Recently, Xue et al. [Computers and Mathematics with Applications 55 (2008) 1215-1224] proposed a formula for the expected value of a function of a fuzzy variable based on the assumption that the fuzzy variable has a continuous membership function. In conclusion, they remained the case where the membership function of the fuzzy variable is discontinuous for the future research, and then expected to get similar results. Thus this note is to propose a new formula for the expected value of a function of a general fuzzy variable which is not restricted on having a continuous membership function. Furthermore, we give an example which cannot be applied to the formula that Xue et al. proposed. We also use the same example given by Xue et al. to show how to apply the new formula.
Welded connections have been designed on basis of allowable stresses, wherein the response to loading is assumed to be totally elastic. This is the vector analysis method, which resolves the stresses determined from the direct stress formula and the torsion formula into a vector combination to obtain a solution. It has been known that this method gives conservative answers and typically a very high factor of safety. An analytical method based on the Instantaneous Center of Rotation has been developed which predicts the ultimate strength of an eccentically loaded fillet welded connection. The method of Instantaneous Center of Rotation results in weld resistance capacities greater than the vector analysis method, by recognizing the variation in fillet weld strength with respect to the direction of the applied loading and actual load-deformation response of elemental fillet welds. The procedure of numerical analysis is iterative and complex. The relations between vector analysis method and the method of Instantaneous Center of Rotation on eccentrical distance subjected to variation of load direction are presented in this paper. Considering of the effects on configuration of weld groups, the method of Instantaneous Center of Rotation are provided a more exact results of the numerical analysis.
This study a reliability based design criteria for the Pile foundation, Which is common type of bridge founfation, and also proposes the theoretical bases limit state equations of stalbility analvsis of Pile foundation and the uncertainty measuring algorithms of each equation are also derived by MFOSM using the pile reations of displacement method, Terzaghi's bearing capacity formula, and chang's lateral load formula. The Level of uncertainties comesponding to these algorithms are proposed approprite values considering our actuality. It may be asserted that the proposed LRFD reliability based design criteria for the pile foundation may have to be incorporated in to the current Highway Bridge Design codes as a design provision corresponding to the USD(or LFD) provisions of the current Highway Bridge Design Code.
A method for shape design sensitivity analysis for axisymmetric shells of general shapes is developed. The basic approach is to divide the structures into many segments. For each of the segments, the formula for a shallow arch or shell can be applied and the results assembled. To interconnect those segments, the existing sensitivity formula, obtained for a variation only in the direction perpendicular to the plane on which the structure is mapped, has been extended to include a variation normal to the middle surface. The method follows the adjoint variable approach based on the material derivative concept as established in the literature. Numerical examples are taken to illustrate the method and the applicability to practical design problems.
The elastic buckling strength of a corrugated culvert made of orthotropic material such as FRP was evaluated. The height and length of a corrugated wave and the thickness of the culvert were considered as factors affecting the buckling strength of the culvert. And also, the ratio of the longitudinal stiffness and transverse stiffness was considered as the parameter affecting on the buckling strength of the used orthotropic material. Buckling strengths of various corrugated culvert models with different shapes and stiffness ratio were evaluated by FE analyses and a formula to estimate the elastic buckling strength was suggested from the regression with FE analysis results. Analysis results show that a corrugated culvert has superior buckling strength to a general flat pipe and the suggested formula estimates accurate buckling strength of the corrugated culverts made of orthotropic material.
The elastic budding strength of a GFRP pipe reinforced with ribs was evaluated. The height and thickness of a rib and the spacing between two adjacent ribs were considered as factors affecting tlje budding strength of the pipe. And also, the ratio of the longitudinal stiffness and transverse stiffness was considered as the parameter affecting on the budding strength because GFRP is orthotropic material. Buckling strengths of various GFRP pipe models with different shapes and stiffness ratio were evaluated by FE analyses and a formula to estimate the elastic buckling strength of a rib-reinforced pipe made of orthotropic material was suggested from the regression with FE analysis results. Analysis results show that a rib-reinforced pipe has superior buckling strength to a general flat pipe and the suggested formula estimates accurate buckling strength of the rib-reinforced pipe.
A unified numerical method for computing the quadrature weights, integration matrix, and differentiation matrix is newly developed in this study. For this purpose, a spline-like interpolation using piecewise continuous polynomials is converted into a global spline interpolation formula, with which the quadrature formulas can be derived from integration and differentiation of the transformed function in an exact manner. To prove the usefulness of the suggested approach, both the Lagrange and tension spline interpolations are represented in exactly the same form as global spline interpolation. The applicability of the proposed method on arbitrary nodes is illustrated using two different sets of nodes. A series of validations using three test functions is conducted to show the flexibility in selecting computational nodes with the present method.
In this paper we define the $L_p$-mixed curvature function of a convex body. We develop a formula connection the support function of $L_p$-mixed projection body with Fourier transform of the $L_p$-mixed curvature function. Using this formula we solve an analog of the Shephard projection problem for $L_p$-mixed projection bodies.
Elastomeric bearings are frequently used as a means to isolate structural systems from earthquake loadings. The combination of rubber layers and reinforcing steel shims makes the bearings stiff axially but soft laterally The shear flexibility of these short columns can lead to relatively low buckling loads which may be further reduced when high shear strains are simultaneously imposed. The area reduction formula has been proposed to account for the reduction in buckling load due to shear. The result obtained from the formula is presumed to be conservative but the degree of conservatism is unknown. This paper describes a numerical study which aims at determining the effect of high shear strain on the critical load of rubber bearings. The results from the finite element analysis which accounts for both the material and geometric non-linearities are compared against the theoretical results in order to examine the validity of the theoretical formulas.
