  • In this paper, we propose a packet loss concealment (PLC) algorithm using pitch harmonic motion prediction and adaptive signal amplitude prediction and. The spectral motion prediction method divides the spectral motion of the previous usable frame into predetermined sub-bands to predict and restore the motion of the lost signal. In the proposed algorithm, the speech signal is classified into voiced and unvoiced sounds. In the case of voiced sounds, it is further divided into pitch harmonics using the pitch frequency to predict and restore the pitch harmonic motion of the lost frame, and for the unvoiced sound, the lost frame is restored using the spectral motion prediction method. When the continuous loss of speech frames occurs, a method of adjusting the gain using the least mean square (LMS) predictor is proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated through the objective evaluation method, PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) and was showed MOS 0.1 improvement over the conventional method.

  • This study examined factors affecting the intention to formal and in formal help in adults with recent suicidal thoughts. 215 adults who were recruited through online community participated in the self-report online survey. The results showed that social support had a significant effect on the formal help seeking. Social support, suicide stigma, and self-Concealment had a significant effect on the informal help seeking. In conclusion, social support had a major influence on the intention of asking for help. These results highlight the need for interventions to increase social support and reduce self-concealment in order to increase the request for help for suicide in the high-risk group.

  • In this paper, we propose a new boundary matching method for the temporal error concealment and a post processing algorithm for perceptual quality improvement of the concealed frame. Temporal error concealment is a method that substitutes error blocks with similar blocks from the reference frame. In conventional H.264/AVC standard, it compares outside pixels of erroneous block with inside pixels of reference block to find the most similar block. However, it is very possible that the conventional method substitutes erroneous block with the wrong one because it compares only narrow spatial range of pixels. In this paper, for substituting erroneous blocks with more correct blocks, we propose enhanced boundary matching method by comparing inside and outside pixels of reference block with outside pixels of erroneous block and setting up additional candidate motion vector in the fixed search range based on maximum and minimum value of candidate motion vectors. Furthermore, we propose a post processing method to smooth edges between concealed and decoded blocks without error by using the modified deblocking filter. We identified that the proposed method shows quality improvement of about 0.9dB over the conventional boundary matching methods.

  • Despite of the in-depth effort to cantrol the variability in IP networks, quality of service (QoS) is still not guaranteed in the IP networks. Thus, it is necessary to deal with the audible artifacts caused by packet lasses. To overcame the packet loss problem, most speech coding standard have their own embedded packet loss concealment (PLC) algorithms which adapt extrapolation methods utilizing the dependency on adjacent frames. Since many low bit rate CELP coders use predictive schemes for increasing coding efficiency, however, error propagation occurs even if single packet is lost. In this paper, we propose an efficient PLC algorithm with consideration about the speech characteristics of lost frames. To design an efficient PLC algorithm, we perform several experiments on investigating the error propagation effect of lost frames of a predictive coder. And then, we summarize the impact of packet loss to the speech characteristics and analyze the importance of the encoded parameters depending on each speech classes. From the result of the experiments, we propose a new PLC algorithm that mainly focuses on reducing the error propagation time. Experimental results show that the performance is much higher than conventional extrapolation methods over various frame erasure rate (FER) conditions. Especially the difference is remarkable in high FER condition.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel true-motion estimation technique supporting efficient frame error concealment for error-resilient video coding. In general, it is important to accurately obtain the true-motion of objects in video sequences for effectively recovering the corrupted frame due to transmission errors. However, the conventional motion estimation (ME) technique, which minimizes a sum of absolute different (SAD) between pixels of the current block and the motion-compensated block, does not always reflect the true-movement of objects. To solve this problem, we introduce a new metric called an absolute difference of motion vectors (ADMV) which is the distance between motion vectors of the current block and its motion-compensated block. The proposed ME method can prevent unreliable motion vectors by minimizing the weighted combination of SAD and ADMV. In addition, the proposed ME method can significantly improve the performance of error concealment at the decoder since error concealment using the ADMV can effectively recover the missing motion vector without any information of the lost frame. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides similar coding efficiency to the conventional ME method and outperforms the existing error-resilient method.

  • Lost packet robustness is an most important quality measure for voice over IP networks(VoIP). Recovery of the lost packet from the received information is crucial to realize this robustness. So, this paper proposes the lost packet recovery method from the received information for real-time communication for CELP coder. The proposed BS-PLC (Both Side Packet Loss Concealment) based WSOLA(Waveform Shift OverLab Add) allow the lost packet to be recovered from both the 'previous' and 'next' good packet as the LP parameter and the excitation signal are respectively recovered. The burst of packet loss is modeled by Gilbert model. The proposed scheme is applied to G.729 most used in VoIP and is evaluated through the SNR(signal to noise) and the MOS(Mean Opinion Score) test. As a simulation result, The proposed scheme provide 0.3 higher in Mean Opinion Score and 2 dB higher in terms of SNR than an error concealment procedure in the decoder of G.729 at $20\%$ average packet loss rate.

  • In this paper, the problem of a viewer's head tracking in a desktop-based interactive stereoscopic display system is considered. A fast and low-cost approach to the problem is important for such a computing environment. The system under consideration utilizes a shuttle glass for stereoscopic display. The proposed method makes use of an image taken from a single low-cost video camera. By using a simple feature extraction algorithm, the obtained points corresponding to the image of the user-worn shuttle glass are used to estimate the glass center, its local 'yaw' angle, as measured with respect to the glass center, and its global 'yaw' angle as measured with respect to the camera location. With these estimations, the stereoscopic image synthetic program utilizes those values to interactively adjust the two-view stereoscopic image pair as displayed on a computer screen. The adjustment is carried out such that the so-obtained stereoscopic picture, when viewed from a current user position, provides a close-to-real perspective and depth perception. However, because the algorithm and device used are designed for fast computation, the estimation is typically not precise enough to provide a flicker-free interactive viewing. An error concealment method is thus proposed to alleviate the problem. This concealment method should be sufficient for applications that do not require a high degree of visual realism and interaction.
