Concrete infill and reinforcement are one of the most well-known strengthening methods of structural elements. This study investigated flexural performance of concrete infill composite PHC pile (ICP pile) reinforced by infill concrete and longitudinal rebars in hollow PHC pile. A total four series of pile specimens were tested by four points bending method under simply supported conditions and investigated bending moment experimentally and analytically. From the test results, it was found that although reinforcement of infilled concrete on the pure bending moment of PHC pile was negligible, reinforcement of PHC pile using infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars increase the maximum bending moment with range from 1.95 to 2.31 times than that of conventional PHC pile. The error of bending moment between experimental results and predicted results by nonlinear sectional analysis on the basis of the conventional layered sectional approach was in the range of -2.54 % to 2.80 %. The axial compression and moment interaction analysis for ICP piles shows more significant strengthening effects of infilled concrete and longitudinal rebars.

In this study, a series of triaxial compression tests(CU) were performed with artificially remolded sand-pack-clay and sand-clay composite soils at 10% and 20% replacement ratio to compare the shear strength and behavior characteristics between sand compaction pile and pack pile. From the test results, the shear strength of the pack pile is much higher than the that of the sand compaction pile.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to the field application cost effectively and reasonably by developing the functional piles that reinforces shear force. CFP pile (Concrete Filled Pretensioned Spun High Strength Concrete Pile with Ring type Composite shear connectors) developed in this study increases the shear stress by placing composite shear connector and filling the concrete into hollow part of the pile. By placing the reinforcement (H13-8ea) and the reinforcement (H19-8ea) into hollow section inside of PHC piles, it also improves the shear strength due to increasing steel ratio. It reinforces shear strength effectively by dowel force that is generated by putting reinforcement (H13-8) into the holes of composite shear connectors for the composite behavior of filled concrete and PHC pile. The study was reviewed and compared the calculated result of the shear strength by limit state design method highway bridge design standards (2012) and experiment result of the shear strength by KS F 4306. We can design the shear strength reasonably as the safety ratio of 2.20, 2.15, 2.05 is shown comparing to design shear strength, according to design shear strength on each cross sections and the experiment results of the CFP pile.

Recently, the demand for large diameter piles has been rapidly increased in order to secure the allowable bearing capacity of pile foundation due to the increase of large structures such as high rise buildings. In this study, to improve the shear capacity of a conventional PHC pile, a large diameter composite PHC pile strengthened by in-filled concrete and shear reinforcement was manufactured. All the piles were tested according to the shear strength test method of Korean Standard. As a result of the shear test, the F-type piles which are produced without shear reinforcement occurred abrupt horizontal cracks after flexural and inclined shear cracks occurred. On the contrary, the FT-type piles which are produced with shear reinforcement exhibited stable flexural and inclined shear cracks uniformly over the entire pile without abrupt horizontal cracks. Furthermore, the maximum load of the large diameter composite PHC pile improved to 2.9 times in the F series, and more than 3.3 times in the FT series compared to the conventional PHC pile. This result indicated that FT-type piles had excellent composite behavior due to the shear reinforcement and effectively prevented the unstable growth of inclined shear cracks.

Generally, application of steel pile as deep foundation member needs specials requirement for the connection method between steel pipe and concrete footing. To investigate real compressive behavior of connection member between steel pipe pile and concrete footing, three specimens were tested with carefully designed experimental system. Main test variable is the connection method between steel pipe pile and concrete footing. The bolted bonding method and hook bonding method was considered as the connection method in this study. From the test results gained from experiment, it was conformed that two types of connection method have the almost same compressive resistance capacity. Therefore, we can conclude that these two connection methods can be used as the strengthening method to verify the compressive composite action of concrete and steel pipe pile.

In this study, the joint part of non-welding composite pile is investigated by a three dimensional finite element analysis. Special attention is given to the overall stress distribution under lateral, axial and tensional load conditions. Through comparisons with allowable stress of materials, a simple method is proposed to estimate the ultimate load condition of joint part. The appropriate design method is suggested and highlighted through the numerical analysis.

Various kinds of shear connector such as headed stud, channel, perforated steel plate and others are commonly used to transfer stress and present composite performance in composite structures, and many researches have been conducted to improve the characteristics of different types of shear connectors. It is focused in this study on the bending performance of steel pipe pile cap with the open type perforated shear connector for the composite connection to the spread footing. Nonlinear analysis was conducted, using ABAQUS, a finite element analysis program, to obtain information for determining the characteristics of the structure and to allow various parametric analysis for bending performance of steel pipe pile cap with the open perforated shear connector.

Due to the advantageous mechanical properties of the fiber reinforced polymeric plastics(FRP), their application in the construction industries is ever increasing trend, as a substitute of structural steel which is highly vulnerable under hazardous environmental conditions (i.e., corrosion, humidity, etc.). In this study, hybrid FRP-concrete composite pile (HCFFT) connection is suggested. The HCFFT is consisted of pultruded FRP unit module, filament wound FRP which is in the outside of mandrel composed of circular shaped assembly of pultruded FRP unit modules, and concrete which is casted inside of the circular tube shaped hybrid FRP pile. Therefore, pultruded FRP can increase the flexural load carrying capacity, filament wound FRP and concrete filled inside can increase axial load carrying capacity. In the study, connection capacity of HCFFT(small and mid size) is investigated throughout experiments and finite element method. From the results of experiments, we suggested the connection methods about HCFFT pile connection.

The pile-cap connection part which transfers foundation loads through pile body is critical element regarding flexural and shear force because the change of area, stress, and stiffness occurs in the this region suddenly. The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of pile-cap connection dependent on fabrication methods using conventional PHC pile and composite PHC pile. A series of test under cyclic lateral load was performed and the connection behavior was discussed. From the test results, it was found that the initial rotational stiffness of pile-cap connection was affected by the length of pile-head inserted in footing and the location of longitudinal reinforcing bars. The types of pile and location of longitudinal reinforcing bars governed the behavior of pile-cap connection regarding load-carrying capacity, ductility, and energy dissipation.
Concrete filled steel tube (PCFT) piles, which compose PHC piles inside thin steel pipes, were developed to increase the flexural strength of the pile with respect to the horizontal load. In order to compare the flexural strength of PCFT pile with that of steel pipe pile, several flexural tests were performed on the PCFT and steel pipe piles with the same diameter and the P-M curves for both piles were constructed by the limit state design method. Four test piles were also installed and lateral pile load tests were performed to compare the lateral load capacities and lateral behaviors of the hybrid composite piles using PCFT piles and the existing piles such as HCP and steel pipe piles. The flexural test results showed that the flexural strength of PCFT piles was 18.7% higher than that of steel pipe piles with thickness of 12mm and the same diameter, and the mid-span deflection of piles was 50% lower than that of steel pipe piles at the same bending moment. From the P-M curves, it can be seen that the flexural strength of PCFT piles subjected to the vertical load is greater than that of steel pipe piles, but the flexural strength of PCFT piles subjected to the pullout load is lower than that of steel pipe piles. In addition, field pile load tests showed that the PCFT hybrid composite pile has 60.5% greater lateral load capacity than the HCP and 35.8% greater lateral load capacity than the steel pipe pile when the length of the upper pile in hybrid composite piles was the same.
