NUMERICAL SIMULATION AND VISUALIZATION OF THE FLOW AROUND THE DARIUS WIND TURBINE

  • A fundamental understanding of the flow around the wind turbine is important to investigate the performance of new type of wind turbine. This study presents the simulation of three dimensional flow fields around the Darius wind turbine as an example. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are used for this simulation. The rotating coordinate system that rotates in the same speed of the turbine is used in order to simplify the boundary condition on the blades. Additionally, the boundary fitted coordinate system is employed in order to express the shape of the blades precisely. Fractional step method is used to solve the basic equations. Third order upwind scheme is chosen for the approximation of the non-linear terms since it can compute the flow field stably even at high Reynolds number without any turbulence models. The flow fields obtained in this study are highly complex due to the three dimensionality and are visualized effectively by using the technique of the computer graphics.

  • This paper focuses on a number of criteria that enable controlling the influence of geometric simplification on the quality of finite element (FE) computations. To perform the mechanical simulation of a component, the corresponding geometric model typically needs to be simplified in accordance with hypotheses adopted regarding the component's mechanical behaviour. The method presented herein serves to compute an a posteriori indicator for the purpose of estimating the significance of each feature removal. This method can be used as part of an adaptive process of geometric simplification. If a shape detail removed during the shape simplification process proves to be influential on mechanical behaviour, the particular detail can then be reinserted into the simplified model, thus making it possible to readapt the initial simulation model. The fields of application for such a method are: static problems involving linear elastic behaviour, and linear thermal problems with stationary conduction.

  • For simulation of a wing unfolding motion for the various aerodynamic conditions, equation governing unfolding motion and moments applying to the unfolding wing were modelled. Aerodynamic roll moment consists of the static roll moment and the damping moment, which were obtained through wind tunnel tests and numerical analyses respectively. Panel method was used to compute the roll damping coefficient with twisted wing, whose deflection angle was equivalent to angle of attack due to the deployment motion. Roll damping coefficient is a function of angle of attack, sideslip angle, and deployment angle but not of angular velocity of deployment. Simulation with aerodynamic damping model gave more similar deployment time compared to wing deployment test results.

  • Recent studies among various activities taking place in order-picking warehouse system have shown various researches to reduce the order-picking costs occupying more than half the total costs. One way of improving the warehouse system performance is to separate from a picking area and a reserve area in one unit rack. This study is concerned on the performance evaluation model for picking and replenishing facility of refrigerated warehouse using simulation method. In this study, we developed a mathematical model to compute the system performance solve this problem using simulation method. We demonstrate the system performance using AutoMod Simulator and verify the results to compare mathematical results of the system performance of warehouse system. A systematic approach proposed n this study for an optimal planning of order-picking warehouse is known as an effective method for planning of order-picking warehouse and a performance evaluation problem considering both picking and replenishment.

  • This paper describes a data structure and evaluation algorithm to improve the perofmrances MOS logic-with-timing simulation in computation and accuracy. In order to efficiently simulate the logic and timing of driver-load networks, (1) a tree data structure to represent the mutual interconnection topology of switches and nodes in the driver-lod network, and (2) an algebraic modeling to efficiently deal with the new represetnation, (3) an evaluation algorithm to compute the linear resistive and capacitive behavior with the new modeling of driver-load networks are developed. The higher modeling presented here supports the structural and functional compatibility with the linear switch-level to simulate the logic-with-timing of digital MOS circuits at a mixed-level. This research attempts to integrate the new approach into the existing simulator RSIM, which yield a mixed-klevel logic-with-timing simulator MIXIM. The experimental results show that (1) MIXIM is a far superior to RSIM in computation speed and timing accuracy; and notably (2) th etiming simulation for driver-load netowrks produces the accuracy ranged within 17% with respect ot the analog simulator SPICE.

  • For the simulation of the blood flow in coronary artery, the system modeling of coronary hemodynamics is combined with CFD technique. The blood flow in coronary artery interacts with the global coronary circulation. Especially in case of the coronary artery with stenosis, the interaction plays an important role in the hemodynamics of the circulation. In this study we present a combined numerical approach using both the CFD technique for flow simulation and the global system model of coronary circulation. We use a lumped parameter model for the global simulation of coronary circulation whereas the finite element method is employed to compute the viscous flow field in stenosed coronary artery, The time variation of the pressure drop due to stenosis is obtained from the proposed numerical method. Numerical results shows that the flow resistance and pressure drop due to stenosis has a relatively large value in systole.

  • This paper deals with a performance evaluation model of transporters in refrigerate warehouse. This study focussed on determining refrigerate warehouse design to minimize the expected travel time to improve the transporter performance and to minimize the operating costs. This study proposes the important detail aspects of refrigerate warehouse design, operational parameters and congestions. For solving this problem, we have shown a mathematical model to compute the initial value of the system performance and also a simulation model using AutoMod. A systematic approach proposed in this study for an optimal planning of order-picking warehouse is known as an effective method for the planning of order-picking warehouse and a performance evaluation problem of refrigerate warehouse operation.

  • High speed casting technology is an attractive method to increase the productivity of continuous casting. However, high speed casting causes flow instability of molten steel in a mold. In this study, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been performed to identify the characteristics of mold flow for various shapes of submerged entry nozzles. The LES code has been newly developed to efficiently compute the two-phase flow by using the Fractional Step Method (FSM) combined with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. The Immersed Boundary Method was used to implement the shape of the submerged entry nozzle. Three cases of discharge angle of the submerged entry nozzle were computed and compared. The current results shed light on improving shape design of a submerged entry nozzle.

  • Daylight is highly beneficial for improving the indoor environmental quality and reducing building energy consumption, daylighting applications are scarcely considered, especially during the Rural standard house models design process, because of lack of previous studies on elderly-light environment and complex simulation process. Therefore, daylighting process were performed using ECOTECT, which has various advantage such as easy user interface and simple simulation processes. Moreover, dynamic daylight simulation were performed using whether data. Static simulation are performed to compute static metrics such as daylight factor, whereas dynamic simulation are performed for dynamic metrics such as daylight autonomy and useful daylight illuminance using annual weather data On the basis of daylight autonomy and useful daylight illuminance analysis result, variations in annual daylight performances. A parametric and regression analysis of the window-to-wall ratio and visible transmittance showed that daylight factor, daylight autonomy increased with window-to-wall ratio and visible transmittance. It can be concluded that this new daylight criteria. useful daylight illuminance, will enable architect to obtain better fenestration design.
