disinfect the optimal natural mixture from 2% concentration biopole, 0.2% concentration of catechin and 2% lactic acid were obtained. Through the survival of Lactobacillus acidofillus in the reproductive organs protectable effects were acquired to prevent the infections of reproductive tissue and the recurrence.

  • This study was performed to determine whether the infusion of nucleosides and a nucleotide mixture directly ito intestinal lumen can induce a regenerative effect on impaired intestinal mucosa. The effects of massive small bowel resention and also total parenteral nutrition were induced by surgical creation of Thirty-Vella fistual in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats received saline solution (Control group) or nucleosides and a nucleotide mixture(lower concentration group(Nucl) or higher concentration group (Nuc2) every two days into the fistula. Mucosal protein, DNA , ornithine decarboxylase(ODC) activity, and morphometry were evaluated at 9 or 21 days postoperation in the fistual and also in the residual ileal segment. On the 9th day, mucosal protein, DNA content, and villous surface area in the fistula and also in the residual ileum increased in rats that received nucleosides and a nucleotide mixture of lower concentration (Nuc 1). On the 21 th day, there were no significant differences in intestinal mucosa between the control group and the lower level nucleoside nucleotide mixture-treated group. The fistula villous height of the higher nucleosides and a nucleotide mixture group was higher than in the control rats. Fistula mucosal ODC activities were not significantly different between groups although the mucosal ODC activity of the residual ileal segment was increased on the 9th day. Our data suggests that this animal model is suitable for studying the effect of dietary factors on intestinal mucosal growth and regeneration after villous stropy , differentiating direct effects of diet on the intestine from systemic effects. It is also suggested that external nucleosides and nucleotides have supportive effects on intestinal mucosal regeneration.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of four clothing cues(hue, tone, skirt width, and skirt length of dress)on female impressions. The experimental materials developed for this study are a set of stimuli and response scales. The Stimuli are 40 color pictures manipulated with four clothing cues by drawing. The 7-point scale designed for visual evaluation of female impression formation includes 29 bipolar adjectives. The subjects were 240 undergraduate female students in Chinju city. The results of this study are as follow: As analyzing the impression of female figure by the hue, tone, skirt width, and length, five factors including ability. activity, elegance, attractiveness, concentration of attention, and tenderness were identified. Among these factors, ability·activity and elegance were proved to be more important. Some interaction effects of clothing cues were found. The combination of skirt width and tone had significant effects on ability. activity. Hue and tone of dress had significant effects on concentration of attention and tenderness. Skirt width and hue, and skirt length and hue had significant effects on the impression of attractiveness. Also skirt length and hue significant effects on concentration of attention.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Alum (AL) and Burnt Alum (BAL), which are commonly used as external ointments. Methods: Extracts of AL and BAL were classified into three groups: 20, 50, and $100mg/{\mu}{\ell}$. The cytotoxicity was measured by using MTT assays in human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT). The anti-oxidant effect was measured by using the DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) radical scavenger. The anti-inflammatory effect was measured by using the inhibitory efficacy for the amount of nitric-oxide (NO) produced in mouse macrophage cell line (RAW 264.7). Results: BAL showed a higher level of cytotoxicity than AL. The AL groups showed a concentration-dependent scavenging effect on DPPH radicals, but no significant relevance was found. The BAL groups showed a concentration-dependent scavenging effect on DPPH radicals. The scavenging effects of the BAL groups were almost insignificant, but the values for the 20, 50, and $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ trials were different. The BAL groups showed significant concentration-dependent inhibitory effects on NO production, but the AL groups did not. Conclusions: AL showed an anti-oxidant effect more efficiently than BAL did, which demonstrated a superior anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, for external usage, AL must be distinguished from BAL.

  • This article studies the effects of heat generation/absorption and thermal radiation on the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Casson fluid flow past a vertical plate through rotating porous medium with constant temperature and mass diffusion. It is assumed that the plate temperature and concentration level are raised uniformly. For finding the exact solution, a set of non-dimensional partial differential equations is solved analytically using the Laplace transform technique. The influence of various non-dimensional parameters on the velocity are discussed, including the effects of the magnetic parameter M, heat generation/absorption Q, thermal radiation parameter R, Prandtl number Pr, Schmidt number Sc, permeability of porous medium parameter, Casson fluid parameter γ, on velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles, which are discussed through several figures. It is found that velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles in the case of heat generation parameter Q, Casson fluid parameter γ, thermal Grashof number Gr, mass Grashof number Gc, Permeability Porous medium parameter K, and time t have retarding effects. It is also seen that the magnetic field M, Thermal Radiation parameter R, Prandtl field Pr, Schmidt number Sc have reverse effects on it.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of weld bead profiles on stress concentration factors of double V groove butt-welded joints. The influence of three parameters such as toe radii, flank angles and bead heights on the stress concentration factors is studied by finite element analysis. It is shown that the three parameters have similar effects on the stress concentration factors. Finally a formula to estimate the stress concentration factors considering the three parameters and others is proposed and estimated results are compared with the results obtained by finite element analysis.

  • The biological fixation of carbon dioxide using microalgae have many advantages over chemicals and remove carbon dioxide simultaneously. A ketocarotenoid astaxanthin is hyper-accumulated in the green freshwater microalga, Haematococcus pluvialis. In the present study, the combine effects of carbon dioxide concentration and light intensity on the growth of H. pluvilais were investigated. The carbon dioxide concentration above 10% caused a severe inhibition and around 5% is optimal for growth. Adaptation to high concentration of carbon dioxide enhanced the $CO_2$ tolerance. Specific growth rate calculated differently based upon cell number or dry weight because of the distinctive life cycle patterns of H. pluvialis : small-sized motile green cell and thick cell walled red cyst cell. Based on the light dependence of H. pluvialis, internally illuminated air-lift photobioreactor was designed and operated. Gradual increase of light supply gave more active growth and more effective productivity of astaxanthin than constant light supply.
