  • A direct boundary element method(DBEM) is developed for thin bodies whose surfaces are rigid or compliant. The Helmholtz integral equation and its normal derivative integral equation are adopted simultaneously to calculate the pressure on both sides of the thin body, instead of the jump values across it, to account for the different surface conditions of each side. Unlike the usual assumption, the normal velocity is assumed to be discontinuous across the thin body. In this approach, only the neutral surface of the thin body has to be discretized. The method is validated by comparison with analytic and/or numerical results for acoustic scattering and radiation from several surface conditions of the thin body; the surfaces are rigid when stationary or vibrating, and part of the interior surface is lined with a sound-absorbing material.

  • A hybrid type automotive drivers seat was invented with new concepts for the reduction of weight and manufacturing costs. Fundamental studies were performed to determine the basic geometry of reinforcing support. A prototypical design was provided by the manufacturer considering compatibility with other parts. Several structural analyses simulating various crash situations were performed and modifications were continued until a final design was reached. A sample product was manufactured and sled crash tests were performed to verify the safety of the seat. Comparisons of test results with the previous model and a seat from another company proved safety performances to be superior.

  • The nonlinear structural analyses of high-aspect-ratio structures were performed. For the high-aspect-ratio structures, it is important to understand geometric nonlinearity due to large deflections. To consider geometric nonlinearity, finite element analyses based on the large deflection beam theory were introduced. Comparing experimental data and the present nonlinear analysis results, the current results were proved to be very accurate for the static and dynamic behaviors for both isotropic and anisotropic beams.

  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) was attempted on a ceramic matrix composite containing non-conductive alumina as a matrix and conductive titania as a second phase, and was found successful. As the current or duty factor increased, the material removal rate (MRR) increased and the surface roughness also increased. The EDMed surface was covered with a number of craters of a circular shape having 100-200 microns of diameter. The melting and evaporation was suggested for the EDM mechanism. The bending strength decreased 44% after EDM, but the Weibull modulus increased more than twice. Combination of EDM and barre이 polishing resulted in the maintenance of the bending strength level. Temperature distribution near a spark in the sample was computer-simulated by use of finite element method, and was found to have similar shape to the one which the observed craters have.

  • This paper presents an effective, reliable and accurate method for prediction of structural behaviour of steel frames at elevated temperature. The refined plastic hinge method, which has been used successfully in the second-order elasto-plastic analysis of steel frames at ambient conditions, is adopted here to allow for time-independent fire effects. In contrast to the existing rigorous finite element programs, the present method uses the advanced analysis technique that provides a simple and reliable means for practical study of the behaviour of steel frames at elevated temperature by a limiting stress model. The present method is validated against other test and numerical results.

  • In this paper, the effect of material-temperature dependent on the wave propagation of a cantilever beam composed of functionally graded material (FGM) under the effect of an impact force is investigated. The beam is excited by a transverse triangular force impulse modulated by a harmonic motion. Material properties of the beam are temperature-dependent and change in the thickness direction. The Kelvin-Voigt model for the material of the beam is used. The considered problem is investigated within the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory by using energy based finite element method. The system of equations of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equations. The obtained system of linear differential equations is reduced to a linear algebraic equation system and solved in the time domain and frequency domain by using Newmark average acceleration method. In order to establish the accuracy of the present formulation and results, the comparison study is performed with the published results available in the literature. Good agreement is observed. In the study, the effects of material distributions and temperature rising on the wave propagation of the FGM beam are investigated in detail.

  • With the improvement of the quality of construction materials and the development of construction technologies, large-scale long-span steel frame buildings have been built recently. The P.E.B system using tapered members is being employed as an economically-efficient long-span structure owing to its advantage of being able to distribute stress appropriately depending on the size of sectional areas of members. However, in December 2005 and in February 2014, P.E.B buildings collapsed due to sudden loads such as snow loads and wind gusts. In this study, the design and construction of the P.E.B system in Korea were analyzed and its structural safety was evaluated using the finite element analysis program to suggest how to improve the P.E.B system in order to promote the efficient and rational application of the system.

  • This paper is concerned with a fracture strength study of composite adhesive lap joints. The tests were carried out on specimen joints manufactured hybrid stacked joints such as the polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer. The main objective of the work was to test the fracture strength using hybrid fiber composites with a polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer adjacent to the spew fillet of adhesive bonded joints and hybrid stacked joints. The results are presented using tensile-shear strength graph and finite element analysis. The failure mechanisms are discussed in order to explain that spew fillet at the end of the overlap reduces greatly the adhesive shear and effects the tensile-shear strength in hybrid stacked joints.

It uill explain salt rejection, membrane flux, and recovery rates and the affect that salt built up has on membrane performance. It wil 1 explain the limitations of RO performance and why pretreatment is important. It will describe the two basic types of membrane, asymmetric and thin-film composite and explain the difference between these types plus compare cellulose acetate types to aromatic polyamide type membranes. It will discuss operating efficiences as it compares to feedwater pressure, concentration, temperature and pH. Finally, it will discuss the differences between tubular, plate and frame, hollow fiber and spiral wound element design. It will be a paper that talks about the basics of RO systems and should give a person who is unfamiliar with RO a basic introduction to this type of separation technology.

  • In this paper static analysis of FGM cylinders subjected to internal and external pressure was carried out by a mesh-free method. In this analysis MLS shape functions are used for approximation of displacement field in the weak form of equilibrium equation and essential boundary conditions are imposed by transformation method. Mechanical properties of cylinders were assumed to be variable in the radial direction. Two types of cylinders were analyzed in this work. At first cylinders with infinite length were considered and results obtained for these cylinders were compared with analytical solutions and a very good agreement was seen between them. Then the proposed mesh-free method was used for analysis of cylinders with finite length and two different types of boundary conditions. Results obtained from these analyses were compared with results of finite element analyses and a very good agreement was seen between them.
