The experimental design methodology was applied in the drop tube furnace (DTF) to predict the various combustion properties according to the operating conditions and to assess the coal plant safety. Response surface method (RSM) was introduced as a design of experiment, and the database for RSM was set with the numerical simulation of DTF. The dependent variables such as burnout ratios (BOR) of coal and $CO/CO_2$ ratios were mathematically described as a function of three independent variables (coal particle size, carrier gas flow rate, wall temperature) being modeled by the use of the central composite design (CCD), and evaluated using a second-order polynomial multiple regression model. The prediction of BOR showed a high coefficient of determination (R2) value, thus ensuring a satisfactory adjustment of the second-order polynomial multiple regression model with the simulation data. However, $CO/CO_2$ ratio had a big difference between calculated values and predicted values using conventional RSM, which might be mainly due to the dependent variable increses or decrease very steeply, and hence the second order polynomial cannot follow the rates. To relax the increasing rate of dependent variable, $CO/CO_2$ ratio was taken as common logarithms and worked again with RSM. The application of logarithms in the transformation of dependent variables showed that the accuracy was highly enhanced and predicted the simulation data well.
In this study, cracking susceptibility of laser cladding was investigated according to the processing parameters such as laser power, scan speed and feeding rate with blended powders of stellite#6 and technolase40s (WC+NiCr). The solidification microstructure of clad was composed of Co-based dendrite structures with ${\gamma}+Cr7C3$ eutectic phases at the dendritic boundaries. The crack propagation showed transgranular fracture along dendritic boundaries due to brittle chrome carbide at the eutectic phases. From results of fractography experiments, the fracture surface was typical cleavage brittle fracture in the clad and substrate. The number of clad cracks, caused by a tensile stress after the solidification, increased with increase of laser power, scan speed and feeding rate. Increase of the laser power caused large pores by facilitating WC decarburizing reaction. And the pores affected increase of crack susceptibility. High scan speed caused increment of clad cracks due to thermal stress and WC particle fractures. Also, increase of the feeding rate accompanied an amount of WC particles causing crack initiation and decarburizing reaction.

Natural materials often have unique mechanical properties, such as the hierarchical structure of nacre formed through mineral bridges or asperities created between an inorganic particle and a natural-layer surface. As these asperities produce an exceptional shear resistance, in this study, we aimed to emulate the natural structure of nacre by synthesizing inorganic asperities and mineral bridges with different temperatures in the range of $1100-1300^{\circ}C$ and clay contents from 10 - 50 wt%. Following the infiltration of methyl methacrylate, we measured the mechanical properties to assess whether they were improved by the asperities. It was confirmed that the asperities improved the bending strength by 10%, and the anchoring effect was observed on the fracture surface.

In this study, yttrium-doped $SiO_2$ nanoparticles are synthesized using a reverse micelle technique combined with metal alkoxide hydrolysis and condensation. Spherical Y-doped $SiO_2$ nanoparticles with a uniform size distribution are prepared using selfassembly molecules in conjunction with the hydrolysis and condensation of organometallic precursors. The water/surfactant molar ratio influenced the Y-doped $SiO_2$ particles distribution of the core-shell composite particles and the distribution of Y doped $SiO_2$ particles was broadened as the water to surfactant ratio increased. The particle size of Y increase linearly as the $Y(NO_3)_3$ solution concentration increased. The average size of the cluster was found to depend on the micelle size, the nature of the solvent, and the concentration of the reagent. The effects of synthesis parameters, such as the molar ratio of water to surfactant and the molar ratio of water to TEOS, are discussed.
Two current approaches for modeling the vector magnetic hysteretic process are the vector Preisach models and those models based on a system of noninteracting pseudo-particles. The pseudo-particles are intended to mimic the average behavior of real media particles. The simplest switching mechanisms of pseudoparticles is the Stoner-Wholfarth model. The Preisach models are quite precise in specifying the experimental input to the models. The vector properties of the Preisach models are, however, inadequate. This is partly because of the questionable assumptions used in coupling the various vector hysteresis components. Also these models do not include reversible magnetization changes. Unlike Preisach counterpart, the Stoner-Wholfarth model is inherently vector in nature. This is because spatial distribution and switching mechanisms are imposed on the system of pseudo-particles, so they come closer to representing the physical reality. The lack of interaction between pseudo-particles exclude the usefulness of the Stoner-Wholfarth model for small fields when the medium is traversing minor loops. The present work is an attempt at combining the advantages of above two models into one composite model, including the effect of particle interaction.
In this study, AlN powder of fine particle size and of high purity was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of monodisperse, spherical Al(OH)3 which had been prepared by sol-gel method using Al(O-sec-C4H9)3 as the starting material. Depending on the mixing order and kinds of reducing agents, the optimum condition for the preparation of AlN was determined as follows. AlN single-phase was produced by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of (1) Benzene-washed Al(OH)3 and the reducing agent, carbon, which was mixed in a ball mill: for 5 hours at 140$0^{\circ}C$ under NH3 atmosphere; (2) The mixture prepared by hydrolysis of alkoxide solution into which carbon had been dispersed beforehand: for 5 hours at 135$0^{\circ}C$ ; (3) Al(OH)3 Poly(furfuryl alcohol) composite powder: for 2.5 hours at 135$0^{\circ}C$; (4) The mixture of Al(OH)3 and polyacrylonitrile: for 5 hours at 140$0^{\circ}C$. Addition of CaF2 increased the nitridation rate when carbon or polyacrylonitrile was used as the reducing agent; but it had no effect on the nitridation rate when furfuryl alcohol was used as the reducing agent.

Carbon rich fly ash was recently reported to have compositions that are ideal for use as a precursor and catalyst for carbon nanotube growth. This fly ash powder is mostly composed of pure carbon, predominantly present as sp2. In this work, the effect of sonication time on the morphology and structural properties of carbon rich fly ash particles is reported. The obtained results show that ultrasound treatment is an effective tool for producing ultrafine particles/fragments with higher porosity, which might be suitable for the adsorption of gasses. Moreover, carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) of this fly ash were produced in parallel using the ball milling technique, and were evaluated as reinforcements for epoxy based composites. These CNPs have almost spherical shapes with particle sizes of around 30 nm. They were found to have strong C=O carbonyl group bonds, which might be generated during the ball milling process. The tensile testing results of a fly ash CNP reinforced epoxy composite showed significant improvements in the mechanical properties, mainly in the stiffness of the polymer. The stiffness value was increased by around 23% of that of neat epoxy. These CNPs with chemically active groups might also be useful for other applications.

The effective elastic properties of materials containing spherical inclusions were calculated by the elastic wave scattering theory. In the formulation additional scattering fields by the presence of random multiple scatterers that affects the effective properties were found by the single scattering approximation. In calculating the scattering fields the ensemble average on the displacements and strains inside the scatterer was found from the static approximation at long wavelength limit. The displacements were assumed to be equal to the incident field, while the strains were calculated by Eshelby's equivalent inclusion principle on the single inclusion problem. Four different models were considered and they reflected different degrees of multiple scattering effects based on the approximation introduced in the process of embedding the inclusion in the matrix. The expressions for the effective elastic constants were given in each model, and their relations to the results obtained from other scattering theory and elasticity theory were discussed. The theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results on the epoxy matrix composites containing tungsten particles of different sizes and volume fractions
An optimum route to fabricate the $A1_2O_3/Fe-Ni$ alloy nanocomposites with sound microstructure and enhanced mechanical properties as well as magnetism was investigated. To prepare homogeneous nanocomposite powders of Fe-Ni alloy and $Al_2O_3$, the solution-chemistry routes using $Al_2O_3 \; Ni(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and $Fe(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ powders were applied. Microstructural observation of the powder mixture revealed that the Fe-Ni alloy particles of about 20 nm in size were homogeneously surrounded $A1_2O_3$, forming nanocomposite powder. The hot-pressed composite showed improved fracture toughness and magnetic response. These results suggest that the synergy materials with an improved mechanical properties and excellent functionality can be fabricated by controlled powder preparation and consolidation processing.
A new process for uniform coating of copper to submicron tungsten powder has been developed. W-Cu alloy where copper can be uniformly distibuted has been made by the liquid phase sintering of thus prepared tungsten powder. It has been found that copper content can be lowered less than IOwt. % in our new process, maintaining the uniform distribution of copper in W-Cu alloy. Relative density above 96% was obtained after the liquid phase sintering when small amount of cobalt was added. It was revealed that the rapid increase of densification rate was due to the enhancement of wettability between tungsten particle and liquid copper.
