In the assessment of existing RC buildings, the reliable appraisal of the compressive strength of in-situ concrete is a fundamental step. Unfortunately, the data that can be obtained by the available testing methods are typically affected by a high level of uncertainty. Moreover, in order to derive indications about the degradation and ageing of the materials by on site tests, it is necessary to have the proper terms of comparison, that is to say, to know the reference data measured during the construction phases, that are often unavailable when the building is old. In the cases when such a comparison can be done, the in situ strength values typically turn out to be lower than the reference strength values (tests performed on taken samples during the construction). At this point, it is crucial to discern and quantify the specific effect induced by different factors: ageing of the materials; poor quality of the placement, consolidation or cure of the concrete during the construction phases; damage due to drilling. This paper presents a procedure for correlating the destructive compressive tests and non-destructive tests (ultrasonic pulse velocity tests) with the data documenting the compressive strength tested during the construction phases. The research work is aimed at identifying the factors that induce the difference between the in-situ strength and cubes taken from the concrete casting, and providing, so, useful information for the assessment procedure of the building.
The developments of double skin composite (DSC) walls with novel enhanced C-channel connectors (DSCW-EC) were reported. Followed axial compression tests on prototype walls were carried to evaluate structural performances of this novel DSC composite structures. The testing program consists of five specimens and focused on the layout of the novel enhanced C-channel (EC) connectors, which include the web direction of C-channels, steel-faceplate thickness, vertical and horizontal spacing of C-channels. Crushing in concrete core and buckling of steel faceplate were two main observed failed modes from the compression tests. However, elastic or plastic buckling of the steel faceplate varies with designed parameters in different specimens. The influences of those investigated parameters on axial compressive behaviors of DSCW-ECs were analyzed and discussed. Recommendations on the layout of novel EC connectors were then given based on these test results and discussions. This paper also developed analytical models for predictions on ultimate compressive resistance of DSCW-ECs. Validation against the reported test results show that the developed theoretical models predict well the ultimate compressive resistance of DSCW-ECs.

A non-destructive testing (NDT) method for evaluating physical properties of concrete including the compressive strength is highly desirable. This paper presents such an NDT method based on measurement of electromagnetic (EM) properties of the material. Experiments are carried out on cement mortar with different water/cement (W/C) ratios. Their EM properties including the conductivity and the dielectric constant are measured at different exposure conditions and curing periods over a wide frequency range of the EM wave. The compressive strength of these specimens is also tested. It is found that both the conductivity and the dielectric constant increase as the W/C ratio decreases and the curing period increases, which lead strength development in the specimens. A linear correlation is observed between the averaged EM properties over the 5 to 20 GHz frequency range and the measured compressive strength, demonstrating the effectiveness of the EM property-based NDT method in evaluating strength of OPC mortar.

Interfacial and microfailure properties of carbon liber/bismaleimide (BMI) composites were evaluated using both tensile fragmentation and compressive Broutman tests with acoustic emission (AE). Since BMI is rather difficult matrix to apply for the conventional fragmentation test because of its too low elongation and too brittle and high modulus properties, dual matrix composite system was applied. After carbon fiber/BMI composite was prepared for rod shape by controlling differing curing stage, composites rod was embedded in toughened epoxy as outer matrix. The typical microfailure modes including fiber break, matrix cracking, and interlayer failure were observed during tensile testing, whereas the diagonal slippage in fiber ends was observed during compressive test. On the other hand, AE amplitudes of BMI matrix fracture were higher than carbon fiber tincture under tensile test because BMI matrix has very brittle and high modulus. The waveform of signals coming from BMI matrix fractures was consistent with AE amplitude result under tensile tests.
This paper examines the applicability of artificial neural network (ANN) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) to predict the compressive strength of bacteria incorporated geopolymer concrete (GPC). The mix is composed of new bacterial strain, manufactured sand, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, metakaolin and fly ash. The concentration of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is maintained at 8 Molar, sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) to NaOH weight ratio is 2.33 and the alkaline liquid to binder ratio of 0.35 and ambient curing temperature ($28^{\circ}C$) is maintained for all the mixtures. In ANN, back-propagation training technique was employed for updating the weights of each layer based on the error in the network output. Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used for feed-forward back-propagation. MARS model was developed by establishing a relationship between a set of predictors and dependent variables. MARS is based on a divide and conquers strategy partitioning the training data sets into separate regions; each gets its own regression line. Six models based on ANN and MARS were developed to predict the compressive strength of bacteria incorporated GPC for 1, 3, 7, 28, 56 and 90 days. About 70% of the total 84 data sets obtained from experiments were used for development of the models and remaining 30% data was utilized for testing. From the study, it is observed that the predicted values from the models are found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values and the developed models are robust and reliable.
In this article, Multi-Gene Genetic Programming (MGGP) is proposed for the estimation of the compressive strength of concrete. MGGP is known to be a powerful algorithm able to find a relationship between certain input space features and a desired output vector. With respect to most conventional machine learning algorithms, which are often used as "black boxes" that do not provide a mathematical formulation of the output-input relationship, MGGP is able to identify a closed-form formula for the input-output relationship. In the study presented in this article, MGPP was used to predict the compressive strength of plain concrete, concrete with fly ash, and concrete with furnace slag. A formula was extracted for each mixture and the performance and the accuracy of the predictions were compared to the results of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) algorithms, which are conventional and well-established machine learning techniques. The results of the study showed that MGGP can achieve a desirable performance, as the coefficients of determination for plain concrete, concrete with ash, and concrete with slag from the testing phase were equal to 0.928, 0.906, 0.890, respectively. In addition, it was found that MGGP outperforms ELM in all cases and its' accuracy is slightly less than ANN's accuracy. However, MGGP models are practical and easy-to-use since they extract closed-form formulas that may be implemented and used for the prediction of compressive strength.
Strength prediction and correlation of concrete is done using experimental and analytical methods. Main objective is to correlate the experimental and simulated values of compressive strength of concrete mix using Fly Ash (FA) and Silica Fume (SF) by partial replacement of cement in concrete. Mix proportion was determined using IS method for M40grade concrete. Hundred and forty-seven cubes were cast and tested using Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Genetic Algorithm (GA) model was developed using C++ program to simulate the compressive strength of concrete for various proportions of FA and SF replacements individually at 3% increments. Experiments reveal that 12 percent silica fume replacement produced maximum compressive strength of 35.5 N/mm2, 44.5 N/mm2 and 54.8 N/mm2 moreover 9 percent fly ash replacement produced a maximum strength of 31.9 N/mm2, 37.6 N/mm2 and 51.8 N/mm2 during individual material replacement of concrete mix. Correlation coefficient for each curing period of fly ash and silica fume replaced mix were acquired using trend lines. The correlation coefficient is found to be approximately 0.9 in FA and SF replaced mix irrespective of the mix proportion and age of concrete. A higher and positive correlation was found between the experimental and simulated values irrespective of the curing period in all the replacements.

The aim of this study was to compare compressive strength and microhardness of recently introduced alkasite restorative materials with glass ionomer cement and flowable composite resin. For each material, 20 samples were prepared respectively for compressive strength and Vickers microhardness test. The compressive strength was measured with universal testing machine at crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. And microhardness was measured using Vickers Micro hardness testing machine under 500 g load and 10 seconds dwelling time at 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 35 days. The compressive strength was highest in composite resin, followed by alkasite, and glass ionomer cement. In microhardness test, composite resin, which had no change throughout experimental periods, showed highest microhardness in 1 hour, 1 day, and 7 days measurement. The glass ionomer cement showed increase in microhardness for 7 days and no difference was found with composite resin after 14 days measurement. For alkasite, maximum microhardness was measured on 14 days, but showed gradual decrease.
This paper describes 3D Dimensional Measurement(EDM testing) and tensile testing results of carbody structure for crashed EMU(Electric Multiple Units). Tensile tests were performed on two different types of specimens in order to evaluate the strength changes before and after damages, obtained from plastic deformed area and nondeformed region of the crashed EMU. And Structural analysis of EMU was performed for the criteria of safety assessment. Structural analysis using commercial I-DEAS software provided important information on the stress distribution and load transfer mechanisms as well as the amount of damages during rolling stock crash. The testing results have been used to provide the critical information for the criteria of safety diagnosis.
