  • To evaluate the strength of square reinforced concrete shot columns, thirty specimens were manufactured and tested under monotonically increasing concentric compression. The test parameters included the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement($\rho$h = 0.49~2.65), and concrete compressive strength (234, 437, 704 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). Test results are shown that : (1) Behavior of high -strength concrete column is improved by providing increased volumetric ratio; and (2) ACI, Eq. is not proper to evaluate HSC short column strength.

  • In this paper, we investigate a simplified model of a particle suspended elastically from two towers by two nonlinear elastic springs, with a restoring force similar to Hooke’s law under extension and with no resistance to compression. Numerical results are presented, showing the solutions can be either of the same period oscillation the forcing term, can be a subharmonic response of multiple period, or can be noisy periodic which is apparently chaotic. Multiplicity of periodic solutions for certain physical parameters are demonstrated.

  • A pressure-based BOIK model considering Shock to Detonation Transition(SDT) and damage due to external fragment or bullet stimuli impact on energetic materials and analytical approach for determination of free parameters are proposed. The rate of product mass fraction(${\lambda}$) consists of ignition term that represents the initiation due to shock compression and growth term that describes propagation of detonation wave and strain term representing the morphological deformation induced by external impact.

  • Tumbling motion is very effective for turbulence enhancement during compression process in the cylinder of 4-valve engines. In this paper the tumble decay mechanism for different intake port configuration were measured using laser Doppler velocimetry. Analysis of the tumble decay mechanism was achieved by means of two non-dimensional parameters, defined as tumble eccentricity and shape factor in tumble velocity profile, in addition to the tumble moment.

  • In this paper, a new watermarking method using an iterative scheme is proposed. The proposed method consists of two parts: watermark generation and its insertion. In the watermark generation, random signals with normalized distribution N(0,1) are produced and modified using an iterative scheme. In the watermark insertion, the resulting watermark signals are inserted into selected transform coefficients with various scaling parameters in order to achieve the invisibility and robustness against illegal attacks. The simulation results show that the proposed method has good performance for various attacks including image compression, filtering, etc.

  • For Markov graphic source, it is well known that the conditional runlength coding for the runs of correct prediction is optimum for data compression. However, because of the simplicity in counting and the stronger concentration in distrubution, the incremental run is possibly a better parameter for coding than the run itself for some cases. It is shown that the incremental-runlength is also geometrically distributed as the runlength itself. The distribution is explicitly described with the basic parameters defined for a Markov model.

  • Tubular joints of jacket structures are usually reinforced using thicker can section, internally ring stiffeners, diaphragm, or externally gusset plates to increase load carry capacity. In this paper, the effect of reinforcement type and geometric parameters of stiffener on the ultimate strength of tubular X-joints subjected to brace compression have been studied numerically Three reinforcement methods were considered; (1)can reinforcement (2)internally ring stiffener (3)internally longitudinal diaphragm. The ANSYS software was used nonlinear strength analysis. It was found that there is significant strength enhancement for reinforced joints.

  • The effect of various parameters on the propagation of surface waves in electro-magneto thermoelastic orthotropic granular non-homogeneous medium subjected to gravity and initial compression has been studied. All material coefficients are obeyed the same exponent-law dependence on the depth of the granular elastic half space. Some special cases investigated by earlier researchers have also been deduced. Dispersion curves are computed numerically and presented graphically.

  • The soil parameters important for the design of the soft ground are the compression index ($C_c$), the consolidation settlement and consolidation speed at the field. Compression index is obtained by laboratory consolidation test. In the laboratory consolidation test, sample disturbance always occurs. In order to correct the disturbance phenomena, the method of calculating the compression index proposed by Schmertmann (1955) is generally used. However, recent developments in sampling technology and Korean soil conditions are different from those proposed by Schmertmann. So it needs to be verified. In this study, each consolidation curve's cross void ratio is evaluated by doing consolidation test varying disturbance on high-plastic clay (CH), low-plastic clay (CL) and low-plastic silt (ML). The test results were $0.521e_0$ for low-plastic silt, $0.404e_0$ for low-plastic clay, and $0.458e_0$ for the high-plastic clay. This results were different from those of Schmertmann's suggested value of $0.42e_0$. Therefor we proposed a correction formula using the plastic index according to soil type. However, since the results of this study are limited test results, further studies on various korean soil are needed to suggest the compression index correction method according to the degree of plasticity index of soil.
