  • Accurate and effective powder compaction analyses are performed for brittle materials such as graphite, utilized as a solid lubricant, by using the discrete element method (DEM). The reliability of the DEM analysis is confirmed by comparing the results of graphite powder compaction analyses using the DEM particle bonding contact model and particle non-bonding contact model with those from the powder compaction experiment under the same conditions. To improve the characteristics, the parameters influencing the compaction properties of the metal-graphite mixtures are explored. The compressibility increases as the size distribution of the graphite powder increases, where the shape of the graphite particles is uniform. The improved compaction characteristics of the metal-graphite (bonding model) mixtures are further verified by the stress transmission and compressive force distribution between the top and bottom punches. It is confirmed that the application of graphite (bonding model) powders resulted in improved stress transmission and compressive force distribution of 24% and 85%, respectively.

  • To predict the airloads on helicopter rotors in hover, the doublet panel method of the first order is applied. For this simulation, the rotor blade is divided into many panels both in spanwise and in chordwise direction, and Kocurek-Tangler's prescribed wake with roll-up process is taken for determing wake geometry and then represented by vortex lattice. To abtain more physically realistic calculation of induced velocity, the vortex core model is adopted and the compressibility effect is considered by Karman-Tsien rule.

  • In this study, a position and force simultaneous trajectory tracking control algorithm is proposed for a driving apparatus that consists of two pneumatic cylinders connected in series. The controller applied to the driving apparatus is composed of a non-interaction controller to compensate for interaction between cylinders and a disturbance observer aimed to reduce the effect of model discrepancy that cannot be compensated by the non-interaction controller. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is proved by experimental results.

  • This paper presents modeling and simulation of the bump foil bearings with consideration of the elastic behavior of the foil and gas compressibility. Heshmat had originally introduced the simple compliance model to estimate the EHL(elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication) performance. But this approach can not consider the deflection of top foil at the edge of bearing, so model is insufficient to analyze in case that the eccentricity ratio is greater than I. So the top foil is considered as a simple beam model supported by linear spring elements, and the bump foil deflection can be simple compliance model. The EHL calculations are performed for convention rigid type, classical foil type, variable pitch type and double bump type toil bearings. This paper presents that 2nd or 3rd generation bearings have excellent performance in every speeds.

  • This paper presents a design scheme of model reference adaptive control incorporating a Neural Network for a pneumatic servo system. The parameters of discrete-time model of plant are estimated by using the recursive least square method. Neural Network is utilized in order to compensate the nonlinear nature of plant such as compressibility of air and frictions present in cylinder. The experiment of a trajectory tracking control using the proposed control scheme has been performed and its effectiveness has been proved by comparing with the results of a model reference adaptive control.

  • Thermoplastic film infusion process was investigated by using a rubber tool, which intrinsically contains a thermally-expandable characteristic and effectively compensates for the pressure loss caused by thermoplastic polymer infusion. Increasing temperature up to the melting temperature of matrix, the polymer melt subsequently infused into the dry fabric, but the pressure was successfully sustained by the rubber tool. Even with the decreased resin volume, the rubber tool produced sufficiently high elastic force for continuous resin infusion. Combining D'Arcy's law with the compressibility of rubber tool and elastic fiber bed, a film infusion model was developed to predict the resin infusion rate and pressure change as a function of time. In addition, the film infusion process without the rubber tool was viewed and analyzed by a compression process of the elastic fiber bed and viscous resin melt. The compressibility of fiber bed was experimentally measured and the multiple-step resin infusion was well described by the developed model equations.

  • This paper describes the air flow characteristics inside the throttle valve. Tow-dimensional steady incompressible Navier-Strokes equation are solved numerically with embedding the conceopt of the artificial compressibility and adopting the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. With varying the valve opening angles(the Reynolds number )such as 15$^{\circ}$(5000) , 45$^{\circ}$(3000) , 75$^{\circ}$(7000) and 90$^{\circ}$(10000), respectively. tow cases, with a valve shaft and without one, are analysed. The pressure loss between the entrance and exit is severe at 15$^{\circ}$, 100 times as larger as that of 90$^{\circ}$ case, which also depends much on the existece of the valve shaft. The counter rotating vortices are formed over the valve plate with the shaft at only 75$^{\circ}$. They are smally and very large scale in front and back of the valve shaft , respectively. The velocity profiles of 15$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ at the exit are almost symmetric to the horizontal center line, however, the symmetricity is no longer maintained at 45$^{\circ}$ and 75$^{\circ}$ , and in addition, the flow at 75$^{\circ}$ is enforced a lot below center line. The pressure distribution on the walls is largely changed near the valve shaft, and its magnitude becomes great as the valve angle decreases.

  • A three dimensional numerical analysis has been conducted to analyze the effects of a pipe angle, connecting a combustion chamber and a pintle nozzle, and pintle position on pintle nozzle performance. The compressibility correction of $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulent model was implemented to precisely predict the characteristics of complex flow structures inside a supersonic pintle nozzle. Due to an 3-D asymmetric pintle nozzle configuration, complex helical flow streamlines and large flow separations were observed, which resulting in significant nozzle performance losses. As the angle of connection-tube decreases, the coefficient of performance increases and Since the flow structures are evidently changed to the pintle stroke position, the performance characteristics was analyzed.

  • In order to simulate a free surface flow in a trench channel, a three-dimensional incompressible unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are closed with the ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model. The artificial compressibility (AC) method is used. Because the pressure fields can be coupled directly with the velocity fields, the incompressible Navier-Stokes (INS) equations can be solved for the unknown variables such as velocity components and pressure. The governing equations are discretized in a conservation form using a second order accurate finite volume method on non-staggered grids. In order to prevent the oscillatory behavior of computed solutions known as odd-even decoupling, an artificial dissipation using the flux-difference splitting upwind scheme is applied. To enhance the efficiency and robustness of the numerical algorithm, the implicit method of the Beam and Warming method is employed. The treatment of the free surface, so-called interface-tracking method, is proposed using the free surface evolution equation and the kinematic free surface boundary conditions at the free surface instead of the dynamic free surface boundary condition. AC method in this paper can be applied only to the hydrodynamic pressure using the decomposition into hydrostatic pressure and hydrodynamic pressure components. In this study, the boundary-fitted grids are used and advanced each time the free surface moved. The accuracy of our RANS solver is compared with the laboratory experimental and numerical data for a fully turbulent shallow-water trench flow. The algorithm yields practically identical velocity profiles that are in good overall agreement with the laboratory experimental measurement for the turbulent flow.

  • The ability of turbulence model to accurately describe the complex characteristics of the flow field and the fuel spray is of great importance in the optimum design of diesel engine. The numerical simulations of the flow field and the spray characteristics within the combustion chamber of direct injection model entgine are performed to examine the applicability of turbulence model. The turbulence models used are the RNG $\varepsilon$ model and the modified $\varepsilon$ model which included the compressibility effect due to the compression/expansion of the charges. In this study, the predicted results in the quiescent condition of direct injection model engine show reasonable trends comparing with the experimental data of spray characteristics, i. e., spray tip penetration, spray tip velocity. The results of eddy viscosity obtained using the $\varepsilon$ model in the spray region is significantly larger than that obtained using the RNG $\varepsilon$ model. The application of the RNG model seems to have some potential for the simulations of the spray characteristics, e. g., spray tip penetration, spray tip velocity, droplets distribution over the $\varepsilon$ model.
