  • To avoid the cracks of cast-in-place concrete in shear pockets and seams in the traditional composite beam with precast decks, this paper proposed a new type of prefabricated steel truss-concrete composite beam (ab. PSTC beam) with pre-embedded shear studs (ab. PSS connector). To study the initial cracking load of concrete deck, the development and distribution laws of the cracks, 3 PSTC beams were tested under hogging moment. And the crack behavior of the deck was compared with traditional precast composite beam, which was assembled by shear pockets and cast-in-place joints. Results show that: (i) the initial crack appears on the deck, thus avoid the appearance of the cracks in the traditional shear pockets; (ii) the crack of the seam appears later than that of the deck, which verifies the reliability of epoxy cement mortar seam, thus solves the complex structure and easily crack behavior of the traditional cast-in-place joints; (iii) the development and the distribution laws of the cracks in PSTC beam are different from the conventional composite beam. Therefore, in the deduction of crack calculation theory, all the above factors should be considered.

  • The properties of composite materials, when compared to those of metallic materials, are highly variable due to many factors including the batch-to-batch variability of raw materials, the prepreg manufacturing process, material handling, part-fabrication techniques, ply-stacking sequences, environmental conditions, and test procedures. It is therefore necessary to apply reliable statistical-analysis techniques to obtain the design allowables of composite materials. A new composite-material qualification process has been developed by the Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments (AGATE) consortium to yield the lamina-design allowables of composite materials according to standardized coupon-level tests and statistical techniques; moreover, the generated allowables database can be shared among multiple users without a repeating of the full qualification procedure by each user. In 2005, NASA established the National Center for Advanced Materials Performance (NCAMP) with the purpose of refining and enhancing the AGATE process to a self-sustaining level to serve the entire aerospace industry. In this paper, the statistical techniques and procedures for the generation of the allowables of aerospace composite materials will be discussed with a focus on the pooling-across-environments method.

  • This paper examines the fire performance of uninsulated and uncoated restrained steel-concrete composite beams supplemented with externally prestressed strands through advanced numerical simulation. In this work, a sequentially coupled thermo-mechanical analysis is carried out using ABAQUS. This analysis utilizes a highly nonlinear three-dimensional finite element (FE) model that is specifically developed and validated using full-sized specimens tested in a companion fire testing program. The developed FE model accounts for nonlinearities arising from geometric features and material properties, as well as complexities resulting from prestressing systems, fire conditions, and mechanical loadings. Four factors are of interest to this work including effect of restraints (axial vs. rotational), degree of stiffness of restraints, the configuration of external prestressed tendons, and magnitude of applied loading. The outcome of this analysis demonstrates how the prestressing force in the external tendons is primarily governed by the magnitude of applied loading and experienced temperature level. Interestingly, these results also show that the stiffness of axial restraints has a minor influence on the failure of restrained and prestressed steel-concrete composite beams. When the axial restraint ratio does not exceed 0.5, the critical deflection of the composite beam is lower than that of the composite beam with a restraint ratio of 1.0.

  • In this paper, a Taguchi-based finite element method (FEM) has been proposed and implemented to assess optimal design parameters for minimum static deflection in laminated composite plate. An orthodox mathematical model (based on higher-order shear deformation plate theory and Green-Lagrange geometrical nonlinearity) has been used to compute the nonlinear central deflection values of laminated composite plates according to Taguchi design of experiment via a self-developed MATLAB computer code. The lay-up scheme, aspect ratio, thickness ratio and the support conditions of the laminated composite plate structure were designated as the governable design parameters. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to investigate the effect of diverse control factors on the nonlinear static responses. Moreover, regression model is developed for predicting the desired responses. The ANOVA revealed that the lay-up scheme alongside the support condition plays vital role in minimizing the central deflection values of laminated composite plate under uniformly distributed load. The conformity test results of Taguchi analysis are also in good agreement with the numerical experimentation results.

  • In order to study the natural vibration characteristics of steel-concrete composite truss beam (SCCTB), the influence of multiple factors such as interface slip, shear deformation and moment of inertia are considered. Afterwards, based on the Hamilton principle the vibration control differential equation and natural boundary conditions of SCCTB are deduced. By solving SCCTB differential equations of vibration control, an analytical calculation method is proposed for analyzing the natural vibration characteristics of SCCTB. The natural frequencies of SCCTBs with different degrees of shear connection and effective lengths are calculated by using the analytical method, and the results are compared against those obtained from ANSYS finite element numerical calculation method. The results show that the analytical method considering the influence factors such as interface slip, shear deformation and moment of inertia are in good agreement with those obtained from ANSYS finite element numerical calculation method. This evidences the correctness of the analytical method and show that the method proposed exhibits improvement over the previously developed theories for the natural vibration characteristics of SCCTB. Finally, based on the analytical method, the influence factors of SCCTB natural vibration characteristics are analyzed. The results indicate that the influence of interface slip stiffness on SCCTB's natural frequency is more than 10% and therefore cannot be neglected. Moreover, shear deformation has an effect of more than 35% on SCCTB's natural frequency and the effect cannot be ignored either in this case too.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to compare the post-fracture survival rate of endodontically treated molar endodontically treated teeth (molar ETT) restored with resin composites or crowns and to identify potential risk factors, using a retrospective cohort design. Materials and Methods: Dental records of molar ETT with crowns or composite restorations (recall period, 2015-2019) were collected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The incidence of unrestorable fractures was identified, and molar ETT were classified according to survival. Information on potential risk factors was collected. Survival rates and potential risk factors were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier log-rank test and Cox regression model. Results: The overall survival rate of molar ETT was 87% (mean recall period, 31.73 ± 17.56 months). The survival rates of molar ETT restored with composites and crowns were 81.6% and 92.7%, reflecting a significant difference (p < 0.05). However, ETT restored with composites showed a 100% survival rate if only 1 surface was lost, which was comparable to the survival rate of ETT with crowns. The survival rates of ETT with composites and crowns were significantly different (97.6% vs. 83.7%) in the short-term (12-24 months), but not in the long-term (> 24 months) (87.8% vs. 79.5%). Conclusions: The survival rate from fracture was higher for molar ETT restored with crowns was higher than for ETT restored with composites, especially in the first 2 years after restoration. Molar ETT with limited tooth structure loss only on the occlusal surface could be successfully restored with composite restorations.

  • An evaluation of bending test of composite I and Box beams for determining the ultimate strength limit design criteria was presented. Maxium loads of composite I beams were found in beams composed of thicker upper flanges and/or vertical LVL flanges. These loads of plywood web beams were greater than those of PB web beams. Maximum loads of unsymmetrical box beams were less than those of symmetrical box beams. Thus, it took on different phase in box type beams. Ultimate loads of composite beams were greater than those of solid. The failure of composite beams were abrupt and failure mode was classified into following categories; Edgewise shear failure in web, delamination in flange-web joint, tension failure and tearing in LVL flanges, and web delamination. These failures of composite beams were appeared at the mixed mode. The influence factor affecting the performance of tested composite beams was shear strength of PB-web composite beams and compressive strength in plywood-web composite beams. It was also assumed that the influence factors on structural performance on composite beams were flange quality, web material and geometry of cross section. As one of the design methods resisting to compressive stress that was required in the case of small span to depth ratio and deep beams. composite I-beams composed of thicker upper flanges comparing to lower flanges were very effective in structural performance.

  • In the present study, the thermal buckling analysis of thick anisotropic laminated composite plates is carried out using the finite strip method based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. This theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and for zero transverse shear stresses on the plate surfaces. Therefore, this theory yields improved results over the Mindlin plate theory and eliminates the need for shear correction factors in calculating the transverse shear stiffness. The critical temperatures of simply supported rectangular cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminates are calculated. The effects of several parameters, such as the aspect ratio, the length-to-thickness ratio, the number of plies, fibre orientation and stacking sequence, are investigated.
